Ruby Rose: “Part-time MTV VJ, Full-Time Lesbian”

It’s been a busy year for Ruby Rose. The out 22-year-old became an MTV Australia VJ and then a tabloid sensation. Much of the press focused more on her sexuality than her job, however, linking her to numerous women, including Jess Origliasso of The Veronicas and Australia’s Next Top Model‘s Samantha Downie. Through all the media hoopla, Rose remained a good sport, telling interviewers she got fan mail from young fans saying she made it easier for them to come out – which is probably a big reason why she’s just been named one of the “25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians of the Year” by Same Same. (Also recognized: American transplant Portia de Rossi.)

In the interview with Same Same, Ruby says:

People liked that I came out straight away and didn’t hide it at all. It sent the message that there is nothing to hide when it comes to sexuality. … I’ve been an MTV VJ for 11 months – I haven’t even been doing this for a year – and only in the last two months have I seen articles written about me that don’t include my sexuality. For a really long time I was reading “Ruby Rose – MTV Lesbian,” as though being a lesbian was my job! I felt like I should get business cards made up – “Ruby Rose – part-time MTV VJ, full time lesbian.”
Even at her “part-time job,” she’s doing pretty well. It was announced yesterday that Rose will also be getting her own show on MTV Australia. Fresh Cuts will be a 60-second music news show to begin early next year; perfect for the attention-deficit music fans down under. But, at the speed Rose is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they upped that to two minutes in no time.
