Morning Brew – Sarah Paulson on coming out and speaking her truth

Good morning!

This Hollywood Reporter showrunner roundtable is worth reading, especially since there are two out women among the rest: Nina Jacobson and Nahnatchka Khan. Here’s a quote from Nahnatchka:

“If I waited to write only for a Persian lesbian, I’d still be waiting. But I can write for straight white men because those are the jobs. If you want to be a writer, you have to learn to write in other people’s voices until you get the chance to write in your own. What’s so exciting to me [about the diverse ABC comedies] is that now we get to flip the switch and tell stories that maybe you’ve seen before through a different lens.”

Kudos to BuzzFeed for having two leading Asian women in this video about talking to talk to your crush while introverted.

And for a same-sex couple in this video about being in labor.

The Windy City Times profiles out artist Riva Lehrer and her new work, “The Risk Pictures” at Printworks Gallery in Chicago, opening May 20th.

Also from the WCT, out playwright Sharon Bridgforth will receive $275,000 as one of six recipients of the fifth annual Doris Duke Artist Awards.

KALW details the history of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band.

At SheKnows: My child’s a lesbian, and she has every right to go to church.

Out artist Christian O includes some same-sex couples in his video for “Better Than You.”

Sarah Paulson talked with NoTofu about her unplanned coming out in 2005, when she kissed then partner Cherry Jones as she went up to accept her Tony:

“She won a Tony Award, I kissed her, and all of a sudden I was outed. I didn’t really think about it in that way at the time — I was just doing what one would do when a person they love has just won a big fat acting prize. What am I gonna do, pat her on the back and say ‘good job, dude?’ It didn’t occur to me to do anything but what I did.”

She admits she was worried about how it would affect her career; at the time, she had just signed on to star in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip:

“I had anxiety. I was worried somehow that there was going to be some fallout if Aaron [Sorkin] or anyone on the show knew that I was with Cherry. [But] on my very first day, when we met to do the table read for Studio 60, Aaron walked right up to me and says, ‘I didn’t know you were with Cherry Jones, that’s so wonderful. I just want you to know that you’re safe here. You never have anything to worry about. You’re safe here.’ It was the biggest exhale of my life. I didn’t realise how anxious about it I had been until he said that.”

And as for her relationship with Holland Taylor:

“I believe that everyone should be allowed to speak their truth and just say what they want to say and show the world who they are. You should be able to love whomever you fucking well please.”
