“Wentworth” recap (4.5): Kween Bea and Allie Cat

on

Bea, hearing praise from someone with nothing to gain from it, cautiously opens up the line of communication from the other side of the wall. And then the floodgates come open, and the two of them talk all night, with the desperate intensity of high school best friends (the kind you were obsessed with before you quite understood why). They laugh. They talk about Debbie. They fucking freestyle rap!

wentworth6.11YO I’M RED’S RIGHT HAND SO DON’T FUCK WITH ME/CAUSE I LICK LIKE AN ALLIE CAT AND STING LIKE A BEA.

wentworth6.12THIS IS REALLY GOOD, AND WE NEED TO BE WRITING THIS DOWN. I AM SO SERIOUS.

Partly because the physical component is taken out of the situation, Bea allows herself to open up in a way we’ve never seen before. I mean, she trusts Maxine and cares for Doreen and appreciates Liz, but Allie may be the first character in history to make Bea laugh. And we finally learn just what has Allie tied so tight to Kaz: she was kicked out of her home when her parents found out she was working as a hooker and living as a lesbian. Kaz took care of her at the women’s shelter and got her off drugs. She says, point blank, that she loves Kaz and owes her her life. (And as ecstatic as I am at this whole scene, something tells me those divided loyalties are going to cut Allie’s life a little short. I’m just saying we should be prepared.)

The whole idea of Bea developing this kind of connection with another woman could easily have felt like a bone thrown to queer audiences to keep up happy while Frankie was elsewhere. But this is moving in a way unlike television relationship between women I have ever seen. Every single member of this cast is firing on all cylinders this season, and this is just the latest case Wentworth has made to call itself the greatest show on Earth. (Will you please give me a goddamn interview now?)

And the next day, when Allie is taken for her psych visit, they exchange a look straight out of Imagine Me & You.
