Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Les/Bi News Roundup

April showers have come and gone, and it’s been a big month for us over here at AfterEllen. We’ve got some seriously stellar exclusive interviews with Hayley Kiyoko, the two Rachels from Disobedience and more. We hit The Dinah hard, repped at ClexaCon, and snagged our rainbow Mickey ears. There’s a lot to cover this month, so Lez get to it!

Disney is getting rainbow ears for Pride But not everyone is happy about them. The “Mickey Mouse Rainbow Love” ears will reportedly sell for $18 a pair. Some say the statement is not enough from the House of Mouse, and others are gobsmacked by the gesture, considering it’s been mostly crickets from the juggernaut over the years. Most members of the LGBT community just want more representation. Preach.

Will you be grabbing a pair this summer? Here are some of the mixed reactions.

AfterEllen hit the red carpet this year and chatted with some celesbians about their favorite moments living it up at The Dinah events over the years. Check out the video below and read the full story here.

https://youtu.be/UjxDihPqe58 Everything Sucks for fans of ’90s lesbian nostalgia You may have heard that Netflix decided not to renew the great, grungy ’90s original series Everything Sucks. For Gen X-er lesbians who grew up in the decade, the show featured a poignant storyline that felt both realized and real about a couple of teenage girls who come to terms with and blossom in their sexuality. Our editor-in-chief Memoree Joelle wrote a reaction piece to the news and discussed its place among shows like My So-Called Life. Check it out here.

Actress Peyton Kennedy, who played Kate Messner, sat down with Memoree to discuss what the character has meant to her and why she isn’t finished telling the story of this young teen lesbian who actually gets the girl in the end. Read our exclusive interview here.

AfterEllen chatted with The Rachels about that scene in “Disobedience” I think it’s fair to say that Disobedience has been the most anticipated lesbian film of the year so far, and it officially hit limited theaters over the weekend. Survey says: it’s nothing short of incredible. We have lots of Disobedience yumminess going on over here, so make sure you check it all out. Our interview with both Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams is here, Jocelyn’s review is here, and see where Jocelyn was quoted in the fabulous New York Times article by Maureen Dowd here.

Also, don’t forget to give Disobedience your time and your dollars. Drive to a theater and go see it if you can, so that studios will realize they need to make more films like this one. A night with the one and only ‘Lesbian Jesus’ Getty

Just a few short days after she released her new album “Expectations”, which is still on repeat in my Spotify, AfterEllen spent the evening watcher Hayley Kiyoko perform and attending a Q&A. She talked about mental health, her favorite track on the album, how she’s handling her newfound fame, and more. We have a rundown of all the sound bytes here, so take a look so you won’t be “Curious” later ;). Ellen Page is collaborating with Lauren Morelli! Hold onto your flannel ladies, because this is some seriously fun news. Netflix has greenlit an original series with Lauren Morelli at the steering wheel as showrunner, EP, and writer. Ellen Page has officially joined Tales of the City as Shawna, the daughter of Laura Linney’s character, Mary Ann Singleton.

Karen Frost’s takeaways from ClexaCon The second annual ClexaCon was held earlier this month, and AfterEllen’s very own Karen Frost attended! A convention created in response to the bonkers number of lesbian deaths on television in 2016 triggered the community to gather everyone for a few days to celebrate our wins and have the conversation about representation that’s needed. Here are a few of the key things Karen took away from the event. ClexaCon has announced next year’s dates in Vegas with room blocks opening up on May 4th. Here are a few highlights from this year’s event!

https://twitter.com/ClexaCon/status/989917140512731136 When We Rise and Lena Waithe win GLAAD Awards Remember the fantastic NBC miniseries that aired last year? Well it won the GLAAD award for best TV movie or limited series! On top of that, our girl Lena Waithe won for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None. She was presented the award by Halle Berry. Check out the video of her incredible speech!

https://twitter.com/glaad/status/986694902196199424 Janelle Monáe is one of us! In the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine and just a couple short days before the release of her visual album “Dirty Computer”, singer Janelle Monáe finally opened up over her long-speculated sexuality. She told the magazine,

“Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker.”

As a woman of color from a Baptist background in the heart of Kansas, Monáe has made a bold and brave statement by coming out, particularly in this political climate. We’re proud of her, and we are here for the feminist, LGBT anthem that is “Dirty Computer”. You can buy the album now and read the rest of the Rolling Stone interview here. We are living in a special time for proud, powerful music by out women.

In case you missed it, here’s my favorite music video from the new album. Vaginas. Vaginas everywhere.

https://youtu.be/PaYvlVR_BEc Bill Cosby is officially guilty, and don’t forget a lesbian led the charge You’ve all heard by now that Bill Cosby has FINALLY been found guilty. The verdict breathes new life into a #MeToo movement that had hints of becoming stale after it rode the wave of pins and black dresses during awards show season. Just as we were all starting to wonder if time would actually be up for anyone other than Harvey Weinstein, word released that Cosby was found guilty in the retrial for the assault and drugging of Andrea Constand, the only victim for whom the statute of limitations hadn’t run out.

Constand came out back ins 2015 amongst accusations and a claim from Cosby that he just knew how to read the desires of the women he assaulted. Cosby assaulted Constand back in 2004. You can read an incredible article about her story by the Advocate here. Is Duck Butter the new Disobedience? The Tribeca Film Festival wrapped up this week, and one lesbian film came out of nowhere, shining bright like a femme’s diamond earrings. Sure, “duck butter” is also a phrase that, according to Urban Dictionary, means something really gross. But it’s also a funny, fresh romantic comedy penned by Alia Shawkat. The film is about two women who decide to have sex every hour on the hour. My interest is officially piqued.

https://youtu.be/H1UsvjOYCyQ Abbi Jacobson is ALSO one of us! We’re on fire in the month of April, ladies. In a Vanity Fair interview earlier this month, the Broad City writer and star came out as bisexual. (PS, Broad City spent its entire last season bleeping out Donald Trump’s name, so if you aren’t watching you probably should be.) When asked about her own dating life outside show, Jacobson replied,

I kind of go both ways; I date men and women, they have to be funny, doing something they love. I don’t know-I’ve never really been interviewed about this before.”
You can read the full Vanity Fair interview here.

Cynthia Nixon is making a strong showing For any haters out there may be harboring any “unqualified lesbian” feelings about Cynthia Nixon, I’m here to squash you. The woman is here to play, and she’s getting down and dirty, focusing mostly on policy and pointing out where her opponent is failing. I mostly just wanted to make sure we’re all still keeping out eye on Miranda here. If you haven’t seen this beautiful expose on her from New York Magazine, give it a look.

That’s all for this month! Is there anything I missed? Let me know in the comments! I will now leave you with this Insta video of Portia and her dogs.
