“The 100” recap (2.12): Rubicon

Things on Mount Bloodletting aren’t going so great for the 47. Actually, are there still 47 of them? OK, on second thought, let’s not start down that road, there’ll be too many numbers and I’ll get confused.

Anyway-the President’s Smarmy Son remains smarmy and the 47 remain locked up in their bunk, huddled together like cattle. It’s not looking good.

But, hey, there’s Bellamy and Maya, at least. The two of them are talking over the radio to Raven and Clarke in Camp Jaha.

Clarke has gained a grounder guard on the orders of Lexa in the wake of that pesky assassination attempt-and let’s all pause here to squeal a bit at Lexa insisting Clarke have protection.

Everyone OK? Good.

Clarke is focusing on shutting off the acid cloud but Bellamy thinks they have bigger problems, mainly, that the 47 are starting to disappear from their “pen.” Clarke was supposed to go meet Lexa and the rest of their alliance at Ton-DC, but thinks that if her people in Mount Bloodletting are in trouble, she should stay nearby.

Clarke is in charge and everyone seems to know it. Kane knows it, when Clarke opts to send him to Ton-DC in her stead, and Abby knows it and she’s not happy. This isn’t terribly shocking, considering the last episode and Abby’s on-going insistence to view Clarke as a child instead of a woman and a leader, but it is pretty annoying. I may have audibly groaned a few times while Abby whined at Kane. I’m not proud.

While everyone else is gearing up for war or just trying to survive-Jaha and Murphy are wandering the desert in search of the City of Light. I think Jaha’s still mourning his son in a big way, and that’s likely why he’s so dead-set on finding a city full of light he’s not sure actually exists. Murphy insists he’s only along on the trip because he has nothing better to do, but it becomes increasingly clear he’s being driven by a desire to redeem himself. Jaha, Murphy, and their crew run into a girl stranded in the sand and Murphy almost immediately opens up to her. Oh, Murphy.

Bellamy is in a vent. Of course he is.

He’s trying to get a view of what’s happening to the 47 and Raven and Clarke are listening on the other end of the radio he’s holding. He finds an opening in the vent and can see what’s happening-bone marrow extraction. Clarke, somehow, recognizes what’s going on just by the sound of the drill. Which makes me wonder what Clarke did for fun as a kid. Did she watch surgery videos with her mother?

Clarke, Bellamy, and Raven listen as Smarmy Son tells Dr. Tsing about his plans to use a missile to kill everyone at the Ton-DC meeting he absolutely was NOT supposed to know about.

Clarke runs off to Ton-DC to warn everyone, but not before first lying to Bellamy about how Octavia isn’t in Ton-DC (she is) and hugging Raven, who tells her not to get blown up. Stopping trying to make me ship Clarke and Raven, show. I’m resisting. Well. I’m trying.

Bellamy really is getting a lot of mileage out of that stolen guard’s uniform, isn’t he? First he gets inside the 47’s bunk to warn Jasper that the Mountain Men are killing the people they’re taking, and then he takes lunch to the President. Isn’t that nice of him? Bellamy tries to get the President to help and the President initially resist, painting a pretty bleak picture of the 47’s chances of getting out of the mountain. Then, of course, the President relents and says he can help Bellamy buy his friends some time.

Clarke rides into Ton-DC with her grounder bodyguard in tow. There are Mountain Men in the woods, viewing her from a rifle’s scope, so things are definitely escalating quickly. Clarke heads towards Lexa but pauses to lie to Octavia about how Bellamy is faring behind enemy lines. This episode is really all about Clarke and lying, isn’t it?

That point is rather driven home when Clarke is able to tell Lexa about the incoming missile and Lexa tells Clarke their best option is to lie by omission, not warn Ton-DC, and let the missile hit its target. Lexa’s being a bit cold, true, but she’s also being the Commander that she is, and viewing the chessboard as a whole rather than as a single move. She insists that sometimes you have to concede a battle to win a war. Clarke waffles, wanting to save more people, but Lexa presses rather expertly and says that this is the right call-and Clarke knows it. Lexa leaves and, after a short pause, Clarke follows.

In the desert, that nice girl Jaha and Murphy saved betrays them because everyone on this show has the worst luck ever, but especially Murphy and Jaha. Emori steals all their stuff and knocks Murphy unconscious. But, hey, she whispers something in his ear before she does it so-obviously it’s true love.

Bellamy is in a tunnel now. Of course he is.

Raven’s on the other end of the radio and she lets slip that Octavia IS in Ton-DC. Bellamy’s pissed at Clarke, but Raven manages to focus him back on task.

Speaking of Octavia, she’s on watch in Ton-DC with another grounder, a guy. There’s some rustling in the woods and the grounder guy goes rushing off. After a minute, Octavia follows and finds Lincoln standing over the unconscious grounder, getting ready to cart him back to the Mountain in exchange for whatever that sweet sweet drug that makes him a Reaper is called.

Octavia goes full grounder on Lincoln’s ass and it’s pretty amazing to watch. She shouts at him in his language and tells him grounders don’t give up. Grounders fight. Octavia really has come a long way from the girl who recklessly swam in rivers with giant monsters in them, hasn’t she? She’s become an agent for her own change and now an agent for others and boy is it a nifty thing to see.

In the desert Murphy comes to in the middle of a bit of a mutiny. Jaha’s followers want to turn back in the wake of Emori stealing all their stuff. Jaha wants to keep going. Murphy tells them that Emori said to head due north. Jaha finds the North Star to guard them by and wow, this thing is really biblical, isn’t it?

Smug Son is ready to launch that murder missile, guys. Lexa and Clarke are in the woods, walking away, when Clarke hesitates. She spots Abby in the village and before Lexa can stop her, Clarke hurries back to grab her. Clarke is pissed, Abby is pissed, and both just-barely get far enough away from Ton-DC before the missile hits and blows everything to hell.

Clarke and Abby are okay but it doesn’t take long at all for Abby to figure out that Clarke knew the missile was going to hit. Abby begs for Clarke to tell her that this was all Lexa’s doing. Clarke, to her credit, refuses to pin the whole thing on Lexa and in not so many words tells Abby to shut up. Thank you, Clarke.

In Mount Bloodletting, Jasper mounts a bit of a spontaneous rebellion when he takes out the gun Bellamy slipped him and shoots one of the guards coming to take another of the 47 away to die.

Dr. Tsing isn’t amused and has the guards grab Jasper instead. Jasper, the guards, and Dr. Tsing get as far as the elevators before the Mountain Men double over in pain from a radiation leak caused by Bellamy and Raven, with assistance from the President. The 47 use the leak as their chance to escape their bunk and grab weapons from the dying guards. Dr. Tsing tries to escape and makes it as far as the elevator before Jasper forces the doors to stay open so she dies, screaming, from radiation poisoning. Wow, Jasper. I didn’t think you had it in you.

Smug Son is pissed because eleven of his people died when the 47 staged their little uprising and he knows the President was somehow involved. Smug Son has his guards hold the President down and inject him with something. At first I assumed he was killing his father, but when Smug Son said that the marrow would kick in soon, I gasped. That was tricky. And pretty evil. Instead of killing Dad off, he forced him to accept what he was morally opposing.

In Ton-DC Octavia and Lincoln get shakily to their feet and inspect the damage. The village is basically a smoldering crater. It’s not a pretty sight.

In the woods, further away from the destruction she let happen, Clarke observes and looks concerned.

So there we have it. Everyone’s morals have been compromised, and war is coming. We know so far that Lexa, Clarke, Abby, Octavia and Lincoln survived the blast-but what about Kane and the grounders he was with? We’ll have to wait and see, I guess.
