Zoie Palmer to star in SyFy’s “Dark Matter”

Best news, Lost Girl fans! Even though the show is in its final season, Dr. Lauren Lewis will be moving on to something new and exciting. Out actress Zoie Palmer has been cast as the lead in SyFy’s new series, Dark Matter

Based on a 2012 comic series of the same name by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie (the guys behind Stargate), Dark Matter follows “the six-member crew of a starship that wakes up from stasis with no idea of who they are or where they’re going. ” Here’s the description from their publisher:

A derelict ship floats in space, its troubled crew awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got on board. Their search for answers triggers the vessel’s deadly security system: a relentless android bent on their destruction. Facing threats at every turn, they have to work together to survive a voyage charged with vengeance, redemption, betrayals, and hidden secrets best left unknown.

Zoie’s co-stars include Melissa O’NeilMarc Bendavid, Anthony Lemke Mallari Jr., Jodelle Ferland and Roger Cross, and shooting begins January 7 in Toronto.  It looks like a premiere won’t happen until this summer, but that’s definitely something to look forward to. Zoie plays a character called The Android: “In personality, she is more butler-like than your typical robot – concise, staid, yet surprisingly possessed of a subtly wry sense of humor, she is an indispensible member of the crew since she can exercise control over all the ship’s systems. And she isn’t shy about reminding everyone of the fact. An outsider among the ship’s human passengers, she is almost child-like in her earnest desire to fit in.”

As far as I can tell, there is no lesbian content in Dark Matter, the comic, and Joseph and Paul came under scrutiny for a bizarre Stargate Universe lesbian body-swapping episode in 2009. Joseph keeps an updated blog about his work and has made casting announcements there in the past, so if you plan on keeping up with the series, I suggest bookmarking it now.

Zoie tweeted about the announcement, and it looks like she’s pretty excited, so I am, too!
