Six things to remember before “Rizzoli & Isles” returns for Season 5

Your favorite totally gay, not gay homicide detective and medical examiner are back for their fifth season of bickering at one another and pretending to not be married. The new season of Rizzoli & Isles premieres today on TNT. Since it’s been a few months since we last saw our dynamic duo together, it seems like a good time to refresh people’s memories about where they left off.

Six Things To Remember Before Season 5 Starts:

1. Jane Rizzoli might be pregnant, it’s not Maura’s.

That sound you hear is the collective groan of all lesbiankind. The season ended with Jane revealing to Maura that she thinks she is pregnant with Casey’s child. I know, I know—it stinks. But, there is a small silver lining because…

2. Casey loves the military more than Jane.

After an ultimatum to marry him or break up, Jane at first says “I do” (and he agrees to leave the Armed Forces). But then Col. Beard Force comes to his senses and realizes Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is long dead and decides to continue his career in hopes of becoming a general. So he leaves for the Balkans. Jane decides not to give up her career and follow him. Bottom line: The engagement is off and he is gone.

4. Tommy has fallen off the wagon, acts like an idiot.

Tommy started drinking again because of Papa Rizzolio’s cancer scare. This drives Lydia away with their son, T.J. And so Tommy and Frankie get into a fight because, I don’t know, testosterone or something.

4. Frankie kisses Maura, Maura does not kiss him back.

Frankie plants an uninvited smooch on Dr. Maura Isles as a way of testing out his stitches on his split lip. But it is not reciprocated. So let’s stop trying to make that complete lack of sexual chemistry happen, m’kay writers? I like Jordan Bridges just fine, but he has more chemistry with a car dashboard than Sasha Alexander.

5. Frost is on vacation.

Writers chose not to discuss Lee Thompson Young’s tragic suicide at the end of Season 4. The cast and crew were working on the final episode when the actor passed, so it is understandable that they left the handling of his character’s departure until the new season. Det. Frost’s absence so far has been explained away by being “on vacation.” I expect it will be addressed in the second episode of the new season, titled “Goodbye.”

6. Janet Tamaro has left the building.

Rizzoli & Isles creator and showrunner Janet Tamaro stepped away from the series at the end of last season. TV veteran Jan Nash took over and is the show’s new guiding force headed into Season 5. You know when you’re waiting to go on that first date and put all your hopes and dreams into a quiet place in your heart that maybe, maybe, this one will work out? That’s how all us gay ladies feel waiting to see how Nash does. Don’t let us down and make us get our friends to fake call us in the middle of dinner, Jane.

In case you still need a refresher, TNT is airing a 16-hour marathon of the entire fourth season starting at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, leading up to the premiere at 9 p.m.

So, tell me your most heartfelt hopes and dreams for the new season. Feeling optimistic about Nash? Feeling worried about the possible bun in Jane’s oven? And don’t forget to live-tweet your #gayzzoli feelings during the show. Subtext Recaps return on Thursday.
