TV Shows on Our Recap Radar in 2017

The Afterellen staff is thrilled to see that there will be at least a few good shows with lesbian and bisexual female characters and storylines this year. It’s still early to report on what will actually be worth watching, and whether we will have to face another brutal year of shows burying their gays, but we are hopeful. Thanks to you, readers, we heard about and will continue to recap the British series Holby City, because we adore Berena! Here are a few other shows on our radar this winter TV season.

First and foremost, though it doesn’t air until April – The Handmaid’s Tale. What could possibly be better than a dystopian drama based on a Margaret Atwood novel that stars OITNB’s Samira Wiley? We can’t think of anything.

Supergirl – Well, obviously. Of course we will recap Supergirl, as long as Sanvers lives and breathes.

Jane the Virgin – Because of Elisabeth Rohm, who we’ve been told is returning to season 3 and will be shipped with Luisa (Yara Martinez).

Grey’s Anatomy – Shonda Rhimes, you haven’t let us down so far. We can’t wait to see what’s in store in the lady love department for Arizona! This one is a definite on our recap to-do list.

The Fosters – Ah, Stef and Lena. One of our favorite lesbian couples EVER. Why would we not recap this show? We aren’t heartless, and these two stole our hearts and made us wish we could join their big, welcoming open-armed family from episode one.

The Good Fight – Coming to CBS next month. In this political drama, Rose Leslie’s lead character Maia will be a lesbian with a girlfriend and be a regular on the show. Time will tell, of course, but it sounds promising.

Etonline

Pretty Little Liars – Just all kinds of ship speculations to fantasize about with this one. But are we really ready for a final season? At any rate, recaps to come.

Wynonna Earp – We got so eager for #WayHaught to return that we ended up stalking the cast, which you can catch up on in this article.

When We Rise – We just heard about this new series son ABC All Access, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Rachel Griffiths, Mary Louise Parker,Ivory Aquino and Rosie O’Donnell, among others. From HBO: “When We Rise” is written and created by Academy Award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. This mini-series event chronicles the real-life personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.”

Last but not least, over on Netflix we are currently binge-watching One Day at a Time, which portrays a teenage lesbian whose relationship with her mother is melting our hearts. We’ll have a full review and recap for you on that next week!
