Nicole Kidman moves ahead with the transexual love story "The Danish Girl"

Remember when Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron were going to play a couple in a movie about the world’s first post-op male-to-female transsexual? Well, it’s still half true. While Charlize has dropped out, Nicole is pushing ahead as star and producer of The Danish Girl.

The project has added director Tomas Alfredson, the man behind last year’s acclaimed Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In. The Danish Girl is based on a book by the same name about Danish painter Einar Wegener (played by Nicole), who in 1931 became the first person to go through a successful sex-change operation to become a woman, Lili Elbe.

Charlize was originally slated to play Einar/Lili’s wife Gerda Wegener, but has since left the production. They married when Einar was 22 and Gerda 17. Gerda was an accomplished Danish artist who frequently used Lili as the subject in her work. Her paintings and illustrations of beautiful women often featured lesbian overtones and erotic imagery. (Some NSFW examples here.)

With Charlize is no longer attached to the role, I’d love to see another equally talented actress take over. Off the top of my head Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Uma Thurman and Radha Mitchell could all pull of Danish and married to a the world’s first MTF transsexual with ease. I mean, Kate and Nicole already make a great-looking couple.

Director Alfredson told Daily Variety, “We have been in talks for close to a year, and we are soon going into production.” IMDB.com has the film slated for a 2010 release.

So, who would you like to see cast alongside Nicole as Gerda? And how exciting is it to have such a progressive love story make it to the big screen with such a big name behind it?

Yes!!

I'm eccstatic about this! I think this is just what the world needs! I remember after Transamerica came out, more and more people became open to the idea of transsexuals in general. It was great! And I honestly don't care who ends up playing Gerta as long as it's someone with a slight amount of class and NOT Megan Fox, yes?

Captain Jax Havok's picture

indeed

i remember when transamerica came out, it opened up a lot of people's minds about transexuals so i hope this movie does the same. :]
on_earth09's picture

ew

megan fox would ruin it haha. I don't think nicole kidman would ever do that..!

Let's get one thing straight, I'm not.

Brennan's picture

Oh, definitely!!

I just saw Jennifer's Body and I'm sorry to say, but Megan Fox was HORRIBLE! I truly don't see the appeal, I'm sorry. She may have a good "body," but she has absolutely NO brains in that head of hers. That is a total turn off! Now if you want to bring up Amanda Seyfried...we can talk! :)

Kate Winslet would be great!

Kate Winslet would be great for the role! This is just what my 2010 needs.

OK, all better.

OK, fixed it. My apologies.

p.s. Just FYI, the second set of photos are of Einar/Lili and the one following that is of Gerda. The captions didn't come through.

you fixed it too well Snarky, or did you??

Hey Ms Snarker,

You missed the In off the end of the title of 'Let the right one in"

Holy cow, I made a royal mess of the whole thing, didn't I? Sheesh, fixed it redux. Thanks for the catch!

I hope for the best

I really hope they'll make this, but I believe it when I see it. There has been so many great movie ideas scrapped over the years, especially those with queer content.

Oh, and by the way, Let the Right One In is a Swedish film, not Norwegian. :)

The possibilities....

I love Kate Winslet...so very versatile and makes the craft appear effortless. I wonder about those who haven't really proven that part of themselves yet....Laurel Holloman came to mind when it started thinking outside the box. I wonder..could she be as good as a kate Winslet in something this high profile?
heartofartemis's picture

LAUREL HOLLOMAN

would be even better than Kate Winslet in my mind.  She is one of the most underrated, versatile actresses in the BIZ.  Remember her as Randy Dean in  The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love?  Remember her as Justine on ANGEL or Tina in the L Word?  She has such great range  and depth as a character actress  and just disappears into her roles like a chameleon.

I would def watch it

well i dont really know who would be good for the role, but i would def watch it.

oh and i can see i wasnt the only one who noticed Let the Right one in (la den rette komme inn) was a swedish movie/book and not a norwegian. The book is amazing by the way, havent seen the movie yet. read it in norwegian which was a challenge since im dane and dont speak norwegian.

Ned: So, who's the lucky chap? What's his name?
Rachel: Her name... is Luce.

While I thought the book was merely 'meh,' this is still very exciting news for the trans community!

If this film is done right, it could be a major step in positive trans visibility. While I'm sad Charlize had to bow out, I think Uma Thurman would be a great casting choice- esp. since her family is Northern European (Sweden).

OR what if Nicole played Gerda and Cate Blanchett played Einar/Lili? That woman can play anything and anyone. But then again, maybe I'm biased (see avatar pic). ;0)

I kind of really love Nicole

I kind of really love Nicole Kidman right now.

Not gonna happen, but I'd just die of happiness if Naomi Watts was cast as Gerda.

Um

well this kinda makes me wanna bounce all over the place. YES STOKED FOR THIS! I kinda want to see someone who isnt extremely well known cast opposite Nicole because it would be a fabulous A list debut. Someone like, I dont know...Lena Headey. I mean alot of people know her but she isnt really KNOWN. You know? All that you listed would be friggin' perfect, but no matter who is cast for the role I still TOTALLY going to see this because Nicole can do no wrong in my eye.

Gah!

I LOVE Let the Right One In.  It's such a sweet (and strangely gay-ish) movie!

Oh, I'm with shortypants on the subject of Cate Blanchett.  I freakin' love her.

Other ideas:  Ayelet Zurer, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Connelly, or Angelina Jolie (although, I feel like casting her would go  either VERY right, or VERY wrong...).

lezzieboredom's picture

What about a *gasp* trans actress?

I know several AMAZING trans actresses who would be the BEST casting for this role. It's very frustrating that no one even considers them...

Trans Actresses>>

Lezzieboredom, you are absolurely right.

The only Real McCoy I know of is Candace Cane. Drop some names, girlfriend! Who else is out there?

I wholeheartedly

I wholeheartedly agree.

The only benefit I can see to using Kidman in the role is that it'll bring a LOT of people to the theater to see a trans/lesbian love story. Hopefully films like this will get people used to the idea tht a: transpeople exist, b: they are not scary, c: they are human. Which in the future will hopefully lead to d: some of them are actors and would very much love to be in the movies. Then we can enjoy trans actors in our films. I hope those days come soon.

Kate Winslet is a great

Kate Winslet is a great choice. But there are so many great actresses who could be a perfect Gerda.

Can't wait to see the result....

Whatt??!?

No Charlize??? why?? oh man! kate Winslet ain't that bad but charlize would make my fantasy come true! lol

Nothing Lesbian About It (spoilers)

I read the book this will be based on, and unless there are some massive changes there is nothing lesbian about this story. Lili gets involved with a man while/after transitioning and Gerda finds love with another man. Gerda is supportive through the transition but they stop being a real couple - if anything, they develop more of a mother/daughter relationship.

The character of Lili, unfortunately, was just too helpless and selfish to be likeable. I think the title is very appropriate because Einar never becomes a woman, but becomes a little girl, who needs to be saved and looked after. The whole transition is basically Gerda's idea and Lili just reacts. I know this was set in the early 20th century but it's such a step backwards from Transamerica or Boys Don't Cry - stories about adults who want to take life into their own hands. Interestingly written, but quite a disappointment. Not to say I won't see the movie, but wouldn't expect much lesbian content nor a really positive trans character.

Hoom. Thank you. This is

Hoom. Thank you. This is interesting and rather sad. I'd like to think that something positive can be pulled from this anyhow, but that's not exactly allaying my apprehensions (Hollywood + easy-to-mess-up subject matter) about the potential for positivity&loveliness.

But damn, those pictures by

But damn, those pictures by the real-life Gerda suggest something much better...

ftw.

Cate Blanchett is my

Cate Blanchett is my favourite actress; I'd be stoked if she was cast. That said, I think Uma Thurman is a bit better at acting sensually, which would possibly lead to stronger chemistry with the Ice Queen.

I cannot believe I never

I cannot believe I never knew of this story.

- nor that an american page would be educating me about my own nations history :)

pretty cool thought. i would love to watch the movie

however, i think Iben Hjejle should play Gerda Wegener - just to include a bit of danish DNA in the movie :)

read the book when it first

read the book when it first came out that this movie was going to be made. In my mind as I was reading the book, I pictured Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron, haha. I liked the story very much and am looking forward to this movie being made. Nicole and Kate Winslet would absolutely make it a power movie.

Danish Girl

Well... I had my heart set on Charlize & Nicole. They're the pictures I had in my head as I was reading Ebershoff's novelized version of the real life story, but Nic & Kate would be awesome as well. Incidentally, while the story itself is a fascinating one, Ebershoff's prose was rather dry. I felt distanced from the characters as I read the book because of it.
