María José Bello Talks Making Barcedes and the Barcedes Fandom

Barcedes,” the pairing of María Mercedes Möller (often referred to by the diminutive “Meche” or “Mechita”) and Bárbara Román on the Chilean telenovela “Perdona Nuestros Pecados” (PNP), represents the latest in a series of positive lesbian love stories coming out of Latin America.

In September, AfterEllen interviewed María Soledad Cruz Court, who plays Meche, to find out more about one half of the Chilean power couple. This month, we sat down with María José Bello, who plays Bárbara, to find out more about the fierce resident lesbian who stole Meche’s heart.

As always, thanks to Barcedistas Carla Andrade and Ana Ávalos Reyes, who kindly helped translate to/from Spanish for us, and a very special thanks to Catalina Fuentes and Lesbicanarias, who asked the interview questions on our behalf in person with María José! Readers interested in learning more about María José will find an additional interview, done with Lesbicanarias, with English subtitles here.

As a side note, according to Variety, PNP got three times the number of viewers of its next closest rival during its run. That’s huge. Although Chilean viewers likely came for the “priest seeks to avenge sister’s suicide but falls in love instead” plot, that still means a massive number of Chileans were exposed to Barcedes. Well done to the cast and crew of PNP!

And now, without further ado, María José on Barcedes and the Barcedistas.

What was your reaction when you first read the script of “Perdona Nuestros Pecados” and found out that your character was involved in a same-sex love story?

Honestly, I was immediately happy. It implied a professional and political challenge in a country that has just started to talk about gender identity; where we have Daniela Vega winning an Oscar for a movie, among other things, about the recently approved law about gender identity change. So I found it wonderful, and the truth is that I immediately felt very happy.

What does Bárbara see in Mercedes?

Her ideology, her idealism. We talked about it in another interview (the interview with Lesbicanarias), and I think the most interesting thing about them as characters is that they are working women in the 50s; women who studied in university, which was something very rare, especially among women in that era. Mercedes is a fighter, she loves her job, she is very professional and that is the first thing that Bárbara is attracted to. Additionally, her mixture of professional woman and fighter on one hand, and on the other hand being childish and naïve, just opening to love, I think that mix is what attracts Bárbara.

What is your favorite thing about Barcedes?

Well, undoubtedly Barcedes itself is a result of the public’s reception. “Barcedes” was created by those who welcomed our story with so much love, so in reality my favorite thing about Barcedes are the Barcedistas! Thanks to them, our story has had the impact that it has had, and this is priceless. From the infinite love, the light, they have enabled the message of Bárbara and Mercedes to spread, so credit is due to the all the fans of this story in “Perdona Nuestros Pecados.”

Which is your favorite Barcedes scene and why?

Well, I’m not sure I can pick one! I’ll say the same ones I said the other day during the other interview (with Lesbicanarias). But I think that the first one was the first kiss, at the church. The first real kiss, because there was a previous kiss, more tentative, but this was the first real one, the beginning of this big love story in the church. Bárbara and Mercedes are in the church…when I go to find her and she is praying and there we kiss for the first time in a more intense way. That’s the first. Later the scene that we do at Mercedes’ house, which was where the pool was, that was our first love scene and for Mercedes it’s the first time that she has an intimate encounter with another person, either man or woman. She was a virgin and it’s a great love scene. I think it’s very beautiful.

And the other one that I like a lot, because it was an acting challenge, is when we’re captured by my husband Nicanor and Mercedes’ father and brothers and they prevent us from escaping together. I find that was very dramatic, that was complex, and also all the illusion of escaping together and making real their love, and then how it’s broken and the possibility of making their love real, seems an incredible scene to portray. And lastly, the hospital. When I was at the point of giving birth and dying in the ER, and I kiss Mercedes and we make that declaration of love that is a quote from a Chilean telenovela from the 80s, that was very beautiful-it’s a classic in our country, in Chile-and we quote that scene, but this time, 20 years later, it’s between two women.

How can Bárbara be so certain that she can have a life with Mercedes at that time? Where is her strength coming from?

The truth is that there isn’t much logic behind how love works. I think that’s the interesting thing: she has this profound conviction-which has more to do with feelings, with the heart, with love-and there are no more questions. It’s simply to be happy at all costs, and to be happy is to be with Mercedes and there’s nothing more to think about.

Lesbian couples on TV often have very large fandoms, both on a national and international level. However, the reaction is not the same for heterosexual couples, so actresses who take on these roles have no idea how famous they will become. What has surprised you the most about the reaction towards Barcedes and their fandom?

Everything! The truth is that it exceeded my expectations with respect to the impact that these characters would have, because effectively we are in a word that still hasn’t sufficiently advanced on the subjects of homosexuality, lesbianism, of the LGBT community or gender identity, so I imagined that there would be controversy, but what we got? No, no never. It didn’t occur to me that it would be like this. The truth is that I am surprised that it has crossed borders, because above all, the truth is it is one thing is to have such an important and massive reception in the country where you work, but it’s another to receive the love and a good reception from so many parts of the world. That has surprised me.

What are you proudest of regarding Barcedes?

To have been part of a couple that generates discussion and questioning not just here (in Chile) and that has sparked so much dialogue with women of my country and of the world about their own stories, that has made me very proud. Because additionally, look, even the action of being onstage or being a character, whatever it may be, is a political action and more than that, that makes me proud. Additionally, it’s not solitary work. The truth is that I’m proud of meeting Sole Cruz, Soledad, and working with her, which was a great discovery as a professional, makes me prouder, gives me joy. The truth is that I don’t know if it’s pride, but I’m happy to have met Sole. It was a pleasure working with her, and together we discovered Barcedes and together we took this love story, and also by Nicolas Alemparte, who is the director, and the good production team behind the show. The truth is that I’m super thankful, more than proud.

If Bárbara and Mercedes were living in today’s society, how would their lives be?

Well, everything would be nicer. Certainly we would be working, of course, because Bárbara and Mercedes enjoy their work a lot, so surely we would be teaching in a school, high-school, university. We would be teaching music, language, or managing a school. We would also have some discretion, although less than in the 50s, but we would have some discretion because she’s (Bárbara) a mom. But we would be in a time where it would be easier to talk about being a homoparental couple, so Mercedes could be intending to undergo treatment to be a mother herself, and we would be living a quiet life. We would have a civil partnership, because in Chile we don’t have same-sex marriage, but Bárbara and Mercedes would be taking more serious steps, living their love with no problem, with many fewer secrets and less mistrust than in the 50s. If they dared do it in the 50s-60s, imagine in 2018!

For American culture, it is not common to see a man crying in such a dramatic way. What is Cristián Carvajal’s method for crying?

Well, for this question I think you have to ask Cristián Carvajal. I don’t know his way of reaching that emotion. What I can tell you of Cristián Carvajal is that he is a tremendous talent, a great friend as well, a super partner and the truth is that what was written as a character and how he performed it are different, and I think that that is beautiful how one reads a character that is already well written, in a telenovela that is already well written, but Cristián always looked to give another aspect to this character: less troglodyte, because he was a little less macho. He was a little more macho in his attitude towards marriage, and he (Cristián) constructed a man much more fragile, vulnerable. Because he is a commissioner, he is powerful, but at home he suffers and hurts, until finally he supports Bárbara in some way and lets her go with Mercedes with his daughter. It’s a very beautiful aspect that Cristián gave Nicanor and it’s totally to his credit, who gave him his subtlety, this sensitivity. That’s what Cristián gave Nicanor.

The message in this story is very clear: love is love. What do you think about the fact that homosexuality is still a hot topic in Chile in 2018? Do you think that a lot has changed since the 50s?

No. Lamentably, 60 years after what we saw on the show, today in 2018 not much has changed, which is sad because the fact that Barcedes exists and is so controversial and has crossed borders also has to do with the fact that homosexuality is a subject that hasn’t “normalized,” because if it was a normal topic like your question said before, when you said that straight couples don’t cause as much furor as gay couples or lesbians, it’s still the minority aren’t viewed as “normal.” That seems wrong to me, and I hope that the times advance and there are changes. I have hope and believe that for our children, at least I believe that these new generations like the “Perennials”-I think that now there’s a generation called that-believe that love is love and have fewer questions, and I think that we’re going there. I think that our children, at least my son and the children of my friends…this perspective that I have, I will tell you that there is more acceptance. Acceptance of the “other” as it is and it seems beautiful to me that in ten years we’ll have another interview or we’ll have a conversation in which this will be less important. That would be good.

We’ve seen the talent and chemistry that you and Soledad Cruz share onscreen. Are you going to work together again? We know that in Chile TV couples tend to appear together again in other shows. Would you like that for you as well?

I would love that! Look, always when you have a good partner, it is good to keep working together because you generate codes, the work is fun with your companion. Sole and I were on the same wavelength. We were interested in the same things: interviewing women, going out to eat with women who told us their life stories, their sexuality; lesbians who contributed to our story. And we were both so motivated that it was very good to have a partner like that. Of course, I would love to continue working with my dear Sole again, happily!

What impact do you want to make in the world through acting and radio?

Look, the truth is that I don’t go through life asking myself what is the impact that I want to have. I simply want to do what I do because I love it. I think it’s very important to do what you love, really love. I love radio, too, and try to be more aligned with myself and my thoughts and my heart and hope to continue doing it. To be honest with the world and always be as brave with myself as I can is the only thing that interests me. The day that I don’t feel conviction in what I do, on that day I’ll go sell coffee or do something else. So more than the impact that I want to generate in the world…mmm…I don’t think about it. I think simply about being who I am.

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about everything, really! I have to say that as in the “Passionate Women” program on Radio Romántica, I am a passionate woman! I’m passionate about my work, but really, I love acting, and I hope I can perform until I die. I love my family, I love my husband, I love my son. I have children with the man that I love, and I’m so lucky when I look at my son and tell myself “He’s the spitting image of his dad,” and I love seeing him. I was certain that he was the man for me, and that makes me very happy, just like my job. It’s what I love. I have wonderful friends that I chose, my family of friends who are also wonderful. I love them too, passionately. And I love sports too: running and swimming. Life! I’m completely passionate about life!

What is next for you? Where can your fans see you next?

Well, for now they can only hear me on the radio and watch me on the radio station webpage, so from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on “Hoy es tu día” every day on Radio Romántica. In terms of television or theatre, nothing for now because I’m pregnant and I’m about to go on maternity leave, so I will get back to work around June 2019, which is when I will be ready. I’m leaving soon, so I will be preoccupied with taking care of the new baby. And now in Spanish!

Me encantaría.

Amo a mi familia, amo a mi hombre, amo a mi hijo.
