Foreign Affairs: The Undead

Lesbian and zombies and death, oh my!

Sounds awesome? Because it is. France’s Les Revenants (The Returned), is a supernatural drama with two lesbian main characters. They also happen to be lesbianing together, and their names are Laure and Julie (a cop and a nurse respectively).

Now for some real talk. The show is set in a little French town in which many people who died over the years seem to well, return, hence the name. The Returned decide to try and go back to their normal lives from before, especially since it seems like they don’t remember they died. Granted, things aren’t so simple.

Our heroines actually start the show apart, following an event in their past which created an emotional distance between them. In said event, Julie nearly died. Or maybe… she did? Either way by the end of the season, they are back together and possibly, unofficially adopted a zombie (OK, fine, they are not exactly zombies, just some other form of undead, let’s be PC here.)

The good news is it’s all on Netflix (it aired in the US on Sundance TV). Aren’t you happy?

There’s more good news: A second season will premiere later this year. So definitely stay tuned because this looks like fun.

And even more good news, an American adaptation is to air on A&E this March! So much to look forward to! In the mean time, here’s the series trailer, and a little subtitles-less snippet of Laure and Julie.

If that last video of Laure and Julie warmed your hearts, we better talk about Denmark’s Heartless. The supernatural teen drama follows twins Sofie and Sebastian and their ordeals at a boarding school.

The catch? The twins are cursed with a dark secret: In order for them to survive, they have to suck the energy from other people around them. If they don’t stop said sucking soon enough, they might burn the people whom they use as a human buffet. They try to figure out why they are the way they are, except, they’re not the only ones with secrets.

Emilie, for example, has a secret of her own. What’s not a secret, though, is her very obvious, very mutual attraction to Sofie. The whole thing gets complicated what with all the secrets and the succubusing (I think Emilie actually believed at some point that Sofie kissed her senseless to the point where she fainted.) They have a star crossed lovers element to them and I think you’d find the whole thing to your liking.

The show airs Mondays on Kanal 5, but hey, you can watch the episodes on iTunes!

“OK, Chen. Fine. We had some not-really-dead dead people, and we had some mysterious twins that can make one combust. But how about actual dead people? Death is in the title of this article, you know…”

Sheesh, you guys are tough. But I always keep my word.

Which is why we’re going back to Australia to talk about Out of the Blue. The show is about a murder and the show itself is deceased. So see? Double death for you demanding audience.

But let’s get specific.

A group of friends in their 30s return home after their high school reunion was cut short due to a murder. The murderer, it seems, is one of them. They just don’t know which one. How very convenient. Of course the murder alone isn’t enough, so expect hit and runs, robberies, dramatic visits from the UK, threatening emails and more.

But that’s not why you’re here, is it? You’re probably here for two of the main characters, Poppy and Peta.

Poppy is one of the reunion friends who’s described as the breeze and sunshine of the group. Peta is her new partner, and a lawyer (which is bound to become handy with everything that’s unfolding).

You’d be happy to know that they got engaged towards the end of the show, and even though Poppy’s grandma refused initially to show up (ay, Abuela!) the two tied the knot among friends and family as can be seen here.

If Peta seems familiar, it’s because actress Daisy Betts portrayed firefighter Rebecca Jones on Chicago Fire! We always hoped she’d get it on with Dawson, but this is good, too.

Sadly, it seems like DVDs of the show were never distributed. If any of you guys in Oz knows differently, please, do let us know.

Alright, before I leave you to absorb all of today’s info, and since this space will soon become a weekly column, it is my duty to report some of what happened on international TV since we launched this thing.

Firstly, if you remember, two weeks ago we discussed UK’s Call the Midwife. You guys were kind enough to let me know that Kate Lamb will re-appear as Delia, Patsy’s lover, four times total this season (it’s eight episodes long, we’re talking 50% of the episodes here, folks!) This last Sunday (February 22nd) was the second of these four times. Here’s a little piece about Kate. What’s in store for Delia and patsy? Well, feel free to let me know!

More exciting news are coming from Poland’s Cisza nad rozlewiskiem, where Magda and a yet-to-be-named character, spend some time together. Time which included kisses, and horses, and waking up naked in a barn. Thanks for the info and pictures, agi!

You can start emailing me at [email protected] about ongoing arcs so we can form what’s to come after these series of articles.

See you next time. Pack for soapy weather!
