NBC picks up a lesbian romantic comedy

To what lengths would lesbians have to go in order to get a lesbian-starring TV show on a major network? Listen to “I Kissed a Girl” nonstop for the rest of our lives? Date Rose Garcia from The Real L Word? Light candles and slow dance? Give up Brittana forever?

Whoa, whoa–before you do something too drastic like tattoo the word “Biebian” on your forehead, chew on this: NBC has picked up a half-hour pilot called I Hate That I Love You, revolving around a lesbian couple.

The rom-com series comes from the genius of Jhoni Marchenko, the writer, producer and Emmy recipient for Will & Grace, and producer of Men in Trees (whatever happened to Anne Heche?) and Murphy Brown.

While my goosebumps have goosebumps at the thought of a real-life fictional lesbian couple on network TV, I am a wee bit irked by the logline of the story:

“A straight couple introduces two of its lesbian friends to one another and what results is both instant attraction and a pregnancy.”

A pregnancy? Wowee! The theme is so original, I’m tearing up. But I guess lesbians need to be around sperm and procreate to still appear as women instead of mutants in the eyes of the great American public.

Regardless, this is huge, and I mean huge! An actual sitcom starring two gay women? I bet you’d never thought you’d see the day in your lesbian lifetime. But times they are a-changin’ – we gays are about to serve openly in the military, so why not have lesbian main characters on NBC? Plus, Marchenko is BFFs with Sarah Paulson and Sandra Bernhard, so if we’re lucky, we’ll get both of them (dating each other?) on I Hate That I Love You when the pilot premieres.

What are your thoughts on this big news? Who on Earth should play the lesbian couple?
