“The Good Wife” recap (6.2): Out with the old, in with the new

Alicia somehow still manages to look flawless as she waits for Cary to be escorted to their behind-the-glass jailhouse meeting. When Cary arrives, they are told they have five minutes, which is actually about 90 seconds in Good Wife time. Alicia needs to be debriefed on Cary’s cases, including a bunch of coders suing Chumhum. When the subject turns to Diane joining the firm, Cary squints his eyes at Alicia, most likely wishing Rory Gilmore was visiting him instead.

In the courthouse, Diane battles Finn once again about Cary’s bail. Kalinda waves at Cary from the seats, trying to communicate with him in eyelid flutters and blatant questions scribbled on notepads. Finn throws them all for a loop when he calls Alicia as a witness, in order to depose her regarding the legitimacy of the bail money.

In the visiting area, Kalinda and Diane meet with Cary. Kalinda drops the bomb about the evidence that Cary is on tape, breaking the law. Cary insists that the tape is a fake, or has at the very least, been altered. He only answered hypothetical questions that Bishop’s men asked him.

At the Florrick Agos offices, there is major construction going on. Bishop shows up unannounced, and amidst the banging hammers and whirling saws, tells her that he doesn’t like that she’s testifying. Also, if he ends up being asked to testify for Cary, he will pull Cary’s bail money.

Peter is being interviewed on a talk show, while Eli watches from the sidelines. He’s surprised to see Valerie Jarrett, who is a real life senior advisor to the White House. The two have some bad blood because she never got him a Washington job like she promised. Eli is willing to look past this slight however, because Jarrett is a big proponent of women running for political office. He could use her help with a certain reluctant State’s Attorney candidate.

Alicia takes the stand in Cary’s bail hearing. She testifies that Mr. Rojas who provided the bail, is indeed an associate of Lemond Bishop. Finn tries to trip her up by asking if Bishop was present when the money exchanged hands. Like the badass she is, Alicia says yes he was –audible courtroom gasp– but on a different matter. Take that, Polmar. Finn does get the upper hand however when he manages to show that a large portion of Mr. Rojas’s fitness center’s roster matches that of the country death records. The Judge thinks it’s fishy too, and grants Finn’s request to bring Bishop to the stand. There goes the bail money.

At Lockhart Gardner, former associate Dean (played by the always delightful Taye Diggs) shows back up after working the last few years in New York. He’s looking forward to joining the Lockhart Gardner team until he finds out at the staff meeting that Diane is leaving the firm. A crestfallen Dean pulls Diane aside to say he really only came back to work for her. Diane leads him to the elevator where she asks him to come with her to Florrick Agos, and encourages him to check the place out.

Cary is rightfully feeling depressed at his next meeting with Alicia. He worries that he’ll spend the next year locked up while waiting to go to trial. Talk turns to the Chumhum deposition, where Alicia is going up against a lawyer named Lorraine Joy, who didn’t hire her once upon a time. Cary gives her some insight into the case so she can take the lead. Back at the office, Alicia takes Cary’s advice, and manages to swiftly take down one of the key complainants. Drinking on the job, bad reviews, sexting? The guy knows he’s toast even before Alicia suggests, “Let’s go through these sexts, one at a time.”

Kalinda tracks Bishop down on the soccer field while he cheers his son on. Kalinda is trying to work with him, but Bishop wants to know who betrayed him. He agrees to let his men speak with her, as long as he’s present.

Since Cary’s bail has now dried up, Alicia is looking at mortgaging her house again. The bank calls and grants her the mortgage, but Peter needs to co-sign since his name is on the deed. At the same time, Alicia gets a call from Valerie Jarrett who is pretty much just reading a script from Eli, trying to convince her to run for office. The conversation actually gives Alicia pause.

As Alicia heads out of the office, she misses Dean coming in. Poor Dean walks into utter chaos, and Robyn does he best to guide him through the firm. They may have a homeless guy named Gunther that takes showers in their bathroom, but they also have fantastic coffee.

Kalinda meets up with Bishop’s three men to discuss Cary. They all corroborate Cary’s story, and tell Kalinda they were talking about hypothetical movie situations. Kalinda figures out that the informant is Trey, Bishop’s top guy. If she tells Bishop though, he’ll kill him.

Peter, in a rare show of pushback with Alicia, refuses to sing the mortgage. Not only is it bad for his political image, it’s bad for Alicia’s possible future in politics. She accuses him of being punitive for what’s happened between them, but Peter counters that it’s simply not a smart move.

Dean is not happy with what he’s seen at Florrick Agos and goes back to Diane with his thoughts. She admits that FA is rough around the edges, but she wants him to see the possibility. The way she spins it, it actually starts to sound good to Dean.

At the ChumHum meeting, Mrs. Chumhum herself, Deena Lampard testifies about their no-poaching policy. The lawyer Lorraine tries to catch Deena in a lie by suggesting that Deena’s use of emoticons belies the true nature of Chumhum’s policies. Yes, emoticons. Robyn pulls Alicia out of a meeting to introduce her to Ernie Nolan, who runs the shady ERCO Properties. He’s got a big fat check for Alicia to use for Cary’s bail. Alicia knows he must have some ulterior motive, but why? She refuses his check and storms into Eli’s office. “I’m not running,” she tells him once again. Eli swears he didn’t send anyone to see Alicia.

Finn meets up with State’s Attorney Castro to express worry that the only one of Bishop’s associates that isn’t on the witness list is their informant, Trey. They know that Florrick Agos now knows about their inside man.

Dean meets with Diane to give he his decision about joining Florrick Agos. In spite of his earlier hesitations, he’s not only on board, but he’s managed to convince a half dozen key department heads to come with them. Go Dean, we like you already.

Kalinda gets some seriously bad news. One of the witnesses who could testify for Cary has been murdered, Kalinda suspects Bishop ordered the hit, and it’s not even the man who betrayed him. Now there is only one witness left who can vouch for Cary.

Alicia is woken up at seven am by a reporter looking for a quote about a recent push poll regarding her candidacy for State’s Attorney. “I don’t have a candidacy,” she sleepily tells the reporter before hanging up on her. Alicia contacts Eli to give him some hell, but he denies ordering the poll. He suggests that since the poll was worded in a negatively slanted light that it must have come from Castro. Even so, the poll puts her 74 points ahead of Castro in a possible election. Alicia heads to Castro’s office where she assures him that she’s not running. He’s defensive and not doing a very good job of hiding how threatened he is by her. She takes the opportunity to ask why he’s going after Cary. When he says it’s because of drugs, she doesn’t believe him.

Alicia isn’t the only one riled up about the poll. Peter assumes it’s Castro too, but Eli fesses up that he did it to push Alicia.

In the ChumHum deposition, the opposing side brings in Patric Edelstein, the CEO of competing company, Sleuthway. He tells the lawyers that he and Deena made a deal not to poach each other’s best talent, but he never really thought Deena would hold up on her end of the bargain. Alicia asks if Patric doesn’t like Deena, and if perhaps he has a personal grudge against her. See, Patric and Deena used to date until she dumped him for the CEO of Chumhum. Alicia manages to turn the whole case on it’s head when she suggests that is Patric didn’t think that Deane would hold up her end of the agreement, then the agreement wasn’t valid in the first place. Lorraine knows she’s been outdone, and defers to Alicia’s small settlement. “You’re an assassin,” Lorraine tells her, kicking herself for not hiring Alicia.

Knowing that Cary’s chances are slim if there are no witnesses to testify in his defense, Kalinda pleads with Bishop to not kill any more of his men. Bishop coldly offers Kalinda deal. She can pick one of the remaining witnesses. “Who does Cary need?” he asks her. Oh shit.

The partners are Florrick Agos, including Cary from the jailhouse phone, meet to vote on Diane Lockhart. Cary votes “nay” but he’s outvoted and Diane becomes the new senior partner at the firm. After Cary is cut off, Alicia motions that the firm spend its big ChumHum advance to bail Cary out. At first, the partners are reluctant, but they agree to do it. Cary will make bail!

Diane Lockhart stands in her perfect office, glorious against the Chicago skyline. She watches the minutes tick down, then leaves the office she’s occupied for thirteen years. As she leaves, Dean and the other lawyers exiting the firm join her. She walks with her head held high, leaving with the dignity that she rightfully deserves. When they all gather in the elevator, Diane whispers a goodbye to her old life before the doors close before her.

In another elevator on the other side of town, Alicia travels to her office, next to a shirtless Gunther. There is something about her demeanor that suggests that she may not be able to shake off this whole candidacy thing that easily. When the doors open, Cary is standing there. Alicia is beaming. “We missed you,” she tells him before pulling him in for a long hug. It’s the first they’ve ever shared.
