Join our LezBiBuy on December 6 to support Queer Women-Owned Establishments

While our lesbian and bisexual characters are dying on television, our local queer female-owned bars and shops are following suit. Over the last decade, we’ve lost bookstores, restaurants and other community spaces that have been so integral to us in the past. Most recently, The Lexington, San Francisco’s last-standing lesbian bar, announced it would be closing based on high rent and low turnout.

With November and December being the biggest spending months of the year, we decided that we wanted to do something to support these kinds of businesses, to show the power of our hard-earned dollars and take them to the places we can feel comfortable at in being ourselves and keeping the members of our community afloat. So on Saturday, December 6, we will be hitting up our nearby lesbian, bisexual and queer female-owned establishments and encouraging you to do the same. (We’re focusing on brick-and-mortar places this time around, but our annual holiday gift guide will feature many LGBT-owned internet vendors.)

Our writers live all around the country, and closer to the day we will give you updated information on where they will be headed and at what times so we can have some fun meet-ups in the process of buying a book, a coffee, a cocktail, a Christmas gift, a gift certificate or whatever else you can afford and find by you. This will include locations in Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, New Orleans, Portland, Oreg., Chicago and Dallas.

We know there is no way to create a list of every single les/bi owned place in the U.S. without missing a few (or several!), so this is where you come in: We want you to add to our list. Below is a short list of a few places in every state that we know of and are suggesting for your patronage on December 6. On that day, we’ll all be using the hashtag #LezBiBuy on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to share the things we are doing to help combat commercialism and support local.

Business owners, want to get involved and offer readers any special incentives the day of? Let us know!

We know there are so many more out there in the United States, so please help us with our growing list. Even if we don’t list one and you know it’s lesbian or bi-owned, we still want you to support that establishment on December 6.
