Morning Brew — Lady Gaga gets her “SNL” hosting date

Good morning, Brewbies! Go ahead and mark your calendars for November 16th because NBC has finally announced that’s the night Lady Gaga will be doing double-duty for the first time ever on Saturday Night Live. Openly gay Food Network superstar Anne Burrell stopped by The Talk yesterday to help the ladies – including Sara Gilbert in a Peter Pan costume! – whip up a Halloween feast. Yes, Burrell was dressed like a mermaid. Yes, she made grilled cheese sandwiches (because if you say you don’t like them, you’re a liar). Yes, she made delicious-looking grown-up cocktails with pixie dust. Yes, she’s awesome. Still interested in talking about All That Sex in Blue is the Warmest Color? Well, good news: The Internet’s still going strong! Yesterday, Vulture posted a really interesting op-ed about the film’s sex scenes in context of all the other scissoring-situations we’ve seen on film over the years.

Prior to [Personal Best], with the exception maybe of the 1968 French art-house film Therese and Isabelle, in which a woman visits her old boarding school and has flashbacks to the girl she fell in love with as a teen, lesbian relationships were almost always doomed – mental hospitals (see 1964’s Lilith) were one favorite setting – and lesbians were cast as either predators or victims, some of whom died by film’s end.
It’s a good read, though I’ve gotta say: Having now seen the film with my own eyeballs, the sex stuff was the least interesting part of a beautiful, devastating, aching, emotionally authentic movie.

Oh, and P.S. get ready to see a lot more of Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos as awards season draws near. They’re the new faces of Miu Miu, for starters.

It’s been a good week for gay activism on The Rachel Maddow Show. First she took E.W. Jackson to task for his homophobia. And last night, she presented Secretary Chuck Hagel‘s call to action for equality for gay service members’ spouses, regardless of whether or not same-sex marriage is legal in the states where they reside.
