AfterEllen succesfully raised their goal of $1,000 towards hurricane relief last Thursday! The proceeds will be donated to the local organizations Sea Shepard and The Montrose Center who have been helping those afflicted by hurricanes Irma and Harvey get access to water, food, shelter, and general rehabilitation.
The benefit bash was held at the weekly lesbian night hosted by Queertainment on Thursdays at Revolver Bar in West Hollywood, California. The venue was packed wall to wall with friendly faces while AfterEllen held interviews with the talent backstage.
In attendance were special celebrity guests such as Rain Dove, Liz Baxter, and April Roth. A surprise guest, Ashley Obinwanne of Lesbians Over Everything, arrived unannounced to show her support.
Stephanie Frosch of ElloSteph and Sarah Croce of Calling in Drunk hosted the shindig announcing talent and thanking attendees for donating towards the fundraiser.
Performances by Abisha Uhl of the former band Sick of Sarah, pop-music duo Bria & Chrissy, and comedy duo Carlie and Doni of Revry TV’s Your Mom Says Hi! entertained the crowd. In between live performances local Los Angeles DJs Lily Khuu and Kara Ford kept people dancing.
Stephanie Frosch of ElloSteph opened up about how AfterEllen helped her during her coming out process, “I’ve been reading AfterEllen for years and years and years since back when I was a baby gay and it means a lot to be here.”
Sarah Croce shared the reason why she decided to host the event. “There are a lot of parties in the LGBT community that don’t benefit anyone. This is for a noble cause and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Rain Dove talked about the experience of being at the AfterEllen celebration, “It’s interesting. I was told this was going to be a club environment, but it feels more like a family environment. It seems like everyone kind of knows each other and it feels very safe.”
Put on the spot, entertainment reporter Lily Khuu asked the editor in chief of AfterEllen what her goal was with the site:
“My goal is for AfterEllen to stay alive because it is important that lesbians, bisexual women, and however else one identifies to have a voice in this world and be heard in the media.”
The fundraising benefit was produced by the LGBT party production group Queertainment who hosts public lesbian dance parties weekly in West Hollywood. You can follow them and find out where their next event will be hosted by visiting their website HERE.
