Morning Brew – Rutina Wesley to play a lesbian cop in “Broad Squad”

Happy Friday!

How do you queer diversity? This piece on LinkedIn should help employers out.

If you’re in LA this weekend, there’s a bad ass Legend of Korra art show going on and co-creator Bryan Konietzko will be in attendance with his piece, Turtle-duck Date Night. (Thanks Chen!)

From Bryan’s blog:

As for this piece, I used and modified Emily Tetri‘s production painting of Harmony Tower (designed by Lee Jung-Su). Otherwise, I drew and painted the rest of it. I based the turtle-duck boats on the charming swan boats I saw while visiting Ueno Park in Tokyo. Gallery Nucleus will be selling the above artwork as an exclusive print, in a limited edition of 100, to be released on opening night (and I’m pretty sure I’ll be signing them). I will be donating 100% of my share of the proceeds to an LGBTQ suicide prevention hotline.

Backstrom de-gayed its main female character and then made some lesbian jokes in this week’s episode. (If they WERE lesbians, it’d be more consistent with tribalistic thinking…”)

Australia has a musical called Sexercise and it has a lesbian character (of course).

Dinah Vegas is going down at the end of April.

A lesbian sex scene scene was cut from a new Cantonese erotic thriller called Lang Tong. Also cut: a penis dismemberment scene. (I don’t think the two are related.)

If you loved Tara on True Blood, get ready to cheer. Rutina Wesley is returning to TV and she’s playing a lesbian cop in ABC’s new show called Broad Squad. Rutina will play:

“Joanne, a lesbian, described as strong, strict and reserved, who prefers to keep her personal life private, in large part because she’s gay. She’s also a hard worker – a character trait that’s influenced by the fact that she’s black and a woman, and believes that, given her skin color and gender, she will have to work 10 times as hard as her fellow squad members, in order to be recognized and move up the proverbial ladder.”

Cannot wait!

Ellen DeGeneres will present Kerry Washington with the GLAAD Vanguard Award on March 21 at the Beverly Hilton.

A young woman’s friend changed her Tinder preferences to include women as a joke, but ended up helping her meet her first girlfriend. This is both a case for and against Tinder’s viability for meeting women.

Marian Rivera and Glaiza de Castro will play lovers in a new Philippine soap opera called The Rich Man’s Daughter.

FACT Magazine has a great short doc on out DJ/label owner Kim Ann Foxman.

Monifah is giving fans a sneak peek at her new video for single “One Moment.”

Latina honored out lesbian attorney and advocate Christina Canales Gorczynski as an inspiring Latina woman. We agree!

BuzzFeed has created an easy quiz to find out if your favorite show is queerbaiting you.

Out publicist Mona Elyafi was a guest on the LGBT Business Podcast.

Go behind-the-scenes with One Big Happy. (Ellen’s there!)

Post by The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The Daily Mail (I know, I know) profiled Patricia Cornwell in-depth. (I had no idea she dated an FBI agent IRL. Sounds like something one of her characters would do.)

Sally Kohn says she “kind of” agrees that being gay is a choice. I joined a conversation about that very thing on HuffPost Live yesterday.

South Africa’s lesbian community call themselves the Rainbow Girls. I love it!

Brandi Carlile and Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet were guests on Wits this week. Speaking of Brandi, loving this pic of her and Daryl!
