Lesbian directors, actors and more in “Reel to Real: Portrayals and Perceptions of Gays in Hollywood”

A new exhibit on LGBT representation in film and television is the first of its kind at the Hollywood Museum in Los Angeles. Reel to Real: Portrayals and Perceptions of Gays in Hollywood opens today in conjunction with Outfest and LGBT Heritage Month. Last night’s VIP reception allowed us a look inside the retrospective, which includes “photos, costumes, props and iconic imagery from the past and present.”

A large portion of wall is dedicated to out queer characters, including some of our favorite women from Lost Girl, Glee, Chicago Fire, Saving Face, Imagine Me & You and many more.

Ellen DeGeneres and The L Word are both featured on posters but there isn’t much more about them in the exhibition.

Pieces from the set of Pretty Little Liars and The Fosters accompany a glass case dedicated to out director/writer Norman Buckley.

Out directors Kimberly Peirce and Dorothy Arzner both have their own photos and plaques dedicated to their work.

Emmy winner Amy Feldman shared set pieces and drawings from her work on 2 Broke Girls.

The walls are lined with photos of known LGBTQ actors throughout time.

And there are quotes about having pride, being out or playing gay from allies and out actors alike.

The Lavender Effect and ONE Archives shared newspaper clippings from Los Angeles, which provided an interesting reminder of what the social climate was like outside of Hollywood during the time so many actors were closeted.

And no exhibit on queer Hollywood would be complete without acknowledgement of lesbian vampires.

Reel to Real: Portrayals of Gay Hollywood is at The Hollywood Museum from June 6 – July 21.
