In line at your local shelter already because The Puppy Bowl and Kitten Halftime Show got you so good this year? Queen Latifah‘s “America the Beautiful” was so good, though, huh?
And speaking of “America the Beautiful,” Coca-Cola’s spot featuring the song (in multiple languages) was one of the most controversial commercials of the night, in large part because the “diversity ad,” which includes two gay dads, is a direct response to the terrible PR the company has received ahead of the Sochi Olympics. Next week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars is a black and white noir throwback written and directed by Joseph Dougherty, who you also know as the PLL writer/producer who gave us Paige and Emily’s now-famous pool scene and the guy who won an AfterEllen Visibility Award last year for one of his two Paily-centric Amazon Worlds novellas. Yes, the Paily is strong again in “Shadow Play.” But before we talk about that, let’s talk about how Shay Mitchell said, “You could literally stop [the noir episode] at any point and blow it up on a big poster and it’s going to be stunning.” And then she proved it.

Over at BuzzFeed, Chris Geidner reports that Edith Windsor‘s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, is taking her DOMA-overturning expertise to Utah to straighten out the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals:
In a Friday filing at the court, Roberta Kaplan argued on behalf of the couples that they should be allowed to intervene in the appeal – a move they acknowledge would be an “exceptional case” – in order to raise questions about other portions of Utah law that prevent recognition of same-sex couples. Under the rules of the 10th Circuit, they note, it is possible that the court would not allow them to make arguments about those other provisions if they simply submitted amici curiae, or “friends of the court,” briefs.You get ’em, Kaplan!
Check out this amazing bit of casting news: Penny Marshall (of Laverne and Shirley fame!) and Lorraine Bracco (of The Sopranos and Rizzoli & Isles fame) are going to play a lesbian couple on Fox’s new John Mulaney/Lorne Michaels comedy, Mulaney. According to TV Line, the couple – named Tutti and Vaughn – will make their first appearance in episode two. Sclemeel, schlemazel, awesomesauce incorporated!
Queerty has posted a lovely, insightful new interview with Mary Lambert in which she talks about being the voice of the new gay anthem, growing up in a conservative Christian church, singing with Madonna, and how the kids in her school mocked her for having a gay mom.
Oh, they started calling me a lesbian. Of course some of the kids were cool, but in general I was a total weirdo. I was just a weird kid anyway. I know a lot of people say “I was so awkward” and they’re usually not. I was really, really weird. [Laughs] I was one of those kids that talk to themselves. I didn’t own a pair of jeans until I was 15. I only wore stretch pants every day. Looking back now I was way ahead of the game. It was never an option to me that I could be gay because I’d never met anyone my age who was gay. As soon as I realized it I thought, Oh my God, could I really be gay? Is this a thing? I had journal entries from when I was 13 in which I wrote, “I might be gay. I am attracted to women. I do like kissing my friends.
