Gwyneth Paltrow joins Nicole Kidman in "The Danish Girl"Variety is reporting that Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on to star opposite Nicole Kidman in The Danish Girl.
The film is about the first ever post-operative transgender person, Einar Wegener, and her wife, Greta, who stood by her side as she made the transition. Kidman will play Einar, and Paltrow is now set to play Gerda.
As we told you before, Charlize Theron had originally been in talks for the role of Gerda, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. I'm a fan of Gwyneth's work, for the most part — including Shakespeare in Love where she dressed convincingly in drag, and her most recent film, Two Lovers — so I think she'll be great in the role. The Danish Girl is being directed by Thomas Alfredson, who was behind the amazingly dark and beautiful vampire film, Let the Right One In, and the script is from Lucinda Coxon, adapted from the 2000 novel by David Ebershoff. Variety describes the premise as "a man's transformation after his wife, a portrait painter, asks him to stand in for an absent female model. Einar begins a metamorphosis into Lili after he slips on a dress, stockings and woman's shoes."
I have no doubts Nicole Kidman will do great playing the MTF Einar/Lili. She convincingly played Virginia Woolf in The Hours, prosthetic nose and all, and so, to me, she's always been a little queer. And with stars like these two cast in the roles, the film is sure to be seen by many. Let's hope the topic is handled as it was in the book, which won a LAMBDA Award. I feel bad
Gwyneth Paltrow
Naomi Watts
yay!
I can't wait to see this as I am a portrait artist :) Needless to say these two will be great, albeit hard to get used to at first...
It's so hard to find lesbian subjects to paint in my area!
Knowledge is Power. Believe in yourself.
i wish Charlize was able to
i wish Charlize was able to this. Well Gwyneth is not a bad choice.

I'm happy with this
I wanted Charlize or Uma,
I wanted Charlize or Uma, but here's hoping Gwyneth surprises me.
I adored Let the Right One In - helluva lot better than Twilight - so I think the odds are good. I'm looking forward to this one. May the Ice Queen transform...
thats soo cool :) cannot
that jacket-
i do not like
I second that!
She's boring and bland. Never have been a fan.
Gwyneth Paltrow? :-(
This would have been MUCH better if Charlize Theron was still on board. But hey ho, still sounds good.
good news
They're both BLAH
Gwyneth Paltrow's best work was as Margot Tenenbaum, where she played a bland character, which is exactly what she appears to be.
As for Nicole, I used to think she could transform herself into any character, but I was wrong. I could not buy her as the poor not at all glamorous maid in The Human Stain.
But I'll certainly watch this movie, no matter who's in it.

I can't wait for this film,
Yeah.
Not gonna' lie, I'm just excited for Nicole Kidman. This looks like it will be a really good movie.
אני קורא, אז אני פשוט צריך לשמוע אותך
Meh.
I'm totally okay with GP
Some people were really wanting Naomi Watts to play opposite her BFF Kidman. Although Naomi is one of my absolute faves, I think I would have been weirded out having them play husband wife/wife/wife knowing how close they are IRL. But, Gwen's definitely got the acting chops and the Scandinavian look. I think she'll do just fine.
*I need buddies!*
Can't Wait!
Thomas Alfredson's "Let the Right One In" is a wonderful film, perfect cast, great cinematography, super script. Highly recommend everyone see it - the original book is great, too. I hope this one is as good, and it's going to be interesting to see Kidman play a man. If she can pull it off properly (no pun intended! ) it has "Oscar" written all over it.
Curious about how the studio will market this one - Danish director plus Danish story - about the first MTF? Might be a tough sell to mass marketed to death Americans.
Dam the lack of Charlize
Has anyone read the book
Has anyone read the book that the movie is based on?
When I originally heard about this movie, and the concept of the wife standing by her husband's transformation, I believed that meant they stayed a couple.
Although I have not read the book, which may differ from the movie version, I have since heard people say that while the wife is supportive, that theirs does not become a "lesbian" relationship and both move on with men, at least sexually. They might still be emotionally involved.
I still find the idea of the film intriguing and the casting good. And to be honest, as a lesbian, if my partner decided she wanted to become a man I don't know how I wold respond to that, if I could transition to that. My point is I'm not dumping on the film if they don't get together post-transition, but at the same time I was disappointed when I read that this may be the case. But I understand the difficulty involved.
Let's give Gwyneth a chance
