Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer” hints at Sapphic romance

Demi Lovato is a known LGBT ally who has shot music videos while performing at LA Pride and has even had a few lesbian rumors surrounding her with Ruby Rose. The singer/actress has a new single called “Cool for the Summer” dropping tomorrow and from the teaser she posted on social media, it appears her song about a fling is about another lady.

You can listen to the song in full, and below are the suggestive but not pronoun-specific lyrics. Besides the double bikini tops in the teaser, the “curiosity” and idea that something “wrong” and “secret” is happening is what has tipped some off to it being about a relationship with another female. If that’s the case, it’s another version of “I Kissed a Girl” in which the theme is curiosity more than a more serious interest in companionship, although that’s arguably the idea of a summer fling.

Certainly there are women whose interests align with “Cool For the Summer,” but when pop stars create hits about bisexuality being less serious or, you know, cool but just “for the summer,” it implies female/female relationships should be (or are) not on the same level of sincerity that a female/male romance might be. Since Demi is an ally, I do not doubt that she would disagree with the sentiment. However, there are at least five songs on the radio at any given time that make mention of girl-on-girl action and it has more to do with sexual experimentation and showiness than anything else. For every “Same Love” with Mary Lambert singing “She keeps me warm,” there’s a Demi Lovato singing “Don’t tell your mother!” One example: Drake in “Truffle Butter” (“I could make two stepsisters wanna fuck each other.”) as well as Nicki Minaj‘s verse (“I might kiss the baddest bitch if you dare me.”)

So while there are plenty of women who see it as some kind of secret indulgent to have a same-sex situation, the idea that it can’t or shouldn’t last through all four seasons is perpetuating the same kind of “phase” mentality queer women fight for legitimacy. As Demi sings, “I just wanna play with you,” which is exactly why so many gay women fear relationships with women they perceive as straight or even bisexual. The song is about sex, not love, and many lesbians didn’t mind the tongue-and-cheek of Katy Perry’s previous cherry chapstick hit. Maybe this will also be adopted by those who would rather hear some kind of lesbian feelings on the radio rather than Little Big Town‘s “Girl Crush” which is about nothing gay at all. (Allegedly.)

Demi Lovato is a huge star, so this single will likely be shoved at us all summer long, and we’ll have to decide if we’re cool with that. [Verse 1] Tell me what you want What you like It’s okay I’mma little curious too Tell me if it’s wrong If it’s right I don’t care I can keep a secret could, you?

[Pre-Chorus] Got my mind on your body And your body on my mind Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite Don’t tell your mother Kiss one another Die for each other We’re cool for the summer (Ha)

[Chorus] Ooh Ooh Take me down into your paradise Don’t be scared cause I’m your body type Just something that we wanna try Cause you and I We’re cool for the summer

[Verse 2] Tell me if I won If I did What’s my prize? I just wanna play with you, too Even if they judge Fuck it all Do the time I just wanna have some fun with you

[Pre-Chorus] Got my mind on your body And your body on my mind Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite Don’t tell your mother Kiss one another Die for each other We’re cool for the summer (Ha)

[Chorus] Ooh Ooh Take me down into your paradise Don’t be scared cause I’m your body type Just something that we wanna try Cause you and I We’re cool for the summer (Ha) We’re cool for the summer We’re cool for the summer

[Bridge] Shhhh…don’t tell your mother Got my mind on your body And your body on my mind Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite

[Chorus] Take me down into your paradise Don’t be scared cause I’m your body type Just something that we wanna try Cause you and I We’re cool for the summer

[Outro] (Take me down) We’re cool for the summer (Don’t be scared) Cause I’m your body type Just something that we wanna try Cause you and I We’re cool for the summer (Ha) Ooh We’re cool for the summer
