Airbnb wants you to know that “Love is Welcome Here”

If you’ve been to Frameline in San Francisco at all during the past week, you may recall seeing a lovely documentary short from Airbnb. Yup, the lodging rental website. They teamed up with the festival to show Love is Welcome Here as pre-roll, but you can watch it online too.

The short features a trans man and his partner, two gay couples and two lesbian couples. They’re all super cute, but they’re all also worried about traveling together.

The film was a partnership with Molecule Films and according to CMO Jonathan Mildenhall, Airbnb employees inspired it.

“I had the vision for the documentary and wanted to convey the Airbnb philosophy that every member of a community, including the LGBT community, should experience a sense of belonging when traveling anywhere,” says Mildenhall.

What I love about the short is its diversity. The film highlights couples old and young, parents, and interracial relationships.

A common fear amongst the couples is how they’ll be received in the places they travel to. For some that means researching a country’s laws and/or its society before making any plans. For others it means bracing yourself for a chilly reception in your own country, or feeling like you have to hide your relationship.

“The LGBT community does experience prejudices that can negatively affect their travel,” says Mildenhall. “Our hope is that with this documentary, we’re contributing to increasing the awareness around this issue and encouraging the need for change.”

Love is Welcome Here is part of Airbnb’s #HostWithPride campaign.
