“Big Love” and HBO announce the end of the marriage

Dedicated Big Love fans probably aren’t all that surprised that the show will end after the upcoming season. HBO announced on Thursday that Season 5 will be the last.

I have always loved Big Love, but last season was not exactly stellar. Even Chloe Sevigny said Season 4 was “awful,” although she later said that her venting was overly harsh and she apologized to the show’s creators and writers.

Part of the problem, I think, was that Big Love had only nine episodes and tried to cram a whole lot of plot into them. The third season was amazing and perhaps the writers were trying to top it. But Bill’s decision to run for political office seemed to come from nowhere and it seemed to have a snowball effect, with one thing after another twisting the plot to the point that it just snapped.

My sentiments exactly.

But the finale was a biggie (spoilers for that episode ahead). Bill won the election and, at his victory, introduced his three wives. Now the Henricksons are public polygamists and methinks many of Bill’s constituents will not be happy about it.

What’s on deck for Season 5? Showrunners Mark Olsen and Will Scheffer aren’t saying, but obviously have a big finish in mind. According to E!Online’s “Watch With Kristin,” they said, “When we created Big Love in 2002, we had a strong conception of the journey the Henrickson family would make over the course of the series, of the story we had to tell …While we were in the writers’ room this year shaping our fifth season, we discovered that we were approaching the culmination of that story.” Sheffer later added, “I think you’ll agree that this is definitely our best season to date.”

Sevigny seems to agree. “I think that finally you see the Henricksons having to deal with some consequences, for their actions and for their lifestyle. And they are finally getting a little bit of comeuppance.”

Sources also told “Watch With Kristin” that we’ll see the return of Tina Majorino as Heather, which is great news regardless of what else happens.

Big Love has always been a personal favorite of mine and as much as I hate to see it go, I applaud HBO for giving the writers time to resolve the show properly. I can’t wait to see what happens when the new season starts Jan. 16.

Will you miss Big Love? What do you expect for the show’s final season?
