Ladies in red

New York’s Fashion Week isn’t the place you’d expect to see healthy representations of the female form. Or models having fun. Or models showing any emotion whatsoever. But lo and behold, the fashionistas do have heart. Fashion Week started with a crimson flash at the annual Red Dress Heart Truth show Friday. Instead of surrogate coat hangers, I mean models, a diverse array of celebrities strutted their stuff on the catwalk.

Among the stars were out tennis legend Billie Jean King, Oscar winner and L Word actress Marlee Matlin, former Cosby mom Phylicia RashÀÔÇ×?üd, American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee, race-car driver Danica Patrick and ubiquitous chef/talk show host/chronic giggler Rachel Ray. The event was part of the Red Dress project, a federal initiative that raises awareness about heart disease in women.

The best of the ladies in red:

Billie, sporting a long red jacket, pants and sneakers, got the most enthusiastic response from the crowd. Look at girlfriend go: Marlee, who also signed the National Anthem at the Super Bowl this weekend, enjoyed her little turn on the catwalk. Though I’m not sure that dress was doing her any favors: Angela Bassett worked it like she owned it, as expected. Her arms make me go wobbly in the knees: Lauren Hutton, at 63, was a picture of grace and gap-toothed poise: And the rest:
