A glimpse at the “Glee” Super Bowl episode

Are you ready to do “The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle”? Of course you are – it’s been what feels like forever since we’ve had a new episode of Glee. The good news is that the first new episode of the year – which will be the show’s biggest in budget to date – is less than a week away and will air in TV’s biggest slot of the year: after the Super Bowl.

The episode airs this Sunday following the Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers matchup in Super Bowl XLV on Fox, so it’s only fitting that the pregame festivities will also have a Glee imprint: Lea Michele (Rachel) will join the ranks of singers like Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Ray Charles in singing “America the Beautiful,” ahead of Christina Aguilera performing the national anthem.

The episode, titled “The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle,” will also have a football theme to it and features a much-buzzed about cast mash-up of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” paired with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Head’s Will Roll” in the episode, which, according to Dianna Agron, took seven hours to film and will feature the ladies of New Directions dressed in vintage and blood-stained dresses.

Kevin McHale (Artie) fronts the “Thriller” mix, while Michele will perform Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” Cory Monteith (Finn) tackles The Zombies’ “She’s Not There” and Darren Criss singing “Bills Bills Bills” by Destiny’s Child.

Jane Lynch told TVGuide.com that the episode will feature Sue’s beloved Cheerios leaving the squad in favor of the Glee club, forcing the legendary coach to forfeit Nationals, which brings Katie Couric in to interview Sue as the year’s biggest loser. Sylvester also will apparently get a bad tattoo if this short trailer offers any indication.

According to the “super” Glee promo, Coach Sylvester will launch Brittany out of a canon and the return of Dot Jones’ Coach Bieste.

And if the song snippets, story line teases and trailers aren’t enough, take a peek at some of the episodic photos from the Big Game episode:

Looks like Artie will get the mega Slushie treatment from the football team.

“Thriller” looks intense.

Michele already looks thrilling.

Rumor has it that McKinley High’s football team will make nice with the glee club in the episode, which continues Season 2’s gay bullying story line
