TV Alert: “Rizzoli & Isles” finale goes out with a bang, bang, bang

Lesbian Subtext Lovers: I have glimpsed our future and all I can say is, go back! (What? No Say Anything fans here? Fine, go ask your older sister.) But seriously, I have seen the Rizzoli & Isles finale and know tonight will be a bittersweet experience for fans. Sweet because, seriously, how many times will Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander touch? Bitter because, really, over so soon?

Rizzoli & Isles has been the breakout cable hit of the summer. It is the No. 1–rated basic cable show on TV right now, beating longstanding champ The Closer for the title. And it has already been renewed for a 13-episode second season. But that means a whole year between tonight’s episode and fresh new subtext to obsess over. How will we cope? Is there a support group?

The good news? Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli show no signs of stopping their non-stop Twitter conversation. The official TNT character tweeters have been chatting up a storm with each other. And let’s just say they aren’t exactly playing down the lesbian subtext. Witness:

Even better, the stars themselves seem aware of the show’s rabid lesbian fanbase. Sasha has tweeted fans about the “Rizzles” shipper fandom.

The finale itself is intense. No, I mean it, intense. And there’s a lot of shooting – a lot of shooting, hence its title “When the Gun Goes Bang, Bang, Bang.” The official synopsis reads:

After an undercover cop working a narcotics-smuggling sting is shot dead, the killers next turn their sites on Boston homicide headquarters, leaving Jane, Maura and Frankie Jr. trapped in a fight for survival on their home turf.  It’s a situation that will force Maura to challenge herself like never before.

Have I mentioned it is intense? And that there is a year until the show returns again? Quick, someone come hold me.

Rizzoli & Isles season finale airs at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on TNT. And be sure to come back here tomorrow for a fresh, steaming Subtext Recap of the finale.
