Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (November 21, 2008)

L IS FOR LOCKDOWN? Back in September, we told you that the upcoming spin-off of The L Word would center around Leisha Hailey.

In a recent interview with Metromix Los Angeles, Leisha Hailey was asked for a hint of what we could all expect to see in the spin-off.

Her response was a little worrying.

Metromix: On behalf of the countless fans of The L Word and Alice Pieszecki, is there anything at all you can say about the proposed spin-off show? Leisha Hailey: Well…It hasn’t been picked up yet; it’s still just a pilot. It’s definitely not going to be what people are expecting – let’s put it that way. We have the most loyal fans to ever walk the earth, so I really hope they aren’t too upset with the direction of the character on the new show. We’ll see.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement. But seriously, what unimaginable, unlikely, or just plain uninteresting thing could there possibly be left to do to a beloved L Word character?

As long as they don’t kill her off, make her straight or turn her into a kitten-kicking, right-wing religious zealot, we’re still all in, right?

I think we’re about to find out.

According to Automatic Straddle, the spin-off pilot – which will be filmed in December and later turned into a series only if greenlit by Showtime – will possibly be set in London.

And in prison.

This would make at least a little sense if the spin-off focused on jailbird Helena Peabody. But Alice? Unless we’re talking about the Fashion Police, I just can’t see her getting busted. We also reported that the upcoming promo for the show hinted heavily at there being a “killer” among the cast this season.

So are we to presume that Alice might take the law into her own hands and give Jenny Schecter the dramatic end that so many lesbians probably think her Hollywood tale deserves?

The only other details Automatic Straddle had to share with us about the spin-off were character names and descriptions from the breakdowns sent out to entertainment industry reps who would send their clients out to audition for the parts, and we’ve confirmed this directly ourselves by viewing the casting sides.

Those are listed below, along with a few casting suggestions of my own making:

“WADE DAWSON – Mid 20s – the good looking self-centered one who battles inner demons with the help of anti-psychotic medications and ‘intense indiscreet’ sex.”

“GRACIELE MARTINEZ – Gang leader and mother of two with a long rap sheet.”

“VALENTINA GALINDO – Late 30s, super-smart well-known gangster with a lot of dead bodies under her belt. She’s also a community activist/organizer and has been known to pal around with Bill Ayers.”
“MARGARET ELDER – Ambitious Type-A super tough mega-hot babe who succeeds at everything she wants to do ruthlessly.”

“HELEN MILLER – At surface level seems to be ‘no nonsense,’ calm and so forth but underneath it all she’s all about justice, dignity and humanity and will do anything to make it right.”

“SHERI SILVA – a little fragile and a little manipulative. Likes things her way, right away.”

Regardless of how ridiculously salacious the idea of an L Word prison drama spin-off might sound, the crossover possibilities it presents are endless.

For instance, what if the women of Bad Girls share a police wagon ride with the convicts of The L Word spin-off, resulting in some Con Air-style mayhem? (Lez Highway?)

Or perhaps the delinquents of Girltrash could get busted and dumped in the clink with Alice and company, then decide to raise the prison roof via a prison riot. Rose Rollins could even play her own twin!

Since the prison storyline is still officially unconfirmed, it’s probably a bit premature to start planning an L Word prison break. But I guess we can comfort ourselves with this fact: while the lesbian professionals in the world of television and film are rapidly disappearing (ala Seattle Grace Hospital), there are still plenty of lesbian criminals.

NEW L WORD PROMO POSTER GIVES US PAUSE The L Word has never billed itself to be anything more than a lesbian soap opera; however, it looks like the promo staff of The L Word took a cue from MTV and fully embraced the “sex sells” doctrine.

As queer women, we are often in a bind as to how to react to overtly sexualized images of queer women in the media. We are sexual beings, so part of us may react with some level of excitement, yet we are also put in the position of wanting to portray to the general public that we are not the type of sex hungry deviants that right-wing muckrakers claim that we are.

The Gossip Girl promos also fall into the vein of salacious and sensational, yet no one would assume that all straight people are deviant nymphos – only the straight people in Manhattan. Kidding, of course. I think.

But then again, it’s just television for crying out loud! Shouldn’t we just loosen up? Maybe? This promo poster seems to be just a tad over the top. Of course, I find the thought of Shane and Jenny knocking boots to be rather abhorrent, so I may be biased.

Do you know what this poster reminds me of? Back in college, we had a dance at the end of senior year nicknamed “The Last Chance Dance.” Everyone knew that we would be going our separate ways a few days later, so this realization acted as a cue for some people to jump on other willing participants and perform R and even X-rated acts on them right on the dance floor.

After all, this was our “last chance.” In a few days we would be back in our parents’ houses in places like Dubuque, Iowa and Raeford, North Carolina pondering the next step in our lives.

As the run of The L Word draws to a close, a similar feeling of urgency seems to be going through the heads of the producers and promotions staff. This is the last chance for the characters to get into some steamy scenes, because once this show goes off the air, it’s all over.

Quick! Let’s just throw any two actresses on the show on any flat surface on the set and let them go at it!

While Schwarzenbach reportedly said he’s not sure of any recording plans, The Thorns of Life played a nine-song set, which is pretty impressive for a band with no future lined up yet. As for Sea’s musical background, she’s been in bands before (and not just her girlfriend’s). In her home state of California, she played as part of art-punk bands The Gr’ups and Cypher in the Snow. Last year, in an interview with Venus Zine, she discussed her love for both acting and music, and how she can’t ever choose between the two:

I’ve played music since I was a little kid. And being from the punk scene, music has been a doorway to so much possibility. I’ve traveled all over the world – some pretty extreme places – just with my music. When someone asked me last night in an interview, “What would you choose, acting or music?” I can’t even separate them. I get really sentimental about it.
Now that the final season of The L Word has wrapped, it looks like she won’t have to. Keep an eye out for The Thorns of Life. Hopefully they’ll at least secure a MySpace page soon.

ANGELA AND ROXIE (ANGELROX?) UPDATE Angela (Michaela Conlin) asked Roxie (Nichole Hiltz) to move in with her at the end of this week’s episode (“The Passenger in the Over”) of the Fox crime drama Bones, despite the fact that they’ve only been dating again for a few weeks (they were involved for a year in college, many years ago).

Someone on the writing staff clearly knows their way around a lesbian relationship! But shockingly, Roxie said no. Here’s how the conversation went down, over dinner and wine at a restaurant (Americans can watch the episode on Fox.com):

Angela: I want you to move in with me. Roxie: This isn’t just because you’ve had a bad day, right? Angela: No, it isn’t. Roxie: You’ve never done that before. Asked someone to move in with you. Angela: No. Roxie: You’ve lived with people at their place – Angela: With my bad packed at the front door, yeah. (pause) Why aren’t you saying anything? (pause) Right. Because you’re going to say no. Roxie: Yeah, I am. Say “no thanks.” Angela: Why? Roxie: It’s too soon. You aren’t ready. I’m not ready. Let’s just see how things unfold, OK? Angela (smiling): OK. Roxie: What? Angela: I’m always the one to say that.
That kind of prudent, common-sense thinking is quite suspicious, Roxie. Are you sure you’re really gay?

Although this relationship is a minor subplot in the series, I’m impressed with how well it’s been handled so far – particularly with how seriously Angela and her colleagues are taking the relationship.

Which of course means it’s going to go rapidly downhill any minute now. (Hey, I’ve earned the right to be cynical this week month year!)

HOLLYOAKS NEW LESBIAN STORYLINE AfterEllen.com reader Laura tipped us off that there’s some lesbian crushing going on in her favorite UK soap, Hollyoaks. The character of Sarah Barnes, a model, has had her fair share of failed relationships (with men, that is).

This week, it was reported that she will share an intimate connection with someone – Zoe Carpenter, aka her dad’s girlfriend. It appears that in the UK, some television writers actually pay attention to what their actors want. Last January, actress Zoe Lister (who plays Zoe on the show) told a reporter she was interested in trying out a Sapphic scene: “I’d definitely do a lesbian love scene in Hollyoaks,” she said. “That would be a really good story.”

And it should be – at least, so far. Things are supposedly hot and heavy between Sarah (played by Loui Batley) and Zoe, although it comes after a night of drinking. The two are actually only one year apart (clearly Sarah’s dad likes younger women) and their relationship has been a little rocky because of their closeness in age.

But they’ve bonded lately, and now Zoe is trying to forget about Sarah, while Sarah tries to figure out what she’s feeling for her dad’s girlfriend. Scandalous!

The storyline is set to air on Hollyoaks‘ new late-night series, Hollyoaks Later, which begins Nov. 24. Although it might seem strange, it’s nothing new for the show, which has had several spinoffs and late-night counterparts since its inception in 1995.

DANIELA SEA PLAYS BASS IN THE THORNS OF LIFE You know Daniela Sea is on The L Word, and that she’s with Bitch, but did you know she could play the bass guitar?

Sea is part of a new band called The Thorns of Life that began playing live house shows over the last week in Brooklyn. The band is already being buzzed about, because not only does it feature a popular lesbian actress, but also Blake Schwarzenbach of the legendary indie punk bands Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil and writer Aaron Cometbus. Talk about a meeting of the minds!

An Alternative Press review of one of their small shows over the weekend says the songs were “basic punk rock romps with subtle dynamic changes” and had mythological themes, as well as a song about “losing your virginity… to the right one.”

MORE BITCH SLAP Breasts! Nuns! Strippers! Guns! Wait, sorry, I feel a little woozy after watching the new trailer for Bitch Slap.

Please distract yourself with this shot of the women of Bitch Slap pouring water on each other so you can feel as woozy as I do. Since our first breathless reporting on what is shaping up to be the mother of all post-modern B-movie exploitation flicks back in August, the ladies (and gentlemen — but let’s face it we just care about the ladies) of Bitch Slap have released a new red-band trailer (for mature audiences) with more fights, explosions and cleavage than you can shake a stick at. The new trailer incorporates more of the film’s visual effects and green-screen footage resulting in a film that looks like a cross between Sin City, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kil!l and The Flying Nun. It also introduces the film’s three leading ladies: The Sexbomb Hel (Erin Cummings), The Psycho-Slut Camero (America Olivo) and The Stripper Trixie (Julia Voth). While the National Organization for Women might not rush out to give the film its “Feminists of the Year” plaque just yet, the nod-and-a-wink exploitation in the movie seems to come from a place of female strength (and overall sexiness). So instead of wagging my angry women’s study minor finger at it, I’m busy just trying to roll back my tongue into my mouth. What? I’m only human. The spot also gives us our first glimpse of Lucy Lawless and RenĂ©e O’Connor (that’s Xena and Gabrielle, to the rest of us) as Mother Superior and Sister Batrill. Wow, do all nuns wear that underneath their habits? If so, I suddenly feel like finding religion. Erin, who was nice enough to write and give us a shout out after the first trailer, sent me another email updating progress on the film. In short, she thinks we’ll like it. I’m inclined to agree.

I’ve seen the rough cut of the film and it’s BREATHTAKING. I know that your readers will love the roller-coaster thrill ride that this film will take them on. As for the sex scene between me and Julia Voth… no one will be complaining that it’s too short! It goes on…. and on…. and on… and it’s pretty hot.
She also said to look for the three ladies in the February Maxim UK. The issue hits (and no doubt will subsequently scorch) newsstands in December. If you just can’t wait to see more, be sure to catch Erin on an episode of the CBS crime drama Cold Case at 9 p.m. this Sunday. She plays a 50s pin-up who gets shot through the heart. Pin-up? Sure. Bad ass? You betcha. So, if you’ve regained feeling through your central nervous system, please feel free to express your thoughts in the comments. Or, you know, just make monosyllabic sounds and punch random letter on your keyboard – whatever you feel up to.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS‘ LESBIAN HEARTBREAKER Last year, AfterEllen.com’s Malinda Lo told us all why we should be watching the acclaimed television show Friday Night Lights. In her blog post, she mentioned plenty of good reasons, and thanks to AE reader Ellen, we recently learned of yet another: last week a popular new (and, for now) minor character came out as a lesbian.

On the football-themed, small town high school drama, Devin (played by Stephanie Hunt) had been presented as a possible love interest for her dorky bandmate, Landry (Jesse Plemons). Having just been blown off by the school hottie (whom he’d defended from a rapist), Landry took an interest in freshman Devin, the new bass player in his band, Crucifictorious. Devin flirted with Landry and even kissed him, but just before he could ask her out on a proper date, she broke some bad (for him) news:

Devin: Landry, I’m a lesbian. Landry: (laughs) No, you’re not. Devin: I’m serious. I’m gay. I like girls, not boys. I feel like I need to tell you because you have the wrong idea about us. Landry: That’s important information and, that, I’m really glad to know because I could have sworn the other day that you kissed me back whenever I kissed you. Devin: I didn’t want to be rude, Landry, and I thought I had to make sure I would give it a try. I know now that I really am. So I really should thank you, I guess. Landry: I’m gonna have to go and let this sink in because I, uh, don’t know how to react to this right now.
Ellen told me that when Landry and Devin met up again later, Devin wanted to make sure he was okay with “the secret.” Devin was worried that Landry might be upset and tell people in their small town, but he reassured her that she had no need to worry. Then they rocked out together. This isn’t the first time FNL has found a low-key way to introduce a lesbian character. In 2007, we learned that the town mayor is a lesbian, one who asked the football coach’s wife to work on her re-election campaign while resting her hand on her partner’s knee. Obviously, she was a maverick.

Devin’s character is already popular with the critics. A Los Angeles Times blogger raved, “And the straight-to-the-point, musically gifted Devin is the toughest, coolest, smartest new character Friday Night Lights has introduced this season. If it was a mistake not to keep Jean around (she’s now on Heroes), then making Devin a regular would instantly right it. The fact that she can play the blues is an added bonus.”

Let’s hope that Devin will buck recent tv trends by staying gay and not getting her pink slip suspended the moment she gets a girlfriend.

COOL CAT CORA SPEAKS OUT ON PROP. 8 Given my tendency to have longer-term relationships with domestic animals than domestic partners, I have always wanted to find a cat that can cook. If only.

Cat Cora, patron saint of lesbian foodies and still the only female Iron Chef, has earned our affection for many reasons, not the least of which is that she still loves AfterEllen.com, even after a close encounter with Karman and Bridget at the 2008 HRC Gala. Cora lives with her partner of 10 years, Jen Cora, and their two sons, Zoran and Caje, in the Santa Barbara area of California. Jen and Cat are expecting their third child in April. As if Iron Chef America and a growing family aren’t enough to keep her busy, Cora is about to open a new restaurant, CCQ (Cat Cora’s ‘Que), in Costa Mesa in December.

Food Gal Carolyn Jung spoke with Cora recently about her life and loves – and how she feels about Prop. 8. (Thanks to AE reader Jen for the tip!)

Here are some choice excerpts from the interview:

CJ: A lot has been said about this recent historic election that with the passage of Prop. 2 (protection for farm animals) and of Prop. 8 (amending the state constitution to restrict marriage to a union between a man and a woman) that Californians care more about chickens than human beings. What do you think?

Cat: We’re all disappointed. On a good note, it was close. But it’s shocking and stunning to think this happened, given how progressive we think Californians are. It’s sad this issue is even on the ballot in this day and age.

CJ: Did you and Jen walk down the aisle before the election?

Cat: No. We’re domestic partners. We were legally advised not to rush to the altar, because once you get married, your domestic partnership goes out the window. With another child on the way, a health-care proxy is absolutely necessary to have. But I support everyone who has gotten married.

CJ: Did you ever fear that some of your adoring public might view you differently?

Cat: Jen and I have never hidden the fact that we’re together. Our kids are important to us, and we want them to know we’re proud to be their mothers. You have to stand up for who you are, because you are basically standing up for them. We’re just an all-American family living the all-American dream.
