Lez Dish It Out! The AfterEllen Weekly Round-Up

Photo: Instagram, Harper’s Bazaar, Twitter

Greetings, LDIO readers! I can’t believe the next installment of LDIO will bring us to September. Where has the summer gone? Besides The L Word reboot news, it has been a relatively quiet past few months… maybe the energy of Monday’s solar eclipse will shake things up and we’ll have a more action-packed fall. Speaking of, I hope noone pulled a Donald Trump and looked directly at the solar eclipse – it’s hard to catch up on lady lovin’ news with burnt eyeballs.

This week in lez news, Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell fell victim to a hacker, Cara Delevingne and St. Vincent collaborated on an album, and Sarah Paulson locked lips with Allison Pill in the AHS: Cult trailer.

Gross with an extra side of GROSS.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that nude photos of Kristen were leaked by a hacker. Another unfortunate layer of this case? Some of the very intimate and private photos featured the actress’ girlfriend, Stella. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like to have your most private photos shared on the internet for the world to see.

In addition to hacking Kristen, the perps also leaked nude photos of Miley Cyrus, Tiger Woods, Lindsey Vonn, and Katherine McPhee. Maxwell also appeared in Cyrus’ private photos- remember when they dated?

As for what the couple is doing about the leak, TMZ reports they’ve lawyered up. Honestly, I don’t know how much good that will do… this breach of privacy has occurred many times over the past few years, and celebrities haven’t had much success getting their private photos removed.

I’ll keep you guys posted as this case develops. Allison Pill Gives Sarah Paulson A Kiss In The AHS: Cult Trailer Photo: Fx Networks/YouTube

I’m so excited for this lesbian storyline.

On Tuesday, the trailer for AHS: Cult dropped and it did not disappoint. As I mentioned last week, Pill and Sarah play wives in this politically charged installment of the series, and the trailer treated fans to a few glimpses of their on-screen dynamic. By the looks of it, Ms. Paulson’s character is devastated by Donald Trump’s presidential win, and her trauma somehow involves killer clowns (because why not?). As for Pill, her character is more calm and skeptical, so it’s safe to say the pair’s relationship will be tested.

Check it out below:

Minus the sadistic clowns, this hits pretty close to home. Ryan Murphy might as well have enlisted a camera crew to follow me (or any lesbian in America) around for a few months.

AHS: Cult will premiere on Sept. 5.

Bex Taylor-Klaus To Star In Dumplin Photo: Bex Taylor-Klaus/Instagram

How amazing for Bex!

As you might already know, I’ve been a big fan ever since the lesbian starred in The Killing. Now that Klaus’ star is on the rise, she earned a role in Dumplin, a movie based on a YA novel of the same name. The plot follows an overweight yet confident teenager named Willowdean who enters a beauty pageant to infuriate her critical beauty queen mom (Jennifer Aniston). I suspect Bex will play one of Willowdean’s friends who also join the pageant.

The movie is currently filming in Georgia, so it probably won’t come out until late next year. Luke Benward, Maddie Baillio, and Ginger Minj will also appear in the film. Cara Delevingne Lends Her Voice To St. Vincent’s New Album Photo: Cara Delevingne/St. Vincent/Instagram

Talk about a plot twist.

According to The New Yorker, Cara lent her vocals to St. Vincent’s new album. Under the alias Kid Monkey (I’ll get to that nonsense later), Delevingne sang the chorus of “Pills,” a song referencing St. Vincent’s earlier struggles with depression and anxiety. The bisexual model reportedly sings: “Pills to grow, pills to shrink, pills, pills, pills and a good stiff drink/pills to fuck, pills to eat, pills, pills, pills down the kitchen sink.”

As for Kid Monkey, the musician revealed Cara supposedly chose the name to throw off the British tabloids. Hmm, doesn’t a random and cheeky pseudonym seek out more attention? If Kid Monkey had decided to go with her real name, I doubt there would have been as much fanfare as there is now.

That being said, will the album feature songs about the exes’ relationship? Here’s St. Vincent’s cagey answer:

I’ve always kept my writing close to the vest. And by that I mean I’m always gonna write about my life. Sometimes, in the past, I did that way more obliquely than now. But it’s almost like an involuntary reflex. I can’t help but be living and also taking notes on what’s going on, always trying to figure out how to put that into a song. And that does not mean there’s literal truth in every lyric on the way. Of course not. But I can only write about my life, and that-dating Cara-was a big part of my life. I wouldn’t take it off-limits, just because my songs might get extra scrutiny. People would read into them what they would, and you know what? Whatever they thought they found there would be absolutely right. And at the same time it would be absolutely wrong.”
Eh, whatever.

P.S. It turns out “New York” is not about Cara like some fans had suspected.

Samira Wiley Crafts A Political Playlist For Billboard Photo: Samira Wiley/Instagram

If you’re looking for an outlet to express your political/feminist angst, Samira’s post-election playlist for Billboard might be up your alley. In the article, the lesbian picked three songs: one to represent her Handmaid’s Tale character, one for political empowerment, and another by a female musician she admires.

From Billboard:

What is a song that represents your Handmaid’s Tale character?

“No Problem” by Lil Scrappy. This song represents Moira to her core. It’s all about how she’ll literally fuck someone up if they come to her with bullshit. Samira is sorry for the cursing! Moira is not.

What is a song that empowers you in this political climate?

“Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. I love this song because the answer to life’s question is made completely simple. I feel the message is be the change that you would like to see in the world. And that for me feels attainable.

Who is a female musician you admire and what song of hers do you find most empowering?

“Brave” by Sara Bareilles. Love Sara Bareilles! So many of her songs are empowering and inspirational, but I do think this song, in particular, in the political climate that we are living in, is especially relevant.

What do you guys think? NFL Hires Its First Openly Gay Coach

History has been made.

On Tuesday, the NFL announced it had hired Katie to be the assistant-coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Sowers, an out lesbian, will be the first openly gay coach in the NFL. Even better yet, the athlete will be the second female full-time coach in NFL history.

The 31-year-old told OutSports:

No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are. There are so many people who identify as LGBT in the NFL, as in any business, that do not feel comfortable being public about their sexual orientation. The more we can create an environment that welcomes all types of people, no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, the more we can help ease the pain and burden that many carry every day.”
Well said. I don’t follow football, but I’m thrilled that the NFL is taking a step forward in the right direction.

Xena: Warrior Princess Won’t Get A Lesbian Reboot Gif: Giphy

Boo.

On Wednesday, NBC announced that it will not go forward with a lesbian reboot of Xena: Warrior Princess. Jennifer Salke, the president of NBC Entertainment explained, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot. I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title, but the current incarnation of it is dead”
If you’ve been following the Xena saga, this announcement shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach left the project a few months ago over creative differences (it’s rumored NBC wasn’t on board with the lesbian angle), and things appeared to come to a halt following his departure.

Although Salke entertained the possibility of a revival down the line, the prospects of it actually happening are slim to none. I guess we can’t win them all. Kate McKinnon’s The Magic School Bus Rides Again Gets A Premiere Date Photo: The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon/YouTube

Thank you, Netflix.

On Sept. 29, Netflix will air The Magic School Bus Rides Again: Season 1. As I mentioned previously, McKinnon will voice the beloved character of Ms. Frizzle.

Naturally, people are excited about the lesbian treasure’s new role:

Will anyone be watching for nostalgia’s sake?

Ellen Page Talks To Deadline About Gaycation & The Current State Of American Politics Photo: Ellen Page/Instagram

Props to Page for continuing to do such important work.

Earlier this week, the lesbian spoke to Deadline on everything Gaycation and she also touched on the recent troubling events in America.

On the inception of Gaycation: “In a logistical sense, it came to be because [Vice Media creative director] Spike [Jonze] is a good friend of mine. He mentioned that they were starting a network and asked if we had any ideas. There have been many moments in my life, continuing through a society that oppresses LGBT people-whether traveling, or needless to say, in my day to day life, or growing up in a place like Nova Scotia-so it just seemed like an interesting way to use the format of the “travel show,” investigating this reality that people live through and comparing it to the situation in America.”

On tackling the tragedy in Orlando: “We were hesitant about, what does it mean to be another media force there? Of course, when you get there, and you see all that in person for the first time, you realize how difficult that must be for people who are attempting immediately after to do what they can to stabilize themselves, having to deal with such horrific trauma. I think we’re reflecting on why we make the show, which is to offer more visibility. We’re privileged to have this platform and want to share the stories of those who don’t usually get to share their story. The fact that a massacre like this could happen, and the lack of conversation about LGBT-plus people was so hard, and not even surprising, I guess, sadly.”

On talking to dangerous people on Gaycation: “I think often, when you are able to have the conversation in that place, much more can be revealed, if that makes sense, that can be oddly more penetrating to the viewer-when you do see someone that calm express things that are so hard for us to imagine, and then attempt to dig through the layers, as much as you can, sitting with someone for an hour or two, to try and get a greater understanding of where that foundation is from. Looking at what’s just happened-not only the past few days, but in the history of the United States and Canada-I grew up in a place that has a horrible history, in terms of race…I think that enables the conversation to reach people more. I think we’re able to stay calm because the reality is, we are privileged in that situation-we’re surrounded by our team, there’s cameras, we have security, and I think you’re reflecting more on individuals’ day-to-day life. They don’t have that protection, in a place like Ukraine-just walking down the street as a visibly queer person, you’re taking a serious risk.”

On another note, Ellen shared another coupley photo with her new GF Emma Portner… and it might have the best caption ever:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BX_9K17hEnE/?hl=en&taken-by=ellenpage Activist Amita Swadhin Photo: Amita Swadhin/Instagram

Ms. Swadhin is doing incredible work for LGBTQ people of color who’ve survived sexual abuse as a child.

Amita, a queer activist, is currently working on Mirror Memoirs, a crucial “oral history project centering the narratives, healing and leadership of LGBTQ survivors of color in the movement to end child sexual abuse.” 30 participants of Mirror Memoirs recently convened at a national summit in California, and they met to “share stories, build community, and strategize about how to organize using their struggles and resilience as a starting point.” It’s an incredible project, especially when you consider LGBTQ people are statistically more susceptible to sexual violence.

If Swadhin’s name sounds familiar to you, that’s because I wrote about her testimony against Jeff Sessions for LDIO back in January.

P.S. If you’re interested in sharing your story with Mirror Memoirs, click here.

I’m out! See you guys next week.
