Holby City recap (19.21, 19.22, and 19.23): The Price We Pay, Other People’s Dreams, and The Hangover

Last time on Holby City: Since losing her daughter, Ellie, at New Year’s, Serena has been behaving coldly to Jasmine, the junior doctor who she blames for her daughter’s death. Although, in all fairness, Jasmine couldn’t do much to prevent Ellie’s death. Serena did, however, make up with Bernie on Valentine’s Day.

The Price We Pay

When we open, Serena (Catherine Russell) is in her first actual therapy session and she’s actually talking about her feelings- Bernie must be so proud! But if you’d expect that her therapy session will have a calming effect on Serena, you’d be wrong.

Serena: “I’m glad I’ve come for counselling at last, but I’m not in denial.”

Serena still appears to be taking out her anger on Jasmine (Lucinda Dryzek), though, refusing to call on her during rounds. Serena points to Jasmine after Morven (Eleanor Fanyinka) has done the initial assessment and amps up the pressure; telling Jasmine to hurry up before snapping at her that the patient is now dead.

Luckily, the team is just completing an assessment on a mannequin; rather than a real-life patient. Jasmine tries to explain that she gets nervous before exams but that doesn’t stop Serena screaming at her.

Serena: “Consider this a final warning. Get out.”

Hanssen (Guy Henry) has taken to monitoring the wards and Serena takes the opportunity to slag off Jasmine to him. It is then that he reveals to Serena that he is on the ward investigating claims of bullying surrounding Serena and Jasmine.

Uh oh, Serena.

She finds Bernie (Jemma Redgrave) to talk about the bullying claims but Bernie brushes her off and makes excuses to leave — did Bernie report Serena?

Bernie: “I’d heard murmurs of discontent.”

Serena attempts to make it right with Jasmine, which appears to confuse the poor junior doctor; then Bernie approaches to ask Jasmine to keep any further complaints more discrete.

Jasmine-totally confused about the whole issue talks to Hanssen and reveals that she never complained about Serena, despite becoming flustered when he questions her further.

So, if Jasmine didn’t make the complaint and Bernie didn’t either, then who has raised the issue?

Later, in theatre, Hanssen is watching from outside when Serena challenges Jasmine to let the adrenaline kick in and assist in the surgery. Still, she snaps at Jasmine when she doesn’t respond quickly enough and blames the junior doctor for not handing her the right equipment.

Then Hanssen steps in to tell Serena that she needs to kinder to the juniors and that she is making Jasmine ill. He excuses Jasmine from the surgery.

Later, when Jasmine comes to apologize to Serena (for being lied to by a patient, I presume), Serena screams at their loud enough to attract the attention of Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) and Morven at the nurses’ station and Bernie at the other end of the hall.

She grabs hold of Jasmine’s face before screaming at her she wished Ellie was still there instead of Jasmine.

Serena: “Why, why, why are you still here? And she’s not!”

Bernie calls to her, asking her to release Jasmine, but Serena draws Jasmine into a hug and cries on her shoulder.

Hanssen decides not to remove Serena from her duties, instead preferring to monitor the situation; he reveals that Jasmine never made any complaint, in fact, she was the one who pled with Hanssen for mercy on Serena. He notes that Jac (Rosie Marcel) had caught Jasmine crying and raised the issue with him.

Serena catches up with Jasmine in the parking lot, later and apologizes to Jasmine. Jasmine accepts the apology without question, even asking Serena to remain as her mentor.

Other People’s Dreams

This episode opens on Serena and Jasmine in a mock surgery, which Jasmine aces and it looks like Serena may have moved on from where we left her last week. She even asks Jasmine to scrub in on an important, exclusive surgery later in the week (I’d tell you the name but honestly, it’s far too long).

Serena: “Go home and rest.”

Jasmine refuses to go home and sleep, despite doing 16 hour days for the past 4 days. Later, she misdiagnoses a patient and very nearly gives him an overdose.

Bernie: “Any distention in the right iliac fossa?”

Jasmine: “No, I didn’t feel any.”

Bernie: [After checking] “Well, I’d say there is.”

Morven tells her to go home and sleep, but Jasmine changes the subject to Morven’s love life; she’s been talking to a guy called Nate online but Morven reveals that Nate never wants to meet up in real life.

Still, Jasmine must know that Morven is right, so she goes to ask Serena for time off but finds out that the op has been moved forward to this afternoon. Serena asks if Jasmine still wants to go ahead and after Jasmine agrees, Serena gives her Ellie’s Head Girl Pin.

Serena: “I’d like you to have it.”

So, what does Jasmine do? Take some caffeine pills of course. Oh no, this is going to end just like that episode of Saved by the Bell, isn’t it?

Then Jac, who is trying to get Oliver (James Anderson) and Matteo (Christian Vit), in on her op, tries to convince Jasmine to drop out of the surgery. She snaps that Jasmine is being set up to fail and reminds her that Serena may not have faith in her.

Jasmine: “Maybe she believes in me.”

Jac: “A week ago, she believed that your negligence killed her daughter.”

Jasmine refuses to recuse herself but on her way back to the ward, she collapses in the corridor and is rescued by a patient’s brother who agrees to keep quiet.

During a different operation, Bernie admits that she is worried that about the relationship between Jasmine and Serena. She worries that Jasmine might is looking for a mother-figure in Serena and that Serena may be seeing a replacement for Ellie in Jasmine.

Jasmine: “I don’t mean to mean to be rude, Ms Wolfe but the idea that Ms Campbell sees me as some kind of daughter figure is ridiculous.”

Bernie: “How about the idea that you see her as some sort of mother figure?”

Thankfully, Jasmine makes the right decision and bows out of the big op, which Serena accepts with grace.

At the end of the episode when Morven tries to ask Nate to meet up, it is revealed to the audience, that Jasmine has been texting her, pretending to be Nate, but why?

Is she trying to make her roommate feel better? Is she trying to flirt with her? Is she in love?

The Hangover

Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long for our answer; Jasmine reveals to Fletch that she is Nate after a drunken message about a mango leads him to joke about her stealing Morven’s man.

Jasmine wanted to make Morven feel better because her friend wasn’t having any luck on the dating scene but this backfires when Morven admits to a patient that she has got a boyfriend.

Fletch: “You’re one step away from double-dating Bernie and Serena.”

Well, this could be an interesting turn of events for us all… except for the fact that neither Morven or Jasmine is attracted to women…we can always dream.

However, Morven soon realizes that Jasmine is pretending to be Nate and she is furious with her friend. She calls her out on it at the end of their shift and tells Jasmine to move out.

Unfortunately, Bernie and Serena aren’t featured heavily in this episode but the Jasmine/Morven ‘love story’ needed clearing up.
