Margaret Cho queers up “Dancing with the Stars”

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars isn’t just back, it’s better – with the addition of queer stand-up comic, actress, singer and songwriter Margaret Cho. Paired with Louis Van Amstel, Cho’s first dance this week, the Viennese Waltz, didn’t impress the judges and the team wound up tying for last place when the judges were finished voting.

But Cho wound up having a lucky week – she survived elimination and her Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva was picked up for a third season. Former Knight Rider and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, however, wasn’t as lucky as he was the first to be eliminated from the reality competition show.

Cho has agreed to answer all our questions (yours, too!) while she’s on the hit show. Here’s what she had to say about her first dance.

AfterEllen.com: How nervous were you going into Week 1?

Margaret Cho: Super nervous! But then again, I’m not known to be a graceful person so I didn’t have a lot of pressure on me to do well! But I was still sh—ing a brick, seriously.

AE: What was the hardest part when it came to rehearsing the Viennese Waltz?

MC: The hold and the posture and conquering the fear of stepping on feet.

AE: How are you handling the judges’ criticism, especially when they took a shot at your adding comedy to the routine?

MC: All I heard was they said they thought I could actually dance.

AE: Will we see more comedy in your upcoming performances?

MC: I know I still have to be myself no matter what, but I really am going to dance my ass off.

AE: Going into tonight’s Week 2, you’ll be dancing the jive to Blondie’s “Dreaming.” How was rehearsing to that? At any point did you imagine yourself dancing with Debbie Harry?

MC: Yes, I love Debbie so visualizing her in my routine was perfect. It’s one of my very favorite songs and Debbie is a friend of mine so it felt very special and exciting to dance to it!

AE: Were you surprised David Hasselhoff was eliminated?

MC: Yes! He’s an icon and I really enjoyed watching him. He’s such a great entertainer! I still can’t believe he’s gone.

AE: Can you dance to Tegan and Sara?

MC: I’d love to!

AE: Will you hit on Bristol Palin?

MC: She much too young for me — just a teenager! But she says her mom will be there this week!
