Morning Brew – Mo’Nique talks playing queer icon Ma Rainey in “Bessie”

Good morning! Happy Hump Day!

The Fashion Spot wonders if Jenna Lyons is to blame for J Crew’s decline in sales. Speaking of, Jenna made Out‘s Power List. Other queer women include Ellen (duh), Rachel Maddow, Tammy Baldwin, SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry, Laverne Cox, Jane Lynch, Sia, Annise Parker, Robin Roberts, Megan Smith, Megan Ellison, Ellen Page, and Brittney Griner.

Liz Feldman was interviewed by BU Today.

“To see a version of yourself on TV is incredibly validating. I look at TV as a mirror, and TV paves the way for what is acceptable in society. I think people were bored by the same old thing. I hope the moment is right to connect with audiences who haven’t felt represented before in what they watch.”

The lesbian couple who sued a cab for kicking them out were included in Hillary Clinton‘s new campaign video, and they didn’t even know they would be!

When CNN decides lesbians in tech are “gaining ground,” that’s nothing short of bad ass.

LGBT women face a lot of economic insecurity.

A lesbian couple tried to get married on a cruise but were denied because their destination, Bermuda, wouldn’t allow it.

Mo’Nique talked with Windy City Times about her role as Ma Rainey in Bessie.

Playing Ma was amazing, because I feel connected to that woman. She had such a big heart and she didn’t take any mess. If you wanted it, she tried to make sure you got it. She loved people and she wasn’t ashamed of who she was. People still have a problem with being gay in 2015. Isn’t that insane? But you’ve got to go back to the 1920s and 1930s and it was illegal and they could lock you up, and that woman was unafraid to be who she was made to be. So to be able to bring her to life was such an honor and to be able to play with a living legend, an icon, like Queen Latifah, was such an honor. She is Bessie Smith. When they said “action,” her performance-in my humble opinion-is her best performance to date. It’s going to blow you away.

Can’t wait! It’s coming next month to HBO.

Call the Midwife has upset a lot of viewers with its lesbian storyline…and not in the way you might think.

Bisexual comic Catriona Knox talks about coming out with GayStar News.
