“Jane the Virgin” recap (1.8): She’s Baaaaaaack!

Finally, Luisa is back! Let the lesbian choir sing. All rejoice in her presence.

But first, let’s start from the beginning.

This week’s flashback began with Xiomara receiving a court order for parking ticket in the mail. Abuela was upset with Xiomara for this, and a young Jane is eager to know why it would be of concern for Abuela. Abuela goes into story mode about how she met her husband, Jane’s grandfather. Turns out the grandfather was rich and gave up all his money to be with Abuela. No longer rich and trying to get into the United States from Venezuela turned out to be harder than they thought. Abuela didn’t say it exactly, but turns out she’s an illegal citizen.

We finally found out why Rafael stood up Jane and ran off to Mexico City. He went on a search for his sister, Luisa. If he didn’t bring back Luisa in time for the court date with Jane, then he would lose his job. He tracked down Luisa’s bank and credit card statements to somewhere in Mexico City, but Luisa was nowhere to be found.

While Rafael was away, Jane kept busy by hugging the many couples from church who wanted her holiness to rub off on them.

Xiomara was dating Marco, the dad from the previous episode but dropped him as soon as she realized there weren’t any sparks between them. At least no sparks like the ones between her and Rogelio. I’m serious, there are legit sparks between them. We can see it and hear it whenever they touch. Rogelio even got her some studio time with a top producer. At first she was upset because she thought the producer loved her voice but found out the producer only contacted her because Rogelio set it up. But then she realized that Rogelio was doing it out of the kindness of his heart. Then they touched and there were sparks.

Petra and her mom are cooped up in a tiny room with Ivan, still, as their hostage.

And, Michael is still on the hunt for Sin Rostro. Michael and his partner find a guy at the loading docks that is associated with Sin Rostro, and follow him back to the hotel where he gets a room. They really need to give his character more of a storyline because it’s making it hard for me to like him. Hopefully by next week we can see more of this.

And now that we are up to speed with what our favorite characters have been up to since the last episode two weeks ago, let’s get into the juicy stuff.

Jane’s court day arrives and it looks as though it’s going to be a default judgment, with Luisa nowhere to be found. But, of course, she pops up late and in what seems to be a sort of hippy/stoner attitude. Her hair and flowing colorful blouse seem to give a “let’s love one another” image. Apparently she was away at a retreat where she found herself, and that money is the root of all her problems. She’s back. That’s all that matters. Since Luisa has returned, there is no default and her returning in time means that Rafael can keep his job.

Rafael asks for his job back and his father gives it to him under one condition: Rafael has to answer to Laughlin. But that’s not the worst of it. Laughlin has hired on Petra. Rafael meets with Laughlin to talk about returning to his job. Laughlin is happy to break the news to Rafael that instead of answering directly to him, Rafael is now to answer to Petra. Rafael leaves upset and tells them to shove the job.

Later that night, Rafael and Jane finally have a little alone time. They go out to dinner, just the two of them. A couple from another table sends over some food, which they say is for Jane the Virgin. Rafael is confused, because Jane never told him that she has yet to do the deed. She finally comes clean but Rafael’s reaction is not what she expected. He’s freaked out, and obviously uncomfortable with the fact that he’s dating a virgin. He downs his scotch and immediately asks for another. Needless to say, they didn’t have such a great dinner together.

While Jane is snuggled up in bed trying to sleep, Rafael is at the hotel bar having a drink. An attractive female is seated nearby. Seeing that he is finished with his drink, and can definitely use another, she offers her drink and insists that she hasn’t even taken one sip. So he does. The woman then scoots over and into the seat right next to Rafael.

The next morning Jane is at work, at the hotel. She is told to deliver mimosas to a room that requested her specifically. When she arrives, the woman who offered Rafael her drink is waiting in the bed, naked. Next to her is Rafael, fast asleep. He awakes and then chases Jane out of the room. He claims to not remember anything from last night. Jane doesn’t believe him. What she sees is a man who freaked out about her being a virgin and then slept with the next woman he met. When Jane leaves, Rafael goes back into the room and asks the woman what exactly happened between them. He notices that the woman is wearing a chain with the Jane the Virgin medallion the nuns have been selling.

A few hours later, the woman goes to Jane’s classroom and apologizes. The woman is an escort and was paid by someone to drug Rafael and then pretend to sleep with him. She then goes into a sob story about how she’s a decent person, and that she has a son whom she hasn’t seen in a long time due to certain circumstances. She says she’s a very religious person despite her career choice. She asks Jane for a hug because she can use a miracle at this point. Jane is nice enough to tell her the truth that she’s not a messiah. Instead, she’s a medical mistake. Regardless, Jane still gives the woman a hug because she looks as though she could really use one.

Speaking of couples, what’s going on with Rose and Luisa? Oh, you know, Luisa just tells Rose that she was mainly the reason for going away on that retreat. It wasn’t just her addiction. Scratch that. It was her addiction to Rose. She pours her heart out to Rose telling her that she wants to be with her. She wants to tell everyone about them and then run away together. Rose has to ruin it all by saying that it’s over between them. But what Rose doesn’t know is Luisa’s Shaman, from the retreat, told her that she needs to come clean to her father. Luisa tells Rose that she’s giving her some time to figure out how to tell him or else she’ll personally give him the details.

Rose, being the sly one she is, confides in Rafael. She tells him that Luisa is acting crazy and saying strange things, sexual things to her. Rose pretends to be afraid and tells Rafael that she doesn’t know how to respond to Luisa. Rafael makes mention of Luisa sounding like their mother. So, is this supposed to be a genetic sort of thing with the women in their family? Was the mother crazy? Then again, that whole family all a bit on the crazy side.

Hearing about how crazy Luisa has been acting, the family decides to have a sort of intervention for her. She arrives into a room where Rafael, Rose, her father, and a nurse are seated. Rose tells everyone that Luisa is having fantasies about her and that she’s delusional. This sends Luisa into a fit of rage. An all hell has broken loose sort of rage. Luisa attacks Rose. She jumps onto her and screams, “Stop lying!” several times and, “Why are you doing this?” It takes several men to get Luisa off of Rose. Her father says he has no choice but to commit her.

While getting ready to go hear Xiomara’s song at the hotel, Jane walks in on Abuela praying the rosary. Jane asks Xiomara if Abuela is OK, since she was praying again. Xiomara reminds Jane about the story Abuela told about going to court. Jane completely forgot about Abuela’s fear of the courts and deportation. This prompts her to withdraw the lawsuit.

When they get to the hotel Rafael asks Jane about dropping the lawsuit. She explains that she did it because of her grandmother and because of the baby. She initially wanted to sue because she didn’t want the baby. Now that she wants the baby, there’s no reason to sue. She doesn’t want the money, although she does tell Rafael that she’s going to need it in writing that he’ll financially support the baby. Rafael, then, tells Jane that he put his share of the hotel on the line by underwriting Luisa’s medical malpractice. Which means that Jane was suing him. He never told her because he didn’t want to affect her decision to sue. Jane, remembering the love story Abuela told her as a child of her grandfather giving up his money for love, swooned even more over Rafael. This is where real sparks begin with the two.
