“The 100” recap (3.01): Grounder Pounder

Trader Girl has some questions for Clarke—small-talk stuff mostly, about how many people she’s killed, etc, typical third date stuff—and Clarke asks her to stop talking. The girl looks sad, but Clarke calls her by her name, Niylah, and says she didn’t mean stop talking and go away. She meant stop talking and start kissing. (Well actually she doesn’t say anything out loud, she said all that with her eyes. She just LOOKS at her and then KISSES HER FACE.)

I MEAN.

Okay, listen: Screenshots won’t suffice here because CLARKE’S TONGUE.

AND THEN SHE PUSHES HER BACKWARDS.

AND THERE’S KISSING AND GRABBING

AND THEN CLARKE TAKES OFF HER SHIRT. THEN THERE’S MORE KISSING. THEN NIYLAH TAKES OFF HER SHIRT.

They roll around a little more and then they totally do it. Clarke thought she was a top but she’s no match for a Grounder Girl.

And you guys, it is steamy. I’d venture to say the steamiest scene the show has had so far. Obviously not as supercharged with emotion as the Clexa kiss, but raw and sexy. And the MUSIC. Plus, from the look on her face, it’s exactly what Clarke needed. For the first time in a long time she’s safe, she’s cared for, and she’s feeling things other than overwhelming guilt.

And that’s why she’s out there, right? All alone? Because she feels so much guilt about what she’s had to do. At the time she truly believed she was doing the right thing, and maybe even now she knows she wouldn’t have made a different choice, but she still killed so many people, and lead other people to kill so many people. And she’s just this human girl who took on a leadership role when she thought it was keeping 97 other teenagers alive, but was too honorable to step down when she realized how much more complicated the role would be. Her heart was already in it. She’s someone who had to act cold and hard and order the death of dozens of people on multiple occasions as if each life wouldn’t weigh heavy on her heart for the rest of her life. So now she’s out in the woods, where she won’t be able to see Octavia, who she almost let die by missile; or Raven, whose ex-boyfriend she stabbed to spare him death by a hundred cuts; Jasper, who had to hold his girlfriend in his arms while her face melted off; parents whose children didn’t survive under her watch; Grounders who lost so many of their own fighting her battles. So she’s out here to forget, but she’s Clarke, so surely she’s been hiding in trees and beating herself up simultaneously. But for now, for one sweet night, she has release.
