A scientific study of the hormonal effects of the gold bikini

If you’ll allow me, I’d like to test a theory. I’m going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer as truthfully as possible. My intent is purely scientific, I assure you. I pose it only in the interest of posterity and the advancement of humankind. So, are you ready? Again, please answer honestly.

Does the golden bikini work on fangirls like it does on fanboys?

I speak, of course, of the famous/infamous gold bikini Princess Leia wore when she was being held as a slave girl by Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. It may in fact be the most famous bikini on the planet, not to mention the least buoyant. And in the 24 years that have passed since its image first seared itself onto our collective subconscious, it has spawned countless imitators. Remember the episode of Friends where Rachel dressed up for Ross in the gold bikini? I think that may have been its official outing as the No. 1 fantasy in all of geekdom — well, at least for straight guys. … continue reading

Favorite female geeks: Who's the geekiest of 2007?

I'm a geek worshipper. It's really a form of positive self-esteem, since I am kind of a geek myself. I always love to find women in entertainment who seem to be geeks, not only in the characters they play, but also in real life. GeekSugar.com shares that sentiment and has kicked off a poll of the most popular female geeks of 2007.

First candidate: Mary Lynn Rajskub, Chloe O'Brian on 24.

The pictures are from her spread in Geek Monthly earlier this year. Although Chloe is an übergeek on 24, always able to hack into secret data just in time to save Jack's life, Rajskub herself is not too technically savvy. But in my opinion, she has geek cred because she does things like appear as a troubadour on Gilmore Girls and volunteer for the Young Storytellers Program. I do have one geekish issue with Chloe & company, though. Are we really supposed to believe that a government agency is smart enough to use Macs? … continue reading

TV comes down with guest star-itis

Writers strike or not, November heralds in sweeps. And sweeps heralds in guest stars. And guest stars herald in ... OK, I'm officially out of stuff to herald. But I do know that when it comes to sweeps month, the very special guest star is trumped only by the lesbian kiss as the most popular sweeps stunt. So, let's rate the ratings stunts, starting with the big guns.

Note: A few of these guest stars are showing up tonight, so set your DVRs!

Al Gore on 30 Rock (tonight!): Former vice president. Oscar winner. Nobel Peace Prize winner. Rightful Almost next president of the United States.
Stunt Wattage:
10, but we should dial it down to 8.5 to conserve energy.

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! October 26th, 2007

It's "Must-See Bunny TV" in this week's episode of She Made Me Watch This! Of the 29 shows we started out watching this season, find out which ones are still on our must-see list (besides Bones), which ones we've given up (besides Private Practice), and which we're on the fence about (get it together, Reaper!).

Then we review two TV shows released on DVD this week: The L Word Season 4, and Veronica Mars Season 3.

Along the way, there's tangential reminiscing about Dynasty and Moonlighting, a pie chart, and a rant from Lori about why the road to hell is paved with insubordination.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for the ladies of the Scream Awards

Theoretically, the Spike TV Scream Awards should totally not be my thing. First, it’s on Spike TV, the channel with the subtle tagline “Get More Action” and programming aimed at the young adult male market. You know, the polar opposite of Lifetime Television for Women. Second, it’s an award show dedicated to horror, sci-fi and fantasy. While I enjoy a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, I’ve never been a big horror fan. I can’t help it; I scare easily. And finally, I can’t take any event seriously that asks Paris Hilton to appear. But then I heard Lena Headey would also be there, and suddenly all that other stuff didn’t seem to matter that much.

Oh, Lena. Even your crazy choice of potato-sack couture could not deter my devotion. Now I’m going to have to tape the telecast and fast-forward to your parts. Or, better yet, wait until some similarly stalkerish devoted fan posts the clips online.

The Scream Awards were held last Friday in Los Angeles, and the broadcast airs at 10:00 tonight on Spike. And for those of you with a somewhat less obsessive view of lovely Lena, there are some other reasons to watch. Like, say, Rosario Dawson’s tongue: … continue reading

"Heroes": The superpowered season 2 premiere

Heroes is back tonight, and my inner fangirl rejoices!

In addition to Lyndsy Fonseca as April, the would-be (but won't be) lesbian cheerleader, there are four fetching new females to watch out for this season: [Spoiler alert! You've been warned.]

Variety revealed that Kristen Bell will be playing a character named Elle, a "sexy, mysterious young lady who has ties to the supposed death of Peter, H.R.G.'s past and the future of Claire."

Her 13-episode arc begins in October. Reportedly, Tim Kring, the show's creator, described her as "'a little unstable' and 'a cautionary tale of what our Heroes could become.'" Oh, Kristen, my TV has missed you — insert joke about Elle's power having something to do with zingy one-liners here. … continue reading

Kristen Bell not "Lost," may find Broadway

Without Veronica Mars this fall, TV will undoubtedly be a quieter, less mysterious place. Or at least, it will be missing the skills — not to mention sassy good looks — of Kristen Bell.

Earlier this week, rumor had it that Bell might find a place on Lost (which might have been enough to convince me to watch this next season). Sadly, it wasn't meant to be. But apparently for good cause: It's possible that Bell may head back to Broadway.

Yep, I said head back. Or am I the only one who didn't know that Bell studied musical theater and even played opposite Laura Linney and Liam Neeson in the The Crucible (2002)? Granted, my fan appreciation of Kristen Bell and Veronica Mars was limited to enjoying the show on a weekly basis. It never approached that obsession resulting in the ability to recite episode history and guest star bios I've come to associate with Joss Whedon projects. But still, this seems like something I should have known, especially after this Emmy performance (hi, Alyson Hannigan!): … continue reading

PETA honors sexiest vegetarians

After tallying 110,000 votes cast on on its website, animal rights organization PETA today announced their annual picks for the world's sexiest vegetarians. American Idol-winner and country star Carrie Underwood claimed the female title this year (as she did in 2005):

Celebrity mug shots: the good, the bad and the crumpin'

by Dorothy Snarker

In this month's issue of Jane magazine, stars from the Sundance Film Festival (uh, wasn't that in January?) answered the question "What‘s your crime?" for a photo shoot. These true confessions came in the form of mug shots spelling out these so-called crimes. The spread yielded nary a felony (OK, Paul Rudd's answer raises an eyebrow ... ), but there were plenty of admissions of bad behavior and nasty habits.

My favorite: Mandy Moore pleading guilty to her crimes against our eardrums as the "Singer of 'Candy.'"
