Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Les/Bi News Roundup

Happy December, babes! The end of 2017 is finally near, and it’s been a brutal one, am I right? Lez ride out these last couple weeks with an Instagram revolt, Princess Cyd, and a new bisexual character on a major television show!

At least we’re one week closer to a new season of Wayhaught goodness! A lesbian couple is fighting against the banning and removal of their family photo on Instagram. This is Veronica and her beautiful family. Veronica runs a lifestyle blog, where she gets intimate about the ins and outs of her relationship with her partner, Jana, and their parenting dynamics. She also chats with readers about fun things like cooking and home decor. Oh.MamiBlue also has an Instagram account where Veronica showcases photos of her family and projects. This account has gained an extra spike in traffic this week due to the report and removal of a stunning picture that features Veronica and her family cozying up in bed together. You can find the original photo here.

Upon the removal of the photo by Instagram, Veronica started a hashtag campaign on her IG stories, which was also banned. This second burst of homophobia has been followed up with a movement and hashtag where other members of the LGBTQ community are posting their own photos of happy moments with their partners. You can support this movement by posting your pictures and hashtagging #BorraIGdehomófobos, which means “delete Instagram homophobes.”

Princess Cyd is now available to watch On Demand! Princess Cyd is one of the most buzzed about indie lesbian films of 2017. In case you missed it back when we covered the trailer release, you can watch it below.

Princess Cyd follows a teen over the summer she spends with her aunt, and the two explore what it means to be a woman in every sense of the word, examining gender expression and sexual orientation across generations. I’ve got this one queued up and ready to watch with my wife this weekend, so what are you waiting for?

Is Cheryl joining the ranks of canonically queer characters on The CW?

Last week’s episode of Riverdale has fans wondering if the HBIC of Riverdale high is going to confirm her queerness sooner rather than later. This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten a glimpse of the possibility of Cheryl loving the ladies. Remember earlier this season when she and Tony Topaz (an out bisexual character on the show) shared that super hot look when they created the street race from Grease?

If you don’t think that’s hot as hell, I’m concerned about your eyeballs. I’ve been dying to see Cheryl get more screen time this season, and watching the reveal of her intense crush on Josie was disturbing, but oh so rewarding. Let’s just hope her story is treated with care, and she doesn’t go full-on queer single white female.

After the episode aired, Madelaine Petsch, who plays Cheryl Blossom, chatted with Entertainment Tonight about the potential romance. She said,

She needs love. She’s obviously still figuring herself out a little bit, but she’s discovered that she has no love, no home base, no friends, and this season her undercurrent is absolutely low. She’s really looking for love and she’s looking for it in all the right — and all the wrong — places.
You do you, Cheryl. Or you do Josie. Or Tony, I’m not picky. Australia finally gave a legal thumbs up to marriage equality.

The people of Australia were overwhelmingly in support of same-sex marriage when the numbers rolled in from the mail-in ballots a few weeks ago. But now, the government has spoken, and it’s official! The legislation passed in the Senate last week, but this past Thursday the country’s House of Representatives also approved of marriage equality, with only four votes in opposition. Thank you, Aussies! In other legal news, the Supreme Court hears same-sex cake baking case.

We all know the story. Jack Phillips, owner of the Colorado Masterpiece Cakeshop, refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. The state of Colorado decided that as a business owner, Phillips could not discriminate against the couple. So on this case has gone through the courts, with Phillips claiming freedom of speech and religion. As with so many of the Court’s decisions that have affecting the LGBT community, this decision appears to be coming down to Justice Kennedy, who seems split based on the questions he has asked both sides.

We’ll be anxiously awaiting the verdict of this important case that will undoubtedly affect every single member of our community. Shout out to Sweethaus Bakery in Charlottesville, VA for enthusiastically baking the wedding cake and cupcakes for my big day. You rock.

Kerry Washington and Rashida Jones are bringing the BOOM! Studios graphic novel series Goldie Vance to the silver screen. https://twitter.com/SimpsonStreet/status/936686697911382019

Simpson Street, the production company behind the HBO film Confirmation, tweeted out the above last weekend. The graphic novels feature teen detective Goldie Vance, who is a Black (lesbian or bi girl, which isn’t stated yet, but she falls for a girl) with an eye for crime.

Rashida Jones is slated to voice the title character, and we sure do hope the film decides to stay true to the gay roots of its character from the graphic series. If made into a family film franchise, Goldie Vance could become an icon for teen lesbian and bisexual girls around the world. Rosa Diaz came out as bisexual on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The critically acclaimed television series celebrated its 99th episode by giving viewers an iconic coming out scene with one of its main characters. The executive producer of the series, Dan Goor, recently told Variety that the storyline was inspired by the actress’s own personal experience coming out as bisexual.

Stephanie Beatrix, who plays Rosa Diaz, chimed in on her excitement of the plot progression of her character. She said to Variety:

I was so excited about it because as somebody who identifies as bi – queer – I just had nothing like that when I was growing up. The gay characters I can remember were most often stereotypes. Even a show like ‘Friends,’ you watch back, and you’re like, ‘Ooh, I can’t believe that’s the choice they made.’ And as someone who’s bi, you have absolutely nothing – no representation at all. And to be able to try to do something like that on our show and have a character come out as bi was really important for me.
Cue me adding all 99 episodes of Brooklyn 99 to my watch list immediately.

Last but not least, I leave you with the new politically charged music video Blondie just dropped with none other than Joan Jett. “Doom or Destiny” is about just what the title sounds like, a discussion of whether our country is doomed or if we are just fulfilling our own destiny. It’s edgy as hell, and full of some killer split screen shots of the two icons.

That’s all I have for you today, my lady loves! I hope all of you are staying safe with the horrific fires that are consuming parts of California. We’re hunkering down here at AfterEllen.

Have a fabulously fierce weekend!
