The stars shine at a soggy Golden Globes
Blame it on the rain, or the lack of Mariah-levels of over-imbibing, but the Golden Globes were a relatively subdued — dare I say classy — affair Sunday night. The soggy weather coupled with serious world events made for far fewer wacky Globes moments (à la Christine Lahti and the world’s worst timed bathroom). Still the stars managed to shine and some were downright Glee-ful.

Several celebrities wore ribbons in support of Haiti. Others — including Olivia Wilde, Meryl Streep and Amy Poehler — are auctioning off their Golden Globes dresses to raise money for earthquake relief efforts. Sadly, Olivia does not come with her dress.

The evening’s first big winner set the emotional tone for the night. Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture winner Mo’Nique have a heartfelt speech that touched her film Precious’ themes of abuse and redemption. “I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched,” she said. “It’s now time to tell. And it’s okay.”

Toni Collette took home the Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. Though it remains to be seen which of her United States of Tara personalities will get to keep it.

Julianna Margulies gave ER fans a long-awaited Nurse Hathaway/Dr. Ross reunion as she planted one on her former co-star George Clooney on her way up to the podium. She also got in one of the night’s many jabs at host network NBC and its recent late-night TV fiasco saying, “Thanks CBS for believing in the 10 o’clock drama.”

Cher and Christina Aguilera provided a sneak peek of why Kristen Bell is “99 percent sure” she will leave the set of their movie Burlesque a lesbian.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy/Musical Meryl “Call me T-Bone” Streep, beat herself in the same category (she won for Julie & Julia and lost for It’s Complicated). In her acceptance speech she reflected the conflict many had on the night of celebrating glitz amid larger tragedies saying:
That's when I have my mother’s voice coming to me: "Partners in Health, shoot some money to Partners In Health, put the dress on, put on a smile and be damn grateful you have the dollars to help."…And I am grateful. I’m really grateful.

Best Actress in a Mini-Series winner for Grey Gardens Drew Barrymore was Drew Barrymore, being all endearing and joking about her lisp. Sophia Loren was Sophia Loren, still super sexy at 75. And Jennifer Aniston was Jennifer Aniston, except with a lot more leg showing than normal.

Mad Men made it a threepeat, winning Best TV Drama again. Though you’ll have to excuse me if I’m hazy on the details of the rest of the telecast, I was distracted by Christina Hendricks for some unknown reason.

And while Big Love actress Chloe Sevigny is a delightful actress who sometimes makes equally delightful bizarre fashion choices, I’m upset at her highway robbery of Jane Lynch for Best Supporting Actress in a TV series. I can hear Sue Sylvester screaming: “You think that’s hard? Try losing to the Golden Globe to a polygamist, that’s hard.”

Speaking of Jane, the out actress looked lovely in a flowing green gown with pockets — she’s still a lesbian, mind you. She also got her revenge when Glee won for Best TV Comedy/Musical. Series creator Ryan Murphy saying the show was for “anybody and everybody who got a wedgie in high school” made up for it beating my beloved 30 Rock.

In the process, Jane also gave us the night’s biggest mystery: Who was that woman sitting beside her she gave a big wet kiss when the show won? A girlfriend? A friend-friend? Lesbian and bisexual women everywhere need to know if our hearts have now been broken.

UPDATE I: Looks like the mystery gal is indeed Jane's girlfriend. She referenced her briefly in this red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest. (Hat tip, Andrea!) And Jane also references a committed relationship in this interview with The Guardian. (Hat tip, Jst_a_Grrl!) Got more scoop? Let us know.
UPDATE II: Well, ladies, prepare to be heartbroken (but happy for Jane at the same time. She told The New York Times Carpetbagger blog that she was getting married to her partner Lara in May. Congratulations, ladies. (Hat tip, Rachel!)
The night’s big male winners included Michael C. Hall (actor, TV drama), Alec Baldwin (actor, TV comedy), Jeff Bridges (actor, film drama) and Robert Downey Jr. (actor, film comedy). James Cameron won for director and his movie Avatar for best drama (The Hangover won Best Comedy). Though, in the dozen years that have passed since he crowned himself “king of the world” with Titanic, Cameron hasn’t solved his ego problem as his acceptance speech was both self-congratulatory and smug.

Fresh off her make-out session with Meryl Streep at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Friday night, Sandra Bullock was her charming self picking up the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama trophy.

And finally, a big thank you to Halle Berry and Mariah Carey for reminding us why the show is called the Golden Globes in the first place.

So, what did you think of the Globes (no, not those globes — the show, people, the show). Also, how’d you like Ricky Gervais as host? I thought he could have been meaner, but then, that’s me.

SO happy...
Sandra Bullock is finally getting recognition! She was amazing in The Blind Side and being a fan of hers since the early 90's...It's just good to see a good person, who seems so down to earth and such a loving person, finally get her time in the light. PS, she was absolutely gorgeous last night and looks GOOD in purple.
Sad The Office and Steve Carell didn't win :( but happy to see Glee win...And Ricky Gervais was hilarious!
Jane Lynch for host!
Gervais was horrible and Jane was everywhere this year, so duh! Julianna Margulies totally deserved her award - I loved the Clooney-smooch. And props to James Cameron for recognizing the genius of his ex-wife. I hope she beats him for the Oscar, but with 10 fricking films in the running (TEN!), anything could happen. (I sincerely hope this year will be the end of that little experiment.) Sigourney looking gorgeous and statueque, caring not if she sucked on SNL as her film smashes records.
Supporting actors ripped off?
Who Killed Amanda Palmer (at the Golden Globes)
Amanda Palmer was anything but subdued or classy last night at the Globes.
Exhibit A: Behold free ninja Amanda "F--king" Palmer dead on the red carpet (Bonus ukulele included!)

oh, jesus.
lol, "amanda palmer and guest." i mean, amanda's one of my heroes and all, but all neil gets is an "and guest?" he is one famous motherfucker.
i hate it when photographers caption their pictures without doing the requisite research. i understand that red carpet shoots are overwhelming and time consuming, especially when you're under strict deadlines, but you're usually given a tip sheet for arrivals. that guy must have lost his.

I'm so glad Glee won! I love the Lynch. Sandra Bullock looked amazing and Christina Hendricks? WOW.
Go here for my view on all things lesbian: http://allthingslesbeau.blogspot.com
I was entertained.
I thought overall it was a good show. But a few things; it's odd to see "Artie" from Glee upright & walking & why is Cher's hand blue in that pic. How hard was X-Tina squeezig?
Christina Hendriks?
lol, at the Golden Globes
Baaad day
I am SO bummed that Jane Lynch didn't win the GG!! But goodness, did she look stunning. And yeah, I suppose that's the new girlfriend. All hope is lost ... You know, I think this calls for a little Christina Rossetti, don't you? :
Come to me in the silence of the night;
Come in the speaking silence of a dream;
Come with soft rounded cheeks and eyes as bright
As sunlight on a stream;
Come back in tears,
O memory, hope, love of finished years.
Right, I think that's about melodramatic enough ... I'm feeling strangely better now ;)))
Glee!
So pleased that Glee won...but Jane Lynch should have won in her own right too, she makes the show what it is! (and I have a huge crush on her...lol) She looked stunning too.
Disappointed that Emily Blunt didn't win too...
I don't get all the fuss about Avatar.
And Ricky Gervais was apparently just himself...hey, don't book him if you don't like it! (I'm not a fan myself, but it always amuses me when Hollywood types are the butt of jokes, lol)
I never listen to things they say, cos what you hear gets in your way (Joan Jett)

There was some robbin' goin' on
I must know, if someone can tell me, what is with the James Cameron worship? I'm a writer and I remember when "Titanic" came out, I'd heard about the bad writing. I saw it and by the time Jack turned into the blueberry popsickle, it was the feel good comedy, in a straight jacket sort of way, of the year for me. Jeez, it was bad, but let's face it, the reason for its big box office was the squeeing girls wanting to see Leonardo. Is James Cameron like the Godfather? Is he giving people an offer they can't refuse so they'll vote for him? I don't know....
Aside from having to look at James Cameron (I was rooting for Kathryn Bigelow to win best director, because it's about time a woman won best director, or Quentin Tarantino) and Jane Lynch getting robbed, it was a good show. I thought, as host, there would be more Ricky Gervais. It seems like NBC had second thoughts about him as host, but it had already been announced, so they were stuck and just cut down how much "hosting" he would do.
As far as the Academy Awards go, since that will now be the conversation, personally, I like the Oscars decision to go back to the way it was originally with 10 Best Picture nominees. Comedies don't typically get much as far as awards, forgive the bad choice of words, but people don't tend to take comedies seriously as "real" film. Tom Hanks is one of our greatest present-day actors, but he didn't really get any recognition as a real actor until "Philadelphia" because he was a comedy actor. Comedy requires just as much skill as drama, just different skills. Opening up the field to more films means more opportunity for diversity, like comedy, in the nominations. I also liked last year when they had past winners introduce each nominee in the acting categories. Maybe it took more time, but it respected the award's history and some were actors who had retired and it was good to see true legends again.
Oh, and before I forget, speaking of a legend, I bow to the majesty that is Sophia Loren. When she walked out on that stage, she walked with an air of "I Have Arrived." I Adore Her.

Olivia Wilde
IS it just me or does olivia wilde make you tingle !! <3 she is so beautiful !!
xx
very entertaining.
I liked the show as a whole (though I have to admit that I almost forgot to watch it. if it hadn't been for twitter...).
I'm really happy for Meryl and Drew. God, they totally deserved the award! Lovely ladies, great actors!
I was expecting Jane Lynch to win, I had my fingers crossed all the time! lol It was unfair...but still, Jane represented the kids (as it's been said already. haha)
"Sadly, Olivia does not come with her dress."
That's all right. I prefer that she come without it. ;-)

avatar, really?!?!?!
Lol
I'm amused that Jane's touching Lea Michele in that picture.
Give her the gay, Jane. GIVE HER THE GAY!!
In Defence of Avatar
I've always loved awards shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes; a lot of gorgeous women dressed to the hilt, and talented too - some of my favourites won and made entertaining speeches at the Globes this year. But I'm writing in response to the criticisms of James Cameron's Avatar.
I agree, Cameron's strong suit is not dialogue. And the storyline in Avatar could be described as simplistic or unoriginal. But what if it's a timeless message we humans still need to hear, an unlearned lesson - that we are all connected, to each other and to nature, and that we should respect others and live in harmony. Rather than kill them and rape their land.
What I see is this : Avatar retells a timeless story of good vs evil, with an emotionally involving story. Cameron has created a fantasy world in Pandora that is beautiful, stunningly imagined and realised - and wrapped it up in an anti-war film that delivers exciting action without gratuitous violence. He's used cutting edge technology to seamlessly merge human performances with cgi. And he's delivered it all in 3D. It's so well done you don't just watch this movie, you feel like you're actually in it. I was blown away by the visceral experience. If you ask me, it's a fantastic achievement. I love this film!

Umm Aniston...wow! I never
Umm Aniston...wow! I never thought Aniston was hot but damn when she came out with that slit on her dress.
Im gonna sound like a huge perve when I say that when the cast of Mad Men came up stage, my eyes immediately went to Christina Hendricks and her...umm...golden globes win.
