Ultimate lesbian heroine poll forgets lesbians, heroinesLesbians like the dark side. I’m not sure what that means, either, but according to One Poll, it’s one of the reasons that Angelina Jolie is the No. 1 Ultimate Lesbian Heroine.
“Angelina was the clear winner, and she also has a dark side which many lesbians like too.” Good to know. The poll “spanned 2600 lesbians,” which sounds more like a motorcycle trick than a survey. Come to think of it, though, that might explain the results. No argument with Angelina, of course — she always comes out on top. But the rest of the list is, frankly, weird. In fact, before you read on, make a quick note of your own celebrity heroes. They don’t have to be lesbians, since that obviously was not a criterion for One Poll. To inspire you, here’s one of mine:
Rachel Maddow didn’t make the One Poll list. And I think I’m safe in saying that most of your heroes aren’t here, either. Before you jump to anyone’s defense, I am not dissing any of these women. They’re great. Well, most of them, anyway. I just can’t image 2600 lesbians anywhere that world come up with this list of top 20 heroes. Here’s the list: 1) Jolie; 2) Madonna; 3) Pink; 4) Martina Navratilova; 5) Ellen DeGeneres; 6) Kylie Minogue; 7) Lady Gaga; 8) Annie Lennox; 9) Beyoncé; 10) Germaine Greer; 11) Liza Minnelli; 12) Gwen Stefani; 13) Cher; 14) Janet Jackson; 15) Tori Amos; 16) Britney Spears; 17) Cyndi Lauper; 18) Scarlett Johansson; 19) Sarah Jessica Parker; and 20) Dolly Parton I’m going to leave the dissection of the list to you. But here’s some food for thought. Ellen, who obviously deserves a place on the list, is No. 5. But where’s Portia?
Pink (No. 3) and Lady Gaga (No. 7) made the top ten, but Beth Ditto is missing?
Kylie Minogue (No. 6), Liza Minnelli (No. 11) and Cher (No. 13)? I think some gay men snuck into the 2600. Madonna (No. 2) represents the diva category nicely, thank you.
Britney Spears? Janet Jackson? Beyoncé? Seriously? Maybe I’m becoming a curmudgeon in my old age. But am I asking too much for a list of lesbian heroes to be either real lesbians or real heroes? You tell me. Who are your ultimate lesbian heroines? Submitted by on July 22, 2009 - 2:00pm. |

HAHA
That is pathetic. Sounds like something mainstream society would do to the lesbians.
They have two heterosexual women portraying lesbians for pay but there are millions of lesbians in this world and a good percentage of those are actually in the entertainment industry...why not find them and choose them? Shame!
This is just as bad as when Katy Perry was placed on a cover of a gay magazine instead of an actual lesbian!
I can't think of any lesbian heroines I will come back later to post some. :D
i agree
i totally agree with you on that u know it's like who the hell came up with this list wtf!!!
oh Katy Perry sings 1 song about being a freakin barsexaul(which i think is a bunch of bull) and now she's on the cover of a gay magazine is'nt that some shit!
wonders how does one tell her parents that their one and only daughter likes other people's daughters...
I agree
... they wanted this to be mainstream and hetero, but they didn't exert much effort.
I mean, what about Tyra, who has opened doors for many a tall, beautiful lesbian like Kim Stolz? Or Marie Osmond and Cybil Shepherd who have both stood up for the gay community as supportive parents? Or Jennifer Beales?
and seriously- my two biggest heroes right now are Rachel Maddow and Beth Ditto.
Well it depends on whether
Well it depends on whether by "lesbian heroine" they mean a heroine to the lesbians or a heroine that's a lesbian or, like it seems to be the case here, just about anything else. Personally, a lot of people would appear before I would even THINK of Janet Jackson or let's say... Dolly Parton? Really?

Dolly Parton is actually
I do not love the dark side.
I second
that. I'm not a fan of the dark side, myself.

LOL! I was actually just saying to my brother the other day that I'm totally a Hufflepuff, even though I've not done one of those facebook quizzes to properly 'check'
edit: terrible news!! I just did an online sorting hat, and it said I'm a Ravenclaw :S but I'm such a Hufflepuff (with a little Gryffindor and Ravenclaw I guess).. how odd. It did have dumb questions, I don'd think I trust it..

Try taking a bunch of tests and then picking the result you get the most. There really are a lot of stupid sorting quizzes out there -_- Somehow people think your favorite color has something to do with which house you belong to. I've occassionally tested as a Hufflepuff, though I really am a Ravenclaw.
And it amuses me how seriously I take this discussion, lol
Who The Hell Did They Poll?
Either the people doing the polling didn't ask the right question the right way, or the alleged lesbians that were polled didn't understand the question. The inclusion of Britney Spears alone speaks to the inaccuracy of the polling.
No Tina Fey? Seriously?
Besides that, why does any lesbian still care about Angelina Jolie? Her acting career peaked out of the gate. She went from "Gia" to ubiquitous sexpot. It's time to move on, ladies.
Did they seriously poll lesbians?
Because you know how some magazines are:
Journalist A: "Couldn't find enough lesbians, what now?"
Journalist B: "Oh, find some bisexuals."
Journalist A: "Can't find many of those either."
Journalist B: "Go to a college campus, even if they think they might be bi, interview them."
Problem solved. Nothing against the bi ladies, but I'm more thinking the girls who are what I call BFBF (Bi For BoyFriend) or simply have had a fantasy or two and think that makes them bi. I also think you're right about the gay boys sneaking in. What lesbian really thinks Liza Manelli is a lesbian hero? Or either? Also, I have to wonder at the format. Did the interviewers just put a whole bunch of names on a sheet of paper and ask people to circle their top 10? I'd almost be willing to bet that's what happened. I mean, how many women of any age among lesbians would bring Dolly to mind right off the top? Surelly we can think up 10 recent people...
Unless the directions got addled. You know, some people may have thought, "Who looks like a lesbian, who might be a lesbian, etc." It's the only thing I can think of. Age probably played a part as well.
Or it could just be a giant prank played by drunk frat boys....

huh!!??!!
Ok I agree with the Pink, Jolie, Ellen....obviously, but the rest. huh?
Cher? Britney? Dolly? Liza?...Gremaine Greer!!??!!! WTF!! Really!!?? Seriously!?!!
I'm totally confused - were these 2600 actually lesbians or were they told a different question?!
I was actually saying these names in shock out loud and then progressively getting louder as the list went on...wrong, oh so very very wrong. I'm now left flabbergasted!

"Happiness is only real when shared"
I'm sure you didn't mean to dis...
hell no
I could never diss the legend that is martina!! that woman is amazing!! Idol.

I find it hard to beleive that Germaine surprised you.. why is that?
To every feminist action, there is an equal and opposite beauty reaction- Naomi Wolf
ah well
just me then! just think that spot could've gone to another person..ah well, each to their own! :)

"Happiness is only real when shared"
Off the top of my head....
Melissa Etheridge
kd lang
Indigo Girls
I mean really, who do these "lesbians" listen to anyway? You will never catch me saying one bad thing about Dolly Parton...LOVE HER!! But, like you, Beyonce & Britney?! I can go for Cyndi and some others being on the list because of their fierce advocacy for our rights, but I have my doubts about the validity of these results.
What?!
Ok really now... just.. wow.
There is no way. I mean for Lady Gaga to be on here says a lot... i mean, of course lesbians are going to nominate an artist that sings about riding disco sticks....
yes way!
i love the gaga!
...and i love kylie minogue. but then again i also just had someone post on my facebook telling me they think i'm secretly a gay male, so there you go.
maybe this poll just interviewed me 2600 times.
...
yeah...
does it matter?
personally i love beyonce... but she didnt come to my mind when considering the top 20. but why does it matter this much who these lesbians picked... so what if loads of them liked britney spears and germaine greer... do we all have to like the same people or regard them our heroines to be credible as lesbians? i mean if theyre choosing janet jackson and gwen stefani as their heroines, doesnt it just bring their judgment of people into question rather than their sexuality? surely lesbians are allowed to be just as ridiculous as anyone else when selecting their "heroines"... but it's not fair to then say, well cos this is who they selected then it's not really representative of a lesbian population... why limit ourselves to only a select few we would choose from? i mean it would be nice to see our own heroines represented in a poll that is supposedly a lesbian poll... but isnt it better to not restrict ourselves? i dno...but id have personally loved to see portia de rossi and leisha hailey up on there - but we should have our own AE poll and put them on there
~to cure rarely, to relieve often, but to console, always...~
I, for one, never
I, for one, never understood the enthusiasm around Uh Huh Her (even though I think Leisha Hailey is absolutely brilliant) or Tegan and Sara but what bothers me here is the fact that they only interviewed 2600 girls and said "okay, this is what lesbians like". If they're going to try and analyze the "lgbt community" I'd like them to at least make it a little bit more accurate.

Tina Fey?
What about Tina Fey? She aboviously isn't a lesbian but who doesn't love her? She didn't have a problem playing a character (or writing about her) who is thought to be bisexual if not lesbian. Why isn't she on there?
Kylie Minogue. That made me laugh out loud. I like Kylie Minogue well enough and all but a lesbian heroine, i think not.
I can't believe Rachel Maddow didn't make the list. I think that speaks volumes for the validity of these results...
I don't get...
Agree, why would Bette
Agree, why would Bette Ditto be a hero? but...
Rachel Maddow HAS TO go on it. So does Portia De Rossi. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, Prime Minister of Iceland. Melissa Etheridge? Tina Fey? Jodie Foster?
Britney Spears is a
Britney Spears is a goddess... and the best looking thing to walk the planet. My only argument would be she's down too low.
I'm over Jolie, though I'm not surprised. I'm kinda over Pink too. I'm lost on the Dolly Parton, Cher and Beyonce. It does seem like a mixture of a gay men's and women's list.
oh my lord who voted for
Seriously?
Britney Spears....
How about a lesbian who has actually done something heroic in her life. Caroline Paul. (Just the first well known example that popped into my head.)
I have no doubt that there are tons of other women out there who are lesbians who have done heroic things, not just saving people physically, but doctors and nurses, and social workers, etc, etc. I could rant on, but I won't.
And really, really, Liza Minnelli? Though, I can sorta see why Cher, if ya squint.
Tegan and Sara, Melissa
Tegan and Sara, Melissa Etheridg, KD Lang, Indigo Girls? Come on.
Very occasionally, if you pay attention, life doesn't suck.

Lies.
1) Jolie; 2) Madonna; 3) Pink; 4) Martina Navratilova; 5) Ellen DeGeneres; 6) Kylie Minogue; 7) Lady Gaga; 8) Annie Lennox; 9) Beyoncé; 10) Germaine Greer; 11) Liza Minnelli; 12) Gwen Stefani; 13) Cher; 14) Janet Jackson; 15) Tori Amos; 16) Britney Spears; 17) Cyndi Lauper; 18) Scarlett Johansson; 19) Sarah Jessica Parker; and 20) Dolly Parton
Wait.... Madonna over Ellen? Ga-Ga over Lennox? Cher, Liza, Britney, Beyonce Dolly Parton, and Janet Jackson? I love all of the aforementioned but I would never classify Cher, Liza, Beyonce, Britney, Janet, and Dolly as heroines in the lesbian community. What about Melissa Ethridge, or Tegan and Sara, or Tina Fey? or Leisha Hailey? Hell I'd even take Piper Perabo as a better answer than Beyonce.
I think some gay men snuck into the 2600??? I think 2400 gay men snuck into the 2600....
I'll bet 20 bucks that this was written by gay male staffers, because no lesbian in her right mind would say Madonna is more of a lesbian heroine than Ellen. period. Forget the rest of the list of fag hags, I love madonna, I love Cher, Ga-Ga is a hoot, but very few lesbians would claim them as Heroines....
None of those people are heros
Maybe, MAYBE, Ellen and Martina because it took courage to come out when they did.
But I don't think entertainment personalities are heros at all. If you asked me who my heros (and I don't se why that needs to be gender differentiated...) were, they would probably be mostly non-lesbians but they'd basically be non-actors too.
They'd be people like Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman, George Washington, Christine Jorgensen, heck, from another post today, Meghan McCain. It takes courage to question authority or your own country or party or to be true to yourself when others criticize you.
What exactly has Cher done lately that took courage?
I also wouldn't put Beth Ditto, Tina Fey, Portia de Rossi, or Pink on that list. What exactly have they done that's so courageous?
They came out? When they
They came out? When they did a job where you need wide public approval and therefore jeopardized their carriers? And also made people realize the women they liked to listen to or watch on tv were "that kind of persons"?
I don't know, seems pretty courageous and selfless to me.

not all of them did
Tina Fey and Pink did not, as to my knowledge, they are not gay (no matter what my gaydar might say about Pink or how awesome a lesbian Tina Fey would be haha).
Beth Ditto and Portia, yes, but sorry, I'm not going to give them the same props I do Martina and even Ellen, because it is just not the same to come out now as it was in the 70s or even the 90s. Beth Ditto definitely not - I haven't listened to her music because it's not my style, but it seems to me that the indie rock scene is not terribly homophobic these days.
Anyway, I don't think that Beth Ditto's coming out can really be compared to Harriet Tubman, or someone like that who risked their LIFE. Maybe not everyone needs to risk their life to be courageous, but it certainly helps.
Ditto may not be Harriet
Ditto may not be Harriet Tubman but she IS an incredible role model for women who feel shy because they're heavier and she stands up to a lot of fat-phobic shit. Plus she called Katy Perry out on being an opportunist prat.
I love Kylie to death...
but I wouldn't consider her my lesbian heroine simply cos she's not a lesbian! She's my dance floor heroine though!

Oooh, I can see what's happened here...they set the cool, 'hip' intern on the job, who googled 'gay' and 'icons', and came up with this list. Voilà!

Brain Buster!!!
I wish I can remember the website but your funny post does really exist as a fun web game about gender fludity.
LOL
I'm going to go with the one on the....right?
Well, I do consider
Well, I do consider Angelina Jolie a heroine of mine. And I consider Rachel Maddow a heroine of mine, as well. I fail to see why, as a lesbian, my heroines should differ from a straight person's...
It Might Eventually
Because gays are different from straight people. There are a lot of women that came before you and fought for rights you have now. People straight people might not know about, but the inquisitive gay person would because they looked into the history of their own community.

Tweet: @GrrrlRomeo
really are we that different?
gays shouldnt be *so* different from straights. the only thing that differentiates us is that we are attracted to our own sex/gender, that should be the only difference. any other traits should be based on an individual rather than their sexuality... i agree there are a lot of people who fought for the rights we now have... however in order to know about that or learn about it you don't need to be gay... you just need to be inquisitive.. you can just as easily be straight and inquisitive. to impose certain qualities and characteristics on someone just because theyre gay is unfair, and takes away from uniqueness... i think...

Heroines?
What is Britney Spears doing on that list? Wowzers.
And are we talking heroines as in the main woman in a movie or who we rather ride in on a white horse and save us from all of our troubles?
I'm glad ¨P!nk is on
I just googled famous lesbians and female heroes...
I just googled famous lesbians and female heroes and found a couple of ladies:
1. Jane Addams was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and perhaps the most famous social worker from the United States. She was also the lover of women and lived in a Boston Marriage with another woman.
2. Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer is the highest ranking military official to come out while in the service. Prior to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" she challenged the military policy banning gays and won the right to serve. In 1994 she published her autobiography Serving in Silence, which was made into a TV movie starring Glenn Close.
3. Rosie Jones has won 13 Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) titles. She has been on the tour since 1982. She had four top-three finishes in 2002.
4. In 1955, Del Martin formed Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first national organization for lesbians in the United States.
5. Crystal Eastman. Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, and others in founding the militant Congressional Union, which became the National Woman's Party. NOT CONFIRMED LESBIANS BUT HEROES FOR LEADING THE SUFFRAGETTES.
And that only took me 10 minutes to find those 5.
Thank You Thank You Thanks You
For googling and coming up with some lesbian heroes cause it's tragically annoying to read that Pink is a Hero! Why would she be a hero? Do the readers even know what a hero is?
The work of Angelina Jolie is admirable but she only gets my admiration. I mean I believe that celebrities have a responsibility to meet a higher calling. Sorry but I believe that.
I believe that they should 1st use their wealth to become educated enough to have empathy (Nod to Sotomayor) and then use their resources to affect positive change in the world or in the life of a child.
Technology Will Lead To The Demise Of Civilization As We Know It.
Yeah... At least Pink is on!
A Perfect Body
Oh yeah that definitely the prime characteristic of a lesbian hero. Like I alreay asked: Do the readers know what defines a hero? Good Grief.
