“Off the Map” promo puts familiar faces in new places

I’ve looked forward to seeing Off the Map ever since Dorothy Snarker told us earlier this year that it features Caroline Dhavernas, aka Jaye, from the cancelled-too-soon Wonderfalls.

Now, after watching the new extended trailer and a few clips from the show, I’m downright excited. Sure, it’s produced by Shonda Rhimes and has that Grey’s Anatomy/ Private Practice feel to it. And sure, Off the Map is about gorgeous, brainy doctors who have lots of sex in between solving never-before-seen medical crises.

But this time, Rhimes is yielding the reins to former Grey’s and PP writer/producer Jenna Bans, so we have reason to expect a few new twists. Plus, we’ve heard that at least one of Map‘s writers wrote for Wonderfalls.

Here’s the latest teaser, thanks to Deadline Hollywood.

Yes that is the lovely and talented Mamie Gummer, who shares genes – and possibly jeans – with the mighty Meryl Streep. Gummer has made a name for herself on stage and this may be the role that brings her wider recognition. I already have a crush.

Gummer and Dhavernas seemed destined to become the Cristina and Meredith of Off the Map, judging by this clip.

Erstwhile vampires Valerie Cruz (True Blood) and Rachel Lefevre (Twilight) also star.

Oh, and some hunky guys like Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Jason George (Grey’s Anatomy) and Martin Henderson (Big Sky) are in Off the Map, too, in case you’re interested.

No word at this point on whether any of the characters are lesbians, but we certainly have reason to hope. After all, we tend to be the ones who go off to Africa for the sake of humanity.

Off the Map premiers Jan. 12 on ABC. Will you be watching? What are you thoughts on the cast? Do you expect anything new from this latest Shondaland production?
