Rose Byrne and Halston Sage could win Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards

This Sunday is the MTV Movie Awards, and I’m super excited to cover the red carpet for AfterEllen. But what’s even more exciting is that Rose Byrne could take home a win for Best Kiss with her female Neighbors co-star Halston Sage.

The MTV Movie Awards has a history of including same-sex smooches in the 23 years of voting in the Best Kiss category, as Slate shows in this video.

The first few same-sex female nominees were Bound (1997), Chasing Amy (1998), Wild Things (1999) and Cruel Intentions (2000), who was the first to take home the win, beating out Boys Don’t Cry. In 2002, Mia Kirshner was up for her humorous (and saliva-filled) lip-lock with Beverly Polcyn in Not Another Teen Movie, and Elektra‘s hot kiss between Jennifer Garner and Natassia Malthe got a nod in 2005. Kristen Stewart won over her own Runaways moment with Dakota Fanning with her Twilight romance scene in 2010, and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were robbed for Black Swan (2011). Last year, the Spring Breakers threeway between Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco was up against Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams’s bathroom bonding in American Hustle, but both lost to Emma Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poulter in We Are the Millers.

So if Rose and Halston do take home the win for Neighbors, they will be the second female/female pairing to win Best Kiss that doesn’t include a dude as a part of it. (Although there are guys standing right there watching, and this movie has MALE GAZE written all over it.) You can still vote, and this is really the only lesbianish nomination this year. But with Amy Schumer hosting and Shailene Woodley being honored as a trailblazer, there should be a lot of estrogen-filled energy at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, especially with the Pitch Perfect 2 cast on hand.

Tune in on Sunday night 8/7c and stay tuned for our red carpet coverage next week.
