“Jane the Virgin” recap (1.18): Banish Your Doubts

The flashback takes us back to Easter, the Villanuevas’ favorite time of year. A young Jane has her doubts that Jesus actually resurrected from the dead. She confides in Abuela but Abuela convinces Jane that you have to “banish your doubts,” and to have faith.

These days Jane’s doubts are mainly about her relationship with Rafael. He is still heavily involved in his work. During child birth class, Rafael gets a work related phone call. He steps out in the middle of class, leaving Jane to finish the class alone.

Jane didn’t want to talk to Xiomara about her doubts with Rafael so she turns to Andie for advice. When Jane was with Michael, they wanted the same things. She’s beginning to realize that she and Rafael don’t really want the same things. Andie advises Jane not to do anything rash, that it’s probably hormones.

Rogelio’s mom, Liliana, is in town. Rogelio has some demands for his mother’s arrival: iron silk sheets, remove all red items from the kitchen, and lovingly display photos of her around the house. The reason Liliana dislikes Xiomara is because she walked in on them in the middle of getting it on. Liliana was shocked, knocked over a lamp which in turn electrocuted her cat and she’s never forgiven Xiomara for it.

A customer at the hotel is rude to Jane and threatens to have her fired. “I’d like to see you try,” Jane says and walks away. Come to find out, that rude customer is Alexis Falco, the city commissioner. The same city commissioner whom Rafael is to have dinner with that very night to discuss getting back the Marbella’s liquor license. Upon learning that Jane is Rafael’s girlfriend, Alexis Falco decides that she isn’t up for dinner anymore.

Graham, Alexis’s husband, invites Rafael and Jane to spend Easter with them in order to smooth things over with Alexis. Jane is heartbroken that she won’t be with her family, but she does the right thing and goes with Rafael.

Petra is still convinced that Aaron Zazo is really Roman Zazo. She goes into Aaron’s room to further investigate. She grabs a glass that Aaron has used and calls Michael to help her investigate.

Michael arrives at the hotel to find Jane waiting on Rafael. Jane notices that he’s wearing his “date” sweater. He tells her that he has a date with his ex, Andie. Jane puts two and two together and tries to tell Michael about Andie, but Rafael pops up and they’re off to church.

Petra meets with Michael in her office. He takes the glass with him to run prints to see whether or not they match the prints the police have on Roman. Petra is meeting with Aaron for dinner that night, but she’s afraid.

Edward, Abuela’s crush from rehabilitation class, is the priest at the church Rafael and Jane attend with the Falcos. It all makes sense why Edward hasn’t been accepting any of the passes Abuela has been making at him.

Xiomara apologizes to Liliana for what happened to her cat years ago. Liliana forgives her for that, but says she can’t forgive Xiomara for never telling Rogelio about Jane. The truth is, she did tell Rogelio. He never told his own mother. And, he still doesn’t want Liliana to know the truth, leaving the blame on Xiomara.

After church, Rogelio comes clean to Liliana. He confesses that Xiomara did tell him about Jane, but that he advised her to get an abortion. He never told Liliana because he didn’t want her to be ashamed of him. But it’s too late for that. Later, Liliana apologizes to Xiomara. She then demands that Xiomara and Rogelio end their relationship. She says that they are not right for each other, because Rogelio wants more children. “Maybe you’re a little too old,” she tells Xiomara in regards to having more children.

Alexis invites Jane to sit with her and her friends at brunch. Alexis grew more annoyed with Jane because Jane charmed all of Alexis’s friends, the opposite of what she expected to happen. Jane made sure to do her homework on each of the women the night before the brunch. While coming out of the restroom, Jane overhears Graham and Alexis having an argument over his mistress. Alexis agrees to help out Rafael for Jane’s silence on the matter.

Rafael gets an email from the private investigator that they have an email of his mother, Elena. He writes an email to her but doesn’t get a response. Later that night, Elena unexpectedly shows up.

Mother and son sit and talk. She gives Rafael a letter that his father wrote her when Rafael was eighteen and the address on the letter shows that she lives only three hours away. In the letter his father said great things about Rafael. When asked why she left, Elena admits to cheating on Rafael’s father. In turn, his father offered her ten million dollars to leave and never contact them. So, she did. Elena eventually remarried and had another son, Rafael’s half-brother. It’s only a matter of time before we meet this half-brother.

Xiomara goes back home to find Rogelio alone. He sent Liliana on a flight back home. He finally tells Xiomara that he loves her.

Michael is back at the hotel waiting on a phone call with the results of Aaron’s fingerprints. Petra and Aaron get into the elevator together to go to dinner. Aaron pushes the ground floor button and says “there’s a change in plans.” Michael calls Petra but her phone doesn’t have service in the underground garage. Petra was right, Aaron is Roman Zazo.

Jane finds Rafael sad and drinking. He tells her that maybe they are way too different. Maybe they should just stop trying to force their relationship and that they should just focus on being good parents. Rafael says they should take a break. “You want to break up?” Jane asks. “If that’s what you want to call it,” he responds. Jane leaves and breaks down outside his door.
