“Big Love” Season 3: More lies, secrets and wives

Last Sunday, while we were watching the decline and fall of The L Word, Big Love came back for its third season on HBO. I finally had a chance to watch the episode and it might be the best one yet.

Even though we haven’t seen the Hendricksons for more than a year, the story picks up not long after the last season ended.

Nicki (ChloĆ« Sevigny) is headed for her first day at work, complaining that she has to wear “immodest” clothes (as compared to her usual floor-length cotton dresses).

Oops. How did that get here?

Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) is off to run errands, just like any other day.

Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a happy new mama again, having given birth to Baby Nell.

Bill (Bill Paxton) is being Bill.

Of course, as we might suspect from a family of closeted polygamists, appearances are deceiving.

Nicki’s job at the courthouse is part of a scheme by her mother Adaleen (Mary Kay Place) to find out who is testifying against Roman in his trial.

Margie is coming up with new ways to convince her new BFF Ana to become her own true sister wife. (You can keep track of the coming season through Margie’s eyes on her blog.)

Barb is on her way to the doctor for tests to confirm her fear that her cancer has recurred.

Bill is being Bill. OK, sometimes things are exactly as they seem.

I don’t want to spoil anything because the best parts of the episode were when Big Love‘s characters surprised us, each doing something totally unexpected in light of what we know about them.

Is Big Love still on your DVR? What did you think of the season premier? Any predictions for the season?
