Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever (June 29, 2007)

KIRAN, MEET KAREN Canadian actress Lisa Ray has been cast as the other lead in Manan Katohora’s romantic lesbian drama When Kiran Met Karen, about an Indian-American actress in New York who falls in love with her female co-star while shooting a film in which she plays a lesbian.

Now meet Dana, “Kirsten’s misanthropic, cynical, and very butch wife”:

According to her bio, “Dana is in touch with her Jewish heritage, but it’s a political relationship, not a spiritual one. Despite her angry veneer, her hope is to make this world an all-out celebration of diversity and bully objectors into doing the same thing … Dana’s ideal weekend starts with putting on a CD by her favorite band, the Lesbohemians, burning some incense, and adding a fourth garage to their house.”

OK, that last line really made me laugh, since it’s a running joke at our house that it’s never a good idea to leave Lori at home alone with a power drill and too much free time.

But I’m a little bummed that we’re getting yet another lesbian story line that revolves around getting pregnant – and on a show written by a gay man, no less.

On the other hand, the insemination story line seems to be used primarily as a jumping-off point to explore the characters’ interpersonal relationships. And the whole point of this show is to make fun of LGBT stereotypes by taking them to their extreme, so no one – not even the cat – is spared.

THIS COULD BE AN OVERDOSE OF BUFFY NEWS – IF THAT WERE ACTUALLY POSSIBLE There’s Buffy news galore this week! The fourth issue of the new Buffy comic series was released earlier this month, and in it we get a hint that the person secretly in love with Buffy may be the slayer Satsu, because she loans Buffy her chapstick and it tastes like cinnamon (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, read this). But knowing Joss, it could just as easily be a misdirect. Here’s the revealing panel: Unfortunately, the next issue of the comic won’t be out until August, and it’s most likely going to be Willow-free, since it’s focused on one of the slayers who acts as a Buffy decoy. (That’s what I need, my own decoy! One who could go to work for me while I stay home and watch Buffy marathons.) Here’s the cover art for No. 5, featuring the decoy slayer about to rip off her Buffy mask: And a cool panel from it, too: Earlier this week, Dark Horse announced the July 25th release of a new 300-page compendium of comics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus, Vol. 1, that tells the story of Buffy before she came to Sunnydale.

Volume 2, which will be released in September, will compile Buffy comics that correspond with the first three seasons of the show. In other words: It’s got Willow.

Other cool Buffy news: The Buffy Musical Big Screen Extravaganza is on tour around the country, hitting cities from Seattle to Atlanta to Detroit. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Think a midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show-type screening with Buffy props, crowd interaction and a live cast (The Uncool Kids) acting out scenes from the show’s sixth-season musical episode, “Once More With Feeling”: Check out the show’s MySpace profile and the official site, buffysings.com, for tour dates. And speaking of musicals …

COMING SOON: BAD GIRLS ACTION FIGURES AND BAD GIRLS: THE ANIMATED MOVIE A musical version of the long-running British series Bad Girls, which is currently airing in the U.S. on Logo, debuted in July 2006 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds and is now moving to London’s Garrick Theatre in September.

Yes, it’s true: Lesbians are coming to London’s tony West End.

Written by the creators of the television series, the musical version of Bad Girls is based around some of the core characters from the first season of the TV show:

The musical revolves around the efforts of idealistic new Wing Governor Helen Stewart (played by Laura Rogers) to make improvements on G Wing, but old guard officers, including Jim Fenner and his sidekick Sylvia Hollamby, stand in her way. A death on the ward leads to an angry protest which also forces Stewart and her love interest inmate Nikki Wade (Caroline Head) onto their opposite sides of the bars. Other featured inmate characters include Shell Dockley and her runner Denny Blood, the Two Julies, and the top dog and missus to the king of gangland, Yvonne Atkins.
Here are a few photos from the production (the first is of Nikki and Helen): The musical’s production staff – including the writers, director and composer – is composed of almost all women and includes several lesbians. This is also, as far as anyone can determine, the first major musical ever to feature (not just include) a lesbian romance.

The press event included a staged kiss between the actors playing Helen and Nikki, which left us a little conflicted: Is it exploitive to have straight actors staging a lesbian kiss at a press conference , or is it progressive to show such support for a musical with lesbian leads?

Either way, we’ll definitely be reviewing the production on AfterEllen.com when it opens in September. In the meantime, get more photos and info at badgirlsthemusical.com.

In case there are any playwrights reading this column, I’d like to take this opportunity to suggest other potential lesbian bad girl stories ripe for the stage: Monster: The Musical; Papi’s Circles of Love, with choreography by Vanilla Ice; Wild Things: The Musical starring Neve Campbell and Denise Richards; and Five by Five: The Epic Love Story of Buffy and Faith.

LESBIAN QUOTES OF THE WEEK “Well, I was the most nervous about you. I didn’t want to be the sleazy director that was like, ‘And now I’ll be playing your girlfriend.'” – Chutney Popcorn director Nisha Ganatra to Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan), when Hennessy suggested Ganatra play the lead role of Reena (AfterEllen.com)

“I didn’t necessarily feel like that character but in one of the scenes where we’re in, we’re doing speed dating, at the end of the scene, she was very sweet, she was like ‘you know, that was really sexy’ and I said ‘oh, thank you.’ And there was a love scene. There were some nerves there, absolutely but everybody was really great and very professional on the set and it was definitely a good experience. It was fun.” Erica Cerra about playing Uta the vampire on The L Word (The Scifi World)

“So you go with your partner or girlfriends to a bad lesbian film – so what? You went, you got to be around your ‘sisters,’ you went out for cocktails afterwards and complained – didn’t you still have fun?” – Filmmaker J.D. Disalvatore (AfterEllen.com)

NOTHING SAYS “I LOVE YOU” LIKE SETTING YOUR EX-GIRLFRIEND UP WITH GUYS Tonight kicks off the U.S. premiere of the second-half of Degrassi: The Next Generation‘s sixth season – and this is one season you definitely won’t want to miss! When we last left off, Paige (Lauren Collins) was struggling to keep her grades up at her fancy, faraway college, and Alex (Deanna Casaluce) found a girlfriend named Carla.

Things start to heat up between Alex and Paige again in the second half of the season.

Tune into the premiere on The N this Friday at 8 p.m. to see how long Paige will stay in denial, and read this new TVGuide.com interview with the series creator about the season and Palex.

LADY LIBERTY IN HANDCUFFS? WELL, AS LONG AS IT’S CONSENSUAL … Maple Palm, the independent movie about gays and immigration law, comes out on DVD next week. The official plot is described as, “A lesbian couple of fifteen years lives with the secret that one is an illegal immigrant. With no legal way to protect their relationship, they live in fear of deportation. After a visit to the Statue of Liberty, the girls return home to L.A.; unaware that this icon of freedom, was about to strip them of their own.”

OK, I’m all for a film that explores the inequality of our laws when it comes to protecting our partners, but the trailer seems more like a bad lesbian movie parody. Lesbian lovers feeding each other grapes? Check! An angsty soundtrack by a throaty-voiced female rocker? Check! A main character who never seems to change out of her white ribbed tank top? Check! Oppression at the hands of The Man? Check! Check! Check!

Quick, someone commit suicide or go straight!

All kidding aside, it’s a big subject to tackle, and kudos to the filmmaker(s) for taking it on. I just really, really hope that the film wraps up without anyone making a concluding political speech into the camera while wearing a unitard. (Yeah, I’m talking about you, Girl Play!)

ALL MY LONG-DISTANCE PHONE CALLS Pine Valley’s no-longer-resident lesbian is returning to All My Children for one day only: Tuesday, Aug. 14, according to TVGuide.com, who spoke with the soap’s new head writers, Barbara J. Esensten and James Harmon Brown about the “big story” Eden Riegel‘s Bianca will be returning for:

The writers remained vague about the details of this upcoming storyline, but they dropped a few hints. “It’s a big story,” Esensten said. “It interweaves everybody on the canvas. Everybody has an interest in what happens during this event. But I’ll tell you this much: It’s not going to be an explosion or a serial killer.”

“We’re retiring serial killers for awhile,” Brown added with a chuckle.

“This event involves Jack, Erica, Kendall, Ryan and Zach,” Brown continued. “Because of what happens to these core characters, there will be a domino effect that affects their lives – and just about everyone else’s – for the next year and beyond.”

Notice Bianca’s not listed among the people whom this big event involves? It’s because her “appearance” just consists of a long-distance call from Paris, where she now lives with her daughter, Miranda. Oh well, I guess it’s better than no Bianca at all.

In the interview, the new writers also reiterated the impossibility of recasting Bianca. “We love the character of Bianca. But I think [Riegel] is so definitively Bianca that the idea of recasting the character is just not an option.” Well, at least they got that right.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME? WHO’S YOUR DADDY? IS HE RICH LIKE ME? Latina pop singer/songwriter/actress Valeria, whose first hit was “Ooh La La” from the Legally Blonde soundtrack, and who romanced Ashton Kutcher in Just Married, has just released the music video for her new song “Girl I Told Ya,” and it’s very, very gay. In a very good way.

Wouldn’t it be great if her “daddy” was Jackie Warner?

No clue what Valeria’s sexual orientation is, but her video for “Ooh La La” has a few subtle lesbian moments, too, so at least we know she’s lesbian-friendly! Learn more about Valeria on her MySpace page.

LUPO A LESBIAN? EUREKA! In a Q&A with the cast of the quirky drama series Eureka during the Sci Fi Channel’s press tour this week, actress Erica Cerra said that her character, Deputy Jo Lupo, is “coming out of the closet” this season (which debuts July 10). Josefina “Jo” Lupo is described as “Eureka’s deputy sheriff, a New Jersey girl and former U.S. Army Ranger.” From the way Cerra made the coming-out comment on the panel, it’s not entirely clear if she was telling the truth or just joking around, but Sy Fy Portal’s taking it seriously, and it would make sense for her character. Here’s her official photo: If Erica looks vaguely familiar, it’s because she played Alice’s vampire lover Uta in the third season of The L Word: Quite a difference, huh? I guess my mother was right: When it comes to looking your best, makeup and fangs make all the difference!

GIRLS ON FILM … AND BY “FILM,” WE MEAN REALLY LOW-TECH WEBCAMS As many of you are aware, I conned my girlfriend Lori into doing a TV roundup video blog with me last weekend, and we had so much fun (and received such nice encouragement from y’all) that we’re going to do it every weekend. Well, most weekends, anyway. So look for a new video from us on the blog late Saturday or Sunday morning discussing what we watched this week (and probably going off on random tangents like we did this time about Maeve Quinlan’s clothes, Renee O’Connor’s hair, and how Lori never listens to me). In related news, we’re going to be announcing a new contest soon to find other talented AfterEllen.com video bloggers! The short version is that you can vlog about anything pop culture-related; you have to be willing to do it weekly if you win; and yes, there’s a small monthly stipend involved, but you’d really just be doing this to help launch your celezbian career. To qualify, all you need is a webcam, a sense of humor and at least one lesbian or bisexual woman, so start corralling your (girl)friends and brainstorming topic ideas now, and we’ll give you all the details the week of July 9th.

For those of you creative types who prefer the typewriter over the camera, AfterEllen.com is also searching for a witty, smart and sassy writer to join our team of freelancers. We’re looking for someone who can write articles like “Karman and Malinda’s Top 11 Lesbian Fashion Accessories” and “The Top 8 Celezbrity Embarrassing Moments.” In other words, fun but pointed humor about lesbians and bisexual women in entertainment and the media. This doesn’t mean we’re only looking for comedians – we’re looking for professional writers who are meticulous about their facts, well-versed in lesbian entertainment, and chock full of new ideas. This gig would be a continuing one, with at least one article per month to begin (and many opportunities for fame and glory in the future). If you think you fit the bill, please send your resume and two published clips of your writing to [email protected].

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! Season 3 of The L Word will be released on DVD in the U.K. on September 7th.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which stars out actress Sarah Paulson and aired its last episode last night, will be released on DVD on Oct. 16.

The contestants for CBS’ Big Brother 8 have been revealed, and while there’s a gay man among them, there don’t appear to be any lesbians.

Gay.com is running a poll asking readers which actress they’d like to see play gay, and so far Kate Winslet is leading by a landslide. Hey, there’s a reason she was No. 3 on our Hot 100!

Emmy winning lesbian Maile Flanagan is the voice of Colin in the new Simpsons movie.

Yet another reason to like Army Wives: Creator Katherine Fugate wants to write in a two-parter for Renee O’Connor next season. But you know how it is – creators are often overruled by network execs, so go to Lifetime’s Army Wives message board and let them know how much you want Renee (on the show, I mean!).

The AfterEllen.com staff is taking the the Fourth of July off (next Wednesday), so you won’t see any new content on the site that day. But we’ll be posting new articles and blog posts every other day next week. Because you know what they say – no rest for the wicked!

That’s it for this week! Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

The 35-year-old Ray – who is half Indian and half Polish, speaks Hindi fluently as a second language, and is best known for starring in the comedy Bollywood/Hollywood – will play Karen, the female co-star Kiran falls for. Here are a few photos of Lisa:

As we reported back in December, the lead role of Kiran will be played by American actress Purva Bedi:

Looks like a great pairing and a great premise – kinda similar to what happened on the set of Bloodrayne. Allegedly. Sure, neither actress was technically playing a lesbian in that movie, but have you seen

Completely unrelated but inspired by the movie’s title, I wanted to highlight this photoshopped creation by AfterEllen.com member trihardest that was posted in our forum recently:

Meg Ryan and Leisha Hailey? I’ll have what she’s having!

PORTIA PLAYS A LESBIAN! ROSIE KEEPS HER MOUTH SHUT! CLEARLY, THE APOCALPYSE IS UPON US. FX’s gory plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck is always looking for ways to up the ante, and it looks like next season is all about the lesbians. In addition to lesbian regular Dr. Liz Cruz (Roma Maffia), Rosie O’Donnell is reprising her role as lottery winner Dawn Budge, who this season gets romantically involved with a TV producer played by Oliver Platt.

Here’s the gossip on Rosie’s role, according to an NBC blogger:

Rosie will come to Dr. McNamara and Dr. Troy for a procedure where she will end up having to have her mouth sewn shut! She’s forced to communicate with them through a dry erase board. She’ll appear in episode four, which will begin filming in mid to late July. They want her back for more episodes after this but they have not been written yet and need to check Rosie’s schedule.
Then comes the news that Portia de Rossi has signed on to Nip/Tuck in a recurring role as a manipulative lesbian mother whose teen daughter wants to have plastic surgery. Yes, that’s right, Portia will actually be playing a lesbian. Hopefully her character won’t lose a kidney. And if she ends up sleeping with someone at McNamara-Troy, it better be Liz, not Christian!

HAPPIEST GAY STEREOTYPES The official site for Rick & Steve, Logo’s new animated series debuting July 10th, now has bios for the lesbian characters, and I have to admit, they’re pretty clever. First, we have Kirsten, Rick’s best friend and a lipstick lesbian: According to her bio, Kirsten “hopes to make a living from her art some day, it’s been really promising, she’s had shows in three espresso shops. She met Dana three years ago when their U-Hauls collided at a busy intersection. They moved in together 27 minutes later. Kirsten’s naive optimism and passionate philanthropy make her both a dependable friend and an easy target. While you can always count on her to lend a hand, her penchant for neurosis sometimes renders her useless. Kirsten’s ideal weekend is spent exploring her vagina and reading self-help books.”
