The Women’s World Cup: Time to Update Your Bracket

This is a recap of Wednesday’s Women’s World Cup games.

Mexico and France 0-5

France came out with a vengeance today and Mexico found themselves in the line of fire. By the end of 90 minutes, France had won 5-0, with their fifth goal being one of the prettiest the tournament has seen so far, a beautiful shot from around 25 yards out by Amandine Henry. With this win, the French took the top spot in Group F, and Mexico will be headed home, as they take fourth.

England and Colombia 2-1

A tight match featured England with their sights on the next round. Colombia was already guaranteed through luckily as the Three Lionesses sank two goals, one a follow up from Karen Carney, the other a penalty converted by Fara Williams. Despite being dow by two goals since the 38th, Colombia came no where near slowing down. Lady Andrade, the Colombian standout, found the net finally in the 94th minute, just before the final whistle. The game would end 2-1 but both teams move on, England taking second and Colombia taking third.

Costa Rica and Brazil 0-1

This match remained scoreless much longer than expected, and only one goal for Brazil would decide it. With this win, they take the top spot in Group E and with three straight wins to build on. The sole goal was found in minute 83 by Raquel Fernandes beating the keeper and finding the low corner. Brazil moves on, but Costa Rica exits, finishing third in the group.

Korea Republic and Spain 2-1

Korea showed up wanting a win today. Despite a first strike from Spain (only their second goal of the tournament) Korea came back to win 2-1 and move on to the knockout round. Spain struck at minute 29 and would hold on through the half, but in the second, their opponents scored in the 53rd and the 78th to win. The goal of the match game was Korea’s in the 78th, a soaring ball by Kim Sooyun from an acute angle that the Spanish keeper had no chance of stopping. Korea moves on, Spain falls to last in Group E and exits the tournament.

Here’s an updated bracket, complete with group standings and the next round of matches.
