Gay Girl’s Goggles “The Secret Circle” SnapCap (1.06)

When only four percent of scripted TV shows feature LGBT characters, what’s a gay girl to do? Why, strap on your gay goggles and watch TV along with us, of course! Our handy appraisal scale is better than any old letter grade. Other sites A+. We say, “What about our lezzy-lady feelings?”

No resurrection spells happened after the last episode of The Secret Circle, so dead Nick’s still dead. But the bound circle binds not only the six witches, but their families as well. Conveniently, Nick has an older, cuter brother, Jake. And Jake’s at the wake. Adam thinks he’s a snake. He caused Faye heartbreak. Will he get a fair shake? (Sorry, that was a mistake.)

AFTERELLEN BAIT

When I learned of this new CW show about witches, I thought it would be about women. Naturally. And after six episodes, despite the presence of “hot guys,” the women have more chemistry with each other than any of the men and women do. Melissa and Nick were kind of sweet, but Nick is no more. We now know that the only reason for the men on the show is to drive the women into each other’s arms. At the wake, Faye gets high on herbs and Melissa finds her balancing on a rail at the edge of the pier. Faye: “Do you think me and you have enough magic to fly?” Yes, Faylissa. Fly high and go down hard.

Also, Diana broke up with Adam because of the whole “written in the stars” thing between Cassie and Adam. Where does she go for comfort? Cassie’s arms. What shall we call this ship? Dassie? Blead? Make (as in “out, already”)?

FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS!

What warms the heart more than Grams making cookies?

Except that these cookies are for the wake and Grams knows that the presence of demons in Chance Harbor means scary things for the increasingly not-so-secret circle. Melissa, meanwhile, visits Nick’s bedroom (do any adults live there?) and cries in his bed. She misses her little worm.

If only Faye had been there, that ship would be riding the waves by now.

MOMENTS OF FAYE

Faye wasn’t around nearly enough this episode, but she still had her moments.

“Amy Leone stood up in English yesterday and read this tragic poem she wrote about Nick. Something about thorns and a rose or a vine. The whole thing was pretty hilarious.”

When Melissa says she’s going home: “Melissa, I know you miss Nick. We all do. But you can’t spend the rest of your life lying on your bedroom floor listening to depressing music.”

“It’s been two days, Faye.”

As ex-BF Jake leaves the bar: “Thank God he didn’t see me. I have had an outfit planned for this day for the last two years. And this was not it.” Fortunately, we get to see the outfit. And we appreciate it much more than Jake the rake.

THE FOREBODING

Grams Jane tells Cassie that the Blake lineage is more powerful than all the others and she has the responsibility to protect the circle. Too bad she can’t remember to lock the door. A woman in black comes into the house to get Cassie’s blood and Jake the fake, who’s also a witch, rushes to her aid. Unfortunately, he turns out to be working for the True Believers, a group of witch-hunters, just like the woman in black. A witch witch-hunter, eh. Anybody else think of the Ex-Gays?

For some reason, Grams also gives Cassie the family crystal, which apparently lets Cassie do magic alone. Her first act was to accidentally help Jake the flake kill his sister in True Believing. Oops. Take back the rock, Jane. Cassie is not ready to rock.
