TV Alert: “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” debuts tonight — Lucy Lawless included

If you watched Spartacus: Blood and Sand, you know that the series is not for the faint of heart. The amount of blood and violence makes Dexter seem tame by comparison.

The prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, may be even more violent than Blood and Sand. The first five minutes, which take place in a gladiator arena, are almost too graphic to watch. The most oft-used word in the show is “cock.” So why are we alerting you to this show? Why do we ever alert you to a show? Women. Hot women.

The two you recognize immediately are Gaia (Jaime Murray), who is new to the series, and Lucretia (Lucy Lawless), her longtime friend. Gaia returns to Capua after the death of her husband and she is looking for fun. Her first stop is Lucretia.

Yes, Gaia and Lucretia have sex. Yes, it is steaming hot. If you are one of the hundreds of thousands of Xena fans still bitter about the lack of, er, completion between the warrior princess and Gabrielle, Gods offers plenty of footage to use for a super-Sapphic Lucretia/Gabby mashup.

Make no mistake, though; Gods is no Xena. It is raw and gritty and explicit. It contains lots of full nudity and graphic sex between all combinations of genders. But the story is compelling and original – I’ve never seen anything like it. And we’ll be back Monday to talk about what happened.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena airs Friday night at 10 p.m. ET on Starz. Will you be watching?
