Top 10 Style Tips for Femmes

Tomboys can’t have all the fun. Here’s 10 simple yet marvelously effect pieces to spice up your autumn outfits.

1. Panama Hats Panama hats are awesome. Specifically, felt panama hats in dark neutrals such as rich chocolate browns, camels and blacks are all the rage amongst the young, chic, and unintimidated by statement headwear. Even on good hair days (aka days I bother showering), I find myself grasping my coffee panama hat on the way out the door. It adds a wonderfully unfussy finishing sheen to whatever I’m wearing, ands shows I’m unafraid of bold headwear. Don’t be tempted by embellishment or patterns-the charm of a timeless piece lies in simplicity, not excess. Instead, add light layers and hardware accessories for a result that says: tough but classy. Who doesn’t adore a gritty broad?

2. High-waisted skinny jeans

Chances are you’re already set on low rise denim. Our generation has been stocking up on bum-grazing waistlines since middle school. As much as I love visible hip bones (I really really love hip bones), there’s a rich world outside low cut that we should all be exploring. High-waisted skinny jeans, particularly in a super soft stretchy fabric, are immensely flattering to the female form. Low rise straightens your body; high rise accentuates curves. Every time I slip into mine, I can’t help taking a moment to admire my newly defined hourglass shape in the mirror.

3. Gauzy Crop Top Crop tops, crop tops-I love crop tops. I’m sorry. There’s only so much I can write about crop tops. CROP TOPS. Love them. Of all the crop tops, my current favorites are crop tops with a loose, symmetrical hemline. If you’re not cool with showing stomach (understandable), simply select a lighweight slouchy T long enough to lightly brush the tops of your pockets. Second place goes to the hard to find but oh-so-lustworthy tulip crop top. An irreverent, clever, or simply eye-catching graphic/phrase will add personality to your pet crop top. To quote Coco Chanel, “Kitty cat crop tops are classy and fabulous.”

4. Black lace bra

Visible bra straps are not your mother’s wardrobe malfunction. I’ve never understood the disdain and disgust some women have for visible bra straps. Isn’t it less modest not to wear a bra? Or am I expected to abstain from strappy shirts because you can’t bear the wanton reality of a boob holder.

There is one cardinal rule of letting your bra play peek a boo: Black on black, all the time. Seriously, there’s nothing less sensual than a sweat-stained beige bra. White bras tend to turn dirty beige when you’re not paying attention. Chic black lace in as flimsy a fabric as your chest density will allow, that’s the way to go. Repeat after me: “My boobs are channeling New York”-or “My tits are so NYC.” Your choice. 5. Leatherish leggings Who knew that the only place I like fake leather is cupping my bottom? Not me, until eight months ago when I snapped up my first pair at TopShop. High-waisted, half leatherish, half marvelous black stretchy stuff, all possibility. Faux leather leggings are Euro-chic and USA-comfort at a denim price point. Slap on a crop top and wedges to channel your inner bad girl Sandy a la Grease, or pair leather leggings with a draping tunic and booties for a relaxed and highly Instagrammable weekend ensemble.

6. Denim cut-offs A Southerner to the core, I’ve never encountered a pair of denim shorts I didn’t like. Putting that in writing makes me feel terribly American, but it’s true. No dress, skirt, or skort makes me feel quite as comfortable in my own skin as that perfect pair of Levis, cut high enough to smooth thigh but low enough to mask any lack of thigh gap. The edges should be cut, not cuffed, with just a few stray wisps of thread. Dark or light, the perfect pair of denim cut-offs are gently faded from freshly saturated hue for that love-worn weathered look. Never skin tight, but always skin skimming, they offer a myriad of pairing possibilities. For fall, I’m partial to black tights or navy knee socks under boots and my favorite knit sweater.

7. Slip dress Slip dresses are a delicious throw back to Gen Y ’90s grunge, a beta version of the manic pixie dream girl look. There is a fine line between slip and lingerie that you must straddle delicately. Lace or floral accents will tip the look towards “sexy negligee,” and I suggest you avoid them so passersby don’t think you’ve just escaped from a burning building. Pick a blended fabric with a subtle sheen that’s both washable and subtly sexy. Accessorizing is key in looking intentional, not accidental.

8. Short boots A solid investment for any season, boots that fall mid-calf or below will be your new biffles in the coming months. I recommend you start your short boot search by selecting one of these three chic and dykey styles: Studded booties (edgy fashion dykes), floral Docs (feminine “Winona Forever” modern waif), or leather moto boots (anyone and everyone in between). Nothing neon or pastel. That should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway.

9. Soft Cloth Moto Jacket Nothing beats the comfort, flexibility, and affordability of a hoodie. The structure, sharpness, and androgyny of a leather jacket. Moto jackets are a glorious testament to hybrid, an unexpected treasure you’ll wear to the brink of ruin. The white Monrow piece I’ve thoroughly beat up was a gift from a deliriously glamorous stylist, who has a whole shelf of them.

10. Accessory Array I can’t bear to pick just one fierce femme accessory, so here’s a short send up of my fall favorites. Opaque black tights, with or without a pattern, are key in successfully wearing slip dresses and denim cut-offs. An oversized metallic statement ring (see 10 Tomboy Tips) is so simple, yet so sexy. Party your arm away with a combination of gold cuffs and silver bangles, but first make sure the bracelets fit semi-snuggly. Nothing ruins a moment quite like a clanging wrist.
