Morning Brew – Helen Mirren says her iconic “Prime Suspect” character is gay

Good morning!

Listen, I don’t want to brag but this weekend, I was at Simply Divine, a food and wine event put on by the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, when I turned around and looked right into the face of Diana Nyad. So what do you do when that happens? You gasp and then whisper, “Diana Nyad!” She was sweet enough to pose for a photo with me after I was such a nerd, but YOU GUYS SHE IS A HUGE INSPIRATION! And I wasn’t expecting her to be standing next to me.

Elisha Cuthbert was a guest on New York Live where she talked about One Big Happy.

Angelina Jolie won favorite villain at this weekend’s Kids Choice Awards and gave a great speech on how being different is good. How adorable she is with her kids.

I appreciate both of these outfits.

The Wrap digs deep into Ellen’s empire. (Pretty fascinating!)

Maria Bello loves her boo. Aw.

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone is using her voice for empowerment alongside 98 other Indian women in a new video called “My Choice,” and sexuality is part of the message: “My choice to love a woman, or man, or both.”

Meanwhile in Bollywood, a film with queer content has been banned. Ironically titled Unfreedom, the film follows a woman who is part of an arranged marriage (with a dude) but finds herself in love with a woman who she wants to spend her life with. I want to see this one, too!

Speaking of stories about queer women getting pregnant, Seeking Dolly Parton looks really good. It’s premiering at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival on May 2.

Congrats to Rev. Kaci Clark-Porter and Rev. Holly Clark-Porter on their becoming jointly ordained at Wilmington, Delaware’s First and Central Presbyterian Church.

Two dumb lists: “Actresses Who Admitted Being Bisexual” (ADMITTED?!?) and Playboy’s “The World’s Hottest Lesbians.” Justin Bieber is on the list. HILARIOUS. Not.

Helen Mirren thinks her iconic Prime Suspect character Jane Tennison would be in a same-sex relationship now.

“She’s a lesbian, living with a very attractive partner. She gave up the drinking the moment she left the office and never went back to it. She does yoga.”

I’d watch this spin-off! (Can we make this happen please? Also, worth noting Maria Bello played a very similar role on the NBC reboot of the series a few years back.)

This is a beautiful story of a dad who found a way to accept his gay daughter.

Apparently having a “blue star tattoo” gives a “subtle hint of being a lesbian.” WTF?
