“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (10.10): Release the YaYas

Based on the promos for this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, I thought it was going to be one of those episodes where everyone is banging in every corner of the hospital. However, there was nary a bang in sight! Way to fake us out Grey’s. However, they did do one thing that I find rather impressive. Grey’s somehow turned one of the most unappealing characters into someone we could sympathize with, and maybe-if we are willing to admit it-grow to like. More on that later though.

It’s morning in Seattle and Bailey is going through one of her many rituals, while Ben looks watches, concerned about this sudden change in his wife. Arizona wakes up, not in her hotel room, but in her and Callie’s apartment! The downside? She’s sleeping on the couch. The plus side? Her leg is on the coffee table, right next to what I assume is the Collected Works of Annie Liebovitz and a pile of Wonder Woman coasters. Callie emerges from the bedroom and wishes her good morning as she breezes past. You can tell by the look on Arizona’s face that this isn’t exactly how she pictured their reunion.

Meredith and Derek are being adorable, and baby Bailey has on a hat with little mouse ears. Stop being so cute McDreamys! Derek was inspired by toothpaste or cream of wheat or something, because he’s an actual genius, so he’s off to put his noodle to work.

At the hospital, Emma is dropping off more baked goods for Owen. (Someone has been watching too much Pioneer Woman on her time off.) Callie and April watch them interact, cooing about how cute they are as a couple. When Cristina joins them, she tries to play it cool, but we all know she’s really missing Owen.

When Meredith arrives, Jo approaches her about Richard. He wants another stress test (since he failed the last one), so Meredith agrees to check on him. Mer is less than thrilled to find out that Stephanie is on her service again. Apparently Meredith is still pissed off about Stephanie taking Alex’s side a few days prior. Their patient is a woman suffering from end stage cancer. Meredith and Stephanie have the difficult task of telling the woman and her husband that all they can really do now is try to alleviate her pain. The patient is devastated but agrees to the treatment that will help her live out her days in more comfort.

Cristina’s patient, the Glazier baby from last week, is still alive but struggling. Alex is now working the case with her. Cristina, who hasn’t been able to spill her guts about her Owen feelings to Meredith, tries to talk with Alex. He woke up on the prudish side of the bed this morning and doesn’t really want to hear about Cristina’s lack of sexcapades. He does suggest that she go find another warm body to have fun with, and refers to her breasts as “yayas.” Ross overhears, but he has bigger issues. The conduit they made for the baby-the one that got Cristina in hot water with Meredith-is contaminated. They need to make a new one or the baby won’t make it.

April glides in to the lounge like a regular Season 6 Arizona Robbins, and slips Stephanie a wedding invitation. She makes sure to tell her that it includes a plus one. A Jackson Avery-shaped plus one.

Ben and Bailey arrive and are bickering about Bailey’s OCD. They have differing opinions. Ben thinks she should talk to someone about it and Bailey thinks Ben should shut the hell up.

Through the emergency room doors comes a little girl, accompanied by her babysitter. The little girl was riding her scooter and was hit by a car. Owen, Arizona and Leah are on the case, but when Owen instructs them to get Callie involved, things turn awkward. This cannot end well, and that’s what Leah fears. Hide the bone saws, y’all. When Arizona and Leah are finally alone, Arizona softens a bit. Leah questions if Arizona and Callie are really getting back together, and Arizona tells her yes. She also kindly dissuades her from being that girl, waiting around for the married doctor’s marriage to fall apart. It’s always easy peasy until it’s not, right Leah?

Stephanie is checking on her patients when she overhears the women with terminal cancer talking to another woman. She’s basically auditioning women to take her place in her man’s life. That man, however, is not her husband. His name is Stan.

Derek and Ben sure are committed to continuing their bromance from earlier in the season. Derek confesses that his research is actually amping up, rather than making his life less complicated. He’s worried Meredith is going to kill him since he promised to take a step back so she could shine. Ben, takes this as an invitation to talk about his wife and her troubling behaviors. He tells Derek about the OCD and how he thinks it stems from the hole in the glove incident. Unfortunately for Ben and Bailey, Derek isn’t able to just sit back and listen. He’s one of the owners of this hospital and must report the possible “misconduct” to Owen. Ben naturally feels awful. Just because you sew fairy wings for a guy, doesn’t make him your confidante, Ben.

Cristina and Ross mull over what to do about the faulty conduit. Sure, Meredith will be pissed but hello! Babies needing new baby heart conduits. Ross reaches into the depths of his sharkiness and propositions Cristina and her yayas. She shoots him her absolute best Cristina, “are you fucking kidding me” face. He goes on to say that he finds her attractive and she tells him to hushabye. Thank god.

Owen and Emma, like all teenage couples, are all awkward and timid when it comes to discussing important things like sex and candied yams. Oh wait, I’m sorry, they are actually grown adults who are allowed to cut into people with scalpels and should really get their shit together. Anyway, the two of them are sitting making googley eyes at each other when Meredith comes in to take a bite of Emma’s muffin. Hey oh! The topic of Thanksgiving comes up and it turns out that nobody has plans! Meredith doesn’t cook because she’s busy doing everything else, but offers up her kitchen to Emma’s heavenly delights.

Stephanie runs into the other second years and asks if anyone else got invited to April’s wedding. Negatory they say! Ross bursts in and tells Stephanie he’s co-opting their printer again because sick babies trump all. Stephanie chases after him because Meredith is already pissed off at her and this will just throw her over the edge. Meredith herself is wrapped up in Richard, who wants out of the hospital like yesterday. He wants to go home, and not to some assisted facility while he fully recovers.

Arizona and Callie find themselves alone in the X-ray room. Things have thawed a little, and Callie is much more receptive to Arizona than she has been for months. Arizona decides that she should come clean so there are no more secrets between them. She tells Callie that she was with someone while they were separated. Callie isn’t happy about it, but this is Calzona 2.0, and she at least appreciates Arizona’s honesty and thanks her. Arizona opens the floor to questions, and at first Callie is hesitant. She asks if it was more than once? Yes. We are talking ten plus times here. For a moment things get tense, but they work through it. Callie asks if it is over and without hesitation, Arizona says yes. Completely over. Arizona can’t help but wonder if Callie was with other people. Callie tells her no, the only person she spent any quality time with was herself. She needed to remember how to have fun again. It’s a big step for both of them. This is the level of honesty and communication that had been missing since the accident, long before the affair. Arizona asks if she can hug Callie, and she says yes. Their embrace is tentative at first, then warm. I missed yous are exchanged. The moment is broken when Leah bursts through the door, not realizing what she’s walking in on.

Stephanie manages to hunt down Meredith and tell her about Ross and the 3D Printer (which would make a great children’s book). Meredith is ablaze with anger and tears off to find him and Cristina.

At the nurse’s station, Derek is trying to find Owen, followed by a miserable Ben. It’s like Grand Central Station, with that patented Shonda rapid-fire dialogue. To summarize, Thanksgiving dinner at the Mer/Der Mansion is about to get crowded.

What isn’t crowded is the stairwell, were Leah sits forlornly. Stephanie approaches her and Leah admits to feeling like total shit about Arizona. She’s also self-aware enough to know that this is a pattern she’s developed. Seeking out the wrong people to get involved with, then falling apart when she inevitably gets dumped. It’s a big moment when you can look at your own major shortfalls and know that you want to change, even when you don’t know how. Stephanie tells her to pick herself up, dust off her chin dimple, and be the badass surgeon she knows she can be.

Owen, feeling guilty about spending Thanksgiving with his new lady, tries to gauge Cristina’s plans. She’s thinking of working a double because pumpkin pie is bullshit! (Just kidding, it’s ambrosia) She tells him that it’s ok to tell her that he’s spending the holiday with Emma, which he does. He fails to correct her when she assumes that it’s just the two of them and a big ass turkey.

Taking Stephanie’s advice, Leah tries to go about being a great doctor. She updates and tries to comfort the babysitter about the little girl, but the young woman is inconsolable. She is worried that the little girl’s parents are going to blame her for the accident. When Leah tries to contest, the babysitter tells her that there is always someone who gets blamed. Since she’s the one on the outside, it’s bound to be her. The words fall on Leah like golf ball sized hail in a thunderstorm.

Stephanie is really bummed that Meredith Grey is angry at her, so she seeks out Jackson who gives her a pep talk. She in turn tells him about the invitation to April’s wedding.

Alex and Jo finally have a little time along to snorgle and drool over each other. He tells her that she’s invited to Thanksgiving at Meredith’s but she declines the invite so she can stay at the hospital. Alex doesn’t want to go if Jo can’t make it, so he suggests a rotisserie chicken in the car, perhaps followed by some holiday banging. (OK, I added that last part.)

The husband of the cancer patient tells his wife that he went ahead and told Stan about her condition. She’s very upset because she’s been using whatever energy she has left in an attempt to spare him pain. Later, Stephanie gets the husband alone. He tells her that he and his wife were happy for a long time. Then one day they weren’t. They decided to find passion outside their marriage, but loved each other and stayed companions. He’s worried about Stan because they both love his wife and know how hard it will be for both of them to lose her. It’s kind of nice to see polyamory presented in such a positive way here.

Derek finally has a serious conversation with Owen about Bailey and the OCD. When Owen decides to pull Bailey off the surgical floor, Ben knows that he really messed things up for her. When he sees Bailey, Ben admits to telling Derek. She is beyond furious. Not just furious. Betrayed.

Meredith and Cristina get into the mix about the printer. Meredith explains that she will lose her funding if this part of the trial goes kaput. Cristina asks her to follow her and shows her the baby in need of the conduit. Cristina explains that this is about little baby, not her. Little Nathan is real, not some study. Meredith calls shenanigans, saying that just because she’s a mother doesn’t mean she can’t reason. She accuses Cristina of screwing with her study because she’s so obsessed with her own success and glory.

When Emma stops by to visit Owen, he drops the news that instead of cooking for four, she’ll be cooking for closer to sixteen. The boiled potatoes on this guy! In his defense, he offers to slice, dice, chop and mash anything she tells him to. He tries to disseminate how Emma would feel about Cristina being there. She’s remarkably cool about it, which leads me to believe she’ll be gone in a few episodes. She reminds him though that while she may be cooking, it’s Meredith and Derek’s house and they are the ones he should be asking.

Callie, Arizona and Leah are all in surgery together and initially all is going well. Callie is coaching Leah through an ortho-procedure. Things take a turn for the worse when Leah accidentally drills too far and goes right through the little girls leg, into the table. Callie tries to talk her down, but Leah’s pent up nerves get the best of her. While Callie tries to push her to work through it, but Leah asks Arizona steps in. Arizona tells Callie to give Leah a little space. This moment of tenderness smacks Callie into realization. She instantly knows from Arizona’s words and body language that Leah was the one, and asks if it’s true. Leah is the ten plus times?! Callie angrily cleans up Leah’s surgical mess, and everyone feels awful. Of course Callie would find out while she’s elbow deep in the OR. However, I don’t know whom Callie thought Arizona might be dating. No one ever dates anyone outside of the hospital, so she was bound to run into it sooner or later.

Leah runs out of the OR followed by Arizona. Leah confronts Arizona about not telling Callie it was her. Arizona defends herself and tells her that this is her marriage they are talking about. Leah reminds Arizona that she’s not the only one with something to lose. Her career is important too and now Callie blames her for her pain, which could jeopardize Leah’s place there. When Arizona tries to reason with her, Leah says that Callie loves Arizona so of course the blame will lie with her. She storms out.

Jackson decides to confront April about the wedding invitation. She launches into a speech about how she technically didn’t invite him to spare Matthew’s feelings, but wants Jackson to be there. April needs Jackson’s blessing on her marriage, which he promises her she has. He doesn’t think it’s such a good idea that he be there though.

Stan, the dying woman’s lover shows up and he is distraught. He and the husband watch through the window as she auditions another woman to replace her. Stan cries out that no one can replace her, and he and the husband hug each other, sharing their mutual grief.

The heart conduit baby is fading fast and Cristina and Alex scramble to keep him alive. Once he’s in the clear, Alex asks if Cristina is planning to screw around with Ross. Her response is nothing less than Shakespearian. “Shall I compare thee to a baby seal?” No, she replies, she is not going to sleep with Ross. When it comes to the conduit, Alex is clearly on Team Cristina.

Richard is so eager to get out of the hospital that he’s really pushing the limits on his stress test. He keeps telling Jo to keep amping it up it, which she does reluctantly. Richard, not willing to accept his own limits, goes too far and ends up falling off the treadmill and breaking a couple ribs.

As Bailey prepares to begin a surgery, Owen and Meredith come in to stop her. When Owen confronts her, Bailey denies having any problem. Owen asks Meredith to move one of Bailey’s surgical instruments out of place. Then another. The disorder upsets Bailey, and Owen orders her off the floor. You can almost heart Bailey’s heart break.

The little girl’s parents have finally showed up, and the babysitter was right. They do blame her for the accident. Leah, whose heart grows a little bigger and stronger by the day, offers to stay with her.

Stephanie and Jackson meet up and he informs her that he will not be attending April’s wedding. She tells him about Stan and the husband, and says if these two guys can be ok with each other, why can’t you go to April’s wedding? Jackson promises that just because things are awkward, doesn’t mean they aren’t over. Jackson is wise and has obviously spent some time in lesbian bars.

Meredith confronts Cristina and Ross over the printer. She yells at Cristina with abandon, telling her that she’s not Christ incarnate. If Meredith doesn’t get her project done, she risks losing her grant. She continues to berate Cristina, who silently accepts it until Ross steps in, in big way. He tells Meredith to stand down, and back the hell off. She accuses him of hero worship and he goes right back at her, saying she’s made this about their friendship. He doesn’t back down telling her that she will get the damn printer tomorrow. Meredith stomps out, and Ross apologies for overstepping his bounds. Cristina isn’t upset with him and proves it by kissing him full on the mouth.

Callie and Arizona finally get a moment to lesbian process what happened earlier. Callie asks Arizona if she can’t keep it in her pants, can she at least keep it out of the hospital? Arizona stands up for herself and tells Callie she came back and wants to be back, but not to be Callie’s emotional whipping boy. She wants back into Callie’s life and her bed. I was really hungry when I watched the scene, but this is basically the gist.

Arizona: Um, you came to my door last week and invited me to come back and share your banana split, but all I got was a scoop of vanilla with that pineapple gloop that nobody really likes, but has to suffer through anyway. It’s tedious and unsatisfying. Where is the rest of the banana split? I want banana split.

Callie: Well you see, the last time I let you share my banana split, you dropped it in the proverbial dirt. So this time, I’m being much more cautious. Once we start communicating and having some fun together, then we can move on to the chocolate. And then, when the sparks begin to organically fly between us again, then you can have some of my sweet, sweet strawberry. Eventually, I hope that we can rebuild the trust between us, which will be the bananas and learn to forgive each other for all the pain we’ve caused by going crazy with the whipped cream. And maybe one day, if we are lucky-like Mer/Der lucky-our marriage will thrive and our mutual love and respect will be the cherry on top. Until then, get your sweet tooth under control and eat your vanilla and pineapple sauce, because that’s all I can give you right now.

Arizona: *grumble grumble* Fine.

Bailey and Ben continue fighting at home. He’s upset at himself and worried about Bailey but he lashes out saying that he should have told Owen himself. Bailey becomes so upset and frustrated that she literally tosses a chair. Unlike Ben, surgery is everything to her. If that’s taken away, who will she be?

In Richard’s room, he’s back to being bed-bound. Luckily he has a bunch of interns to keep him company. They decide to order some Thanksgiving KFC (extra crispy!), and debate the merits of the side dishes. Everyone wants extra biscuits.

Merdith is still steaming while she unloads her tale of woe on Derek, comparing Cristina to Regina George. Because he is a smart husband, he keeps his dissenting opinions to himself while Meredith simmers. Owen pops by to say that all is good with Emma and Cristina can come to Thanksgiving! He’s like a happy puppy. Meredith doesn’t want her there though. Sad Owen puppy. Cristina walks by and it’s chillier than ever. You guys, does this mean that Meredith and Cristina are breaking up? Let’s dance it out.
