Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Les/ Bi News Roundup

TGIF ladies! While Trump is off in Davos showing off his very stable, genius knowledge of our economy, we’re over here still riding our high from the empowerment at the Women’s March last weekend and the Oscar noms this week. Also, Grown-ish tackles biphobia and we might be getting lots more Arizona in Grey’s Anatomy.

Lez get to it! Two out and proud lesbians have made history at the Oscars! We brought you the list of Oscar nominations when they were announced earlier this week, but this is too big not to make you all see it here, too. Both of these historical nominations are the for the Netflix film Mudbound, which we all have no excuses not to have seen now.

Rachel Morrison is not only the first out lesbian, but the first woman to be nominated in the Best Cinematography category at the Academy Awards. The New York Times recently spoke to Morrison on the phone, and she had this to say about her nomination:

I am incredibly honored and I’m hoping that it’s just the beginning. I hope that it tells more women that they can get behind the camera. It’s a dream I’ve been chasing my entire career and I never necessarily thought it would happen. It’s also a tremendous honor to be the first.

Dee Rees made herstory as the first black woman to be nominated for her writing in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for Mudbound. She has said in the past that her 2011 film Pariah, about a 17 year-old girl learning to accept herself as a lesbian, is semi-autobiographical.

Rees also adapted the short story The Hanging Stranger for Amazon Prime’s Philip K Dick’s Electric Dreams, which she told Variety was a creative outlet for her after the 2016 presidential election. Season 2 One Day at a Time is out! The Netflix revival sitcom One Day at a TimeAE reviewed the first season release is second season Friday, and it’s already queued up to binge on my TV tonight. last year, and from what I’ve seen, this set of episodes is just as delightful.

Isabella Gomez, who plays Elena, the teen who came out as gay to her family toward the end of season one, gave a glimpse in a recent interview of what we can expect from her character this season.

This season is all about: it doesn’t matter who you like it’s just who you like. We see the family trying to help her get a girlfriend. We see grandma giving her flirting tips and Alex making fun of her just like any other family would work.
Here are a few recent Instagram posts from Gomez to get you excited to dive in!

Sorry if you can hear my squealing over here, but Jessica Capshaw gave me a serious Twitter meltdown a few days ago when she tweeted this in response to Jesse Williams’ confirmation that he’s directing an episode this season:

Anyone else having heart palpitations over this? Nah? Just me? That’s fine. I’m fine. The Miseducation of Cameron Post is slaying at Sundance.

The Sundance film festival is coming to a close this weekend, and among the celebrated breakouts to look out for in 2018 are a couple of lesbian-lead films! Right before the festival began, AE gave a rundown of the lesbian and bi led or directed films to look forward to.

It looks like a big winner coming out of the festival is The Miseducation of Cameron Post! The film about a young girl who is sent to conversation camp after being caught with the prom queen is getting some serious buzz, so hopefully that means we’ll have some distribution news soon. We can’t wait to watch this one.

Here are some of the tweets we’ve seen this week from those at Sundance:

This film looks gorgeous and devastating and I can’t wait to sob into my Milk Duds when I get to watch it. Nomi spreads bi awareness in Grown-ish. Freeform never lets us down with it’s lesbian and bisexual representation, and its new series, Grown-ish is no exception. Nomi, one of the supporting characters of the show, is openly bisexual. Although Nomi isn’t always front and center in the series, she had a powerful standalone storyline in the most recent episodes, “Starboy” and “C.R.E.A.M.”

In “Starboy,” Nomi gets hit on by a guy while on a date with a woman. While Nomi corrects the guy and moves on, it leads to an uncomfortable discussion with her date when she seems to have a serious problem with the encounter. After Nomi reveals that she doesn’t mind being approached by guys since she’s bisexual, her date scoffs and instructs her to “call me when you’re done with this whole bi phase.”

As a bisexual woman who is married to a woman, I had so many feels over this scene and the series’ decision to approach and confront the very real issue that is biphobia. You might think Grown-ish stops there, but it doesn’t. In “C.R.E.A.M., we discover that the guy who hit on Nomi is bisexual too!

Not only that, but Nomi has some serious double standards when it comes to being bisexual herself, and dating a bisexual man. Bisexual issues often get buried on screen, so it’s incredibly refreshing to watch a string of episodes that addresses so many of the facets of discrimination bisexuals face. Thank you, Grown-ish. Halsey dropped the mic at the Women’s March over the weekend. Countless incredible moments happened last weekend during the second annual Women’s March that took over cities throughout the country, and the world. One of the most powerful speeches given was by our girl Halsey at the Washington D.C. event. There’s not really much else to say that can do justice to this video. Just grab your tissues and watch it.
