Tina Fey and Amy Poehler make news again

In the midst of mourning the loss of a weekly hour with Sara Shahi on Life, two bright and smiling faces emerged from the darkness and inspired a poem.

Who can chase the blues away?

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey!

(Hey, I’m a blogger, not the poet laureate.)

NBC announced yesterday that its half-hour Weekend Update will be a part of the Thursday night schedule next fall. And the network intends to invite Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to man, er, woman the news desk on a semi-regular basis.

The network’s thinking is that having the couple (yes, in my mind they are a couple) appear on Weekend Update will help promote the stars’ Thursday night comedies, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation.

Fey’s 30 Rock has won Emmy after Emmy and is a favorite of critics and lesbians everywhere, but the show still hasn’t captured the kind of wide audience enjoyed by NBC Thursday night shows like Rock’s predecessors, Friends and Will & Grace. I’m not sure why; Tina Fey is one of the best comedy writers in the business and Liz Lemon is one of the most lovable characters on TV.

Parks and Recreation, which had an abbreviated season this spring, returns for a full season, but needs serious support to survive. Poehler is winsome as the awkward Leslie Knope and has a great supporting cast that includes Rashida Jones, but Parks just doesn’t quite work. I want to love this show; hopefully a full season of episodes will give the writers a chance to turn it into something special.

I’m not sure how popular Weekend Update will be without an election to fuel the funny, but I’ll take Tina and Amy however, whenever and wherever I can get them. Who’s with me?
